Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments Helix is great, so many unanswered questions. However I found True Detective difficult to get into. Maybe I should give it another try.

message 52: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) Claire, Helix was a great surprise - I hadn't expected it to be so good. It will be interesting to see how they pull it all together.

E.S. Wesley (eswesley) | 22 comments David, I know you're right. Something about just putting a whole bunch of compelling characters in a house and letting the chips fall gets right to the heart of drama. I love that push/pull back and forth, and the fact that even the antagonistic characters (O'Brien, anyone?) have the kind of depth that a protagonist would.

Downton Abbey is a perfect example of creating characters that are all heroes in their own story.

message 54: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Gilley | 40 comments Sherlock, anyone? I'm working on series two on DVD right now. Did not need to become addicted to a show with three episodes per season, but it's worth being patient.

message 55: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) Lauren, I love Sherlock. I'm going to be watching the last episode of season three tonight. So sad there are only three episodes in the season, it just got started.

message 56: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Gilley | 40 comments @David - I tell myself it's better to have quality over quantity...but that doesn't help much. Such a great show.

message 57: by T.J. (new)

T.J. West (tsalcedo) I"m watching too many shows LOL.... From Downton Abbey, to Parenthood... Lots of goodies

message 58: by Valerie (new)

Valerie O'Brien | 28 comments Currently, I'm into The Following. I may check out Downton. I like drama and "soapy."

message 59: by James (new)

James Caterino (jimcaterino) | 37 comments Love "Revolution" and looking forward to the return of "The Walking Dead" next week. I been meaning to checkout "Downtown Abbey" because I loved "Dancing on the Edge" from the same creative team.

message 60: by Claire (new)

Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments The Blacklist is like crack! I love it. Still trying to decide if I like Almost Human. Bitten looks promising. And don't get me started on Intelligence. I started watching 'cos Josh Holloway... But it is good.
There have been a lot of new good ones this season. Oh, and one really good established one is Once Upon a Time. Although I think their spin-off, Wonderland, isn't as great.

message 61: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) Lauren, Yes it is hard to complain when the quality is so high, and each episode is more like a movie than an installment of a TV show. But it doesn't stop me from wishing there were more.

message 62: by Claire (new)

Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments Sherlock is great! And yes, like everyone else I wish there was more. The English really know how to do Sherlock Holmes! Jeremy Brett's portrayal was brilliant, so is Benedict Cumberbatch's. The American equivalent (and I use that term loosely because it really isn't comparable) is a poor attempt at a modernization.

message 63: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Gilley | 40 comments @Claire - I loved, loved Jeremy Brett's version and was hesitant to get into the new incarnation because I was afraid I'd be disappointed. Boy, was I wrong. Benedict and Martin are perfect. Yeah, can't bring myself to watch the American version. It's just not Holmes if it's not British.

message 64: by Claire (new)

Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments OMG, just caught up on Almost Human. The show is really picking up. I hope it's not too late in the season. Don't want to spoil anyone but I am getting really curious now. (view spoiler)

message 65: by Rick (new)

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 169 comments Sherlock is pretty awesome on PBS.

I look forward to Archer every week because it just cracks me up, It and Dads are the two shows that make me laugh

I'm looking forward to Hannibal coming back soon

The second season of Orphan Black should be incredible (soon)

And Dusk till Dawn on FX looks just great! (soon)

True Detective on HBO is pretty interesting

Game of Thrones is coming soon too (trailers look cool)

message 66: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) Rick, I'm dying to see the next season of Orphan Blank. Love that show. Ever since I saw season one, I've been harassing all my friends to see it, because they have no idea what they're missing.

message 67: by Rick (new)

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 169 comments I'm right there with you. Tatiana Maslany deserved every acting award ever offered for her performance in season 1. I mean, come on, she played nine different characters and made each of them different.

message 68: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) She was truly unbelievable. Each character was so distinct - I don't know how she did it.

message 69: by Rick (new)

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 169 comments David wrote: "She was truly unbelievable. Each character was so distinct - I don't know how she did it."

