I read this book at least 15 years ago. It is a historical fiction about a man with the last name of Blood, with a young girl that he bought traveling through Crawford Notch of the White Mountains of NH with one of and a two wheeled cart. This was long before any roads were built. I think he eventually settles in Jefferson, NH

That's it! I had loaned my book out many years ago and could never remember the name. I think more people back then were like this character.
