Does anybody know of any good fiction writing contests? I'm trying to think of ways to get my name out there, and people have told me that writing contests are a good way to do that. Since I'm low on money, I'd prefer ones that either don't charge more than $20 to enter, or don't have an entry fee at all. Got any suggestions?

You could try Nanowrimo.orghttp://nanowrimo.org/
They have a contest each year in November. Write a novel in a month and it's free.
That's not quite what I meant. I meant a contest where I could submit a story I've already written and have it judged against other stories and (hopefully) receive a prize.
I know you're in the States, so this may be of limited help, but over here in Britain a lot of the Writing Magazines have details of writing competitions and give you the guidelines and cost to enter. Do you have anything similar over there? I'm sure you must have, even if they aren't nationwide.
How about these?:Writer's Digest Contests: http://www.writersdigest.com/competit...
Narrative does one every season (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) and they offer great exposure: http://www.narrativemagazine.com/fall...
If you do a search for major writing contests you'll get lots more.
ABNA is a great annual one, and free. The odds aren't great, but hey, it's free. It'll be starting up in January.http://www.amazon.com/b?node=332264011
