I'm really sorry I haven't written any letters for a while. I hope you didn't think I'd forgotten about you, or this assignment. Just so many things have happened in the past two weeks and I was so busy, and every time I tried to write something I couldn't figure out what to say or how to say it. But I have to tell someone or I'm going to go crazy and I thought you'd understand, so here goes. Two weeks ago, Johnny got jumped a block from our house. They beat him up pretty bad and took his cash. The worst part is that he knows those guys. They used to be Johnny's friends. I know them too. I told you that Johnny was dealing with a breakup, remember? What I didn't tell you was that Johnny is gay. And his ex-boyfriend is an asshole, and he was one of the guys who beat my brother. I'm really sorry that this is so sloppy but I'm so mad right now just thinking about it and my hand keeps shaking. And so obviously Johnny was pretty messed up and I couldn't think what to do so the next day I called his dad and had him arrange for Johnny to join him and Cora on their trip around Europe. He left five days ago and this is stupid but I already miss him. Mouse keeps asking me when Johnny's going to be back. My mom didn't even reply when I told her. I'm not sure she noticed that he'd left. If she did she sure as fuck doesn't care. I just really hate her sometimes. Or all the time.

She has a new boyfriend now. He told me his name is Seven, but obviously it's a nickname. Probably cause he's got only seven fingers total. I'm pretty sure the other three got cut off. I didn't ask.

I kept wanting to call you but I guess I just didn't because of all the same things that you're worried about. I feel like right now these letters are our secret. And maybe this doesn't make any sense but they feel really important right now, almost magic like you said, and I just don't want anything to ruin them.

Here's some good news: I got a pay raise at the auto shop. And I also found someone to watch Mouse while I'm at work. Normally Johnny does, but obviously he's gone for now. It's the mom of one of Mouse's classmates and she said she doesn't expect me to pay her. Which is pretty great because I really can't anyway.

So that's what my two weeks have been about since I wrote my last letter. How are you and has anything new happened? I'm really glad you did go to that party and that you actually liked it. Sometimes those things are awful. Have you talked to Camille since then?

P.S. You're right, though, because I'd never write all this down if Mrs. Somers was reading my letters. I give them to her sealed, and she's promised me that she'd never peek. I guess I believe her. I'm starting to think she's not so bad after all.
