I read this book 6-10 years ago.

The book started out with a boy on a train and ending up at a magical kingdom. There was a contest to become king and he entered it.

It is a YA book. From What I remember there were no elves in it. It might have been about a contest to select a heir instead of a king. The king had a illness and his son disappeared before. So he held the contest to look for a heir.