I read an article that said she had theme music for each one and she'd throw on headphones before a scene to get into that character

She was so good at it that it actually took me a while for it to sink in that these characters are all played by the same person.

message 71: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) Rick, that's pretty clever. Might be a good strategy for writing a multi POV novel. *makes a note*

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

We don't watch television someone gave us the DVD of Downtown watched it for five minutes and threw it away.

message 73: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) Lula, I envy you watching Fringe for the first time. I loved that show and miss it dearly. And if you like it now, it only gets better after season one.

message 74: by Brian (new)

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments @Lula I hate it when they end things on a cliffhanger and never finish out the story. Some of my favorite shows have turned out like that and have made me want to not watch that network ever again. It's a big reason I don't watch much tv when it's originally on. The 4400, Flash Forward, Heroes, Firefly, etc... Oh and Fringe really is fantastic.

I watched Serenity before I saw Firefly, its notorious bad airtime hit the UK hard and I never saw it on any channel until well after I'd bought the box set. There are three things I'd drink an amesia potion for to watch again for the first time:

Firefly and then Serenity
The movie Equilibrium, just loved it so much
And the first episode of Shingeki No Kyojin. That opening...

R. Jackson-Lawrence | 54 comments Check out The Shield. Starts off as a fairly generic gritty cop drama, and then something happens at the end of the first episode - oh man, you'll never look back. 7 seasons of epic greatness ahead

message 77: by AJ (new)

AJ Salem (aj_salem) | 28 comments Just finished the latest season of Sherlock. If you like funny I've been watching Brooklyn Nine Nine - it's pretty awesome. And I'm waiting for Continuum to come back. I've tried Top of the Lake but I gave up half way through - the amount of tension wasn't in sync with how slow the pace was. I don't mind slow moving plots as long as I'm still drawn in. I feel bad because I really love Elisabeth Moss.

I agree The Shield from beginning to end was one of the best cop shows to ever be on TV

I binge watched through Top of the Lake and I agree there was just something missing there. I wanted to find out what happened to the girl, but by the time I got there I was less than impressed.

But The Fall which was a BBC series that I watched on Netflix was insanely intense from start to finish. Gillian Anderson (Skully from X-Files) was great.

I actually enjoyed the Shield more than the Wire, just from a pacing standpoint and the fact that Michael Chiklis was just awesomely bad throughout, but The Wire was cool too.

message 82: by E.S. (new)

E.S. Wesley (eswesley) | 22 comments I've had a ton of people telling me to watch the Shield and The Wire. I guess I need to get on that. Is it available on Netflix or HBO Go or anything like that?

message 83: by Rick (new)

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 169 comments The Shield I think is on Netflix, and The Wire is definitely on HBO Go

message 84: by David (new)

David Thirteen (davidjthirteen) I absolutely loved The Wire. Truly shows how good TV can be. But ever since I watched it, I look at other police shows and think: "that's not realistic."

I'll have to check out the Shield.

The Shield isn't necessarily realistic, it's just incredible television and completely unmissable from the first episode. I was lucky enough to watch series 1 and 2 back to back over about three days.

You won't regret it

Walking dead is back :o

message 87: by Rick (new)

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 169 comments Banshee on Cinemax is Awesome! The show that just aired Friday was one of the best directed, best edited, and visually stunning shows i think I've ever seen on TV...and I've done TV production for over 25 years, so that's saying a lot. Banshee is hard to define because it's not a cop drama, it's not a family drama, it's just a combination of so many things that add up to just a great show. If you're not watching it you should be.

I've seen the first series and loved it, that scene where he destroys the MMA fighter's hand....

I was going to wait until I had a few together to watch. Is it worth starting now do you think, or waiting another couple of weeks?

Nothing wrong with that Claire, not every genre or style appeals to everyone. The world would be boring if we all liked everything the same. ;)

@R, I definitely think it's a good time to start. If you got episode 4 which aired 2 nights ago, it has a closing sequence which is absolutely epic viewing. Enjoy!

Alanoud Alajmi At the moment, I'm watching Agatha Christie's Poirot. I'm hooked! I guess I'm reliving my childhood since her books were the first literary books I read.

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 169 comments I just blasted through the entire 2nd season of House of Cards on Netflix! It was awesome! The political maneuvering, the backstabbing, and reverting else was done with such precision, layering, and great acting that it was impossible to look away.

The Walking Dead was sooooooo so good this week! But yes, Lizzie is off the reservation. And your beloved Carol is at least partially responsible! ;) (I love Carol too.)
