I had not considered her at all until quite late in the book and actually did not like her as the murderer. I would have preferred a different story line. That one didn't really work for me.
It wasn't until Harry found that picture that it occurred to me at al. I think it became real the same time it did for Harry. It actually made more sense to me than any of the other scenarios.
I thought Meredith was self serving and if she really did regret killing Marjorie, she would have done better by Harry after she died. I think she killed herself because she knew he'd solve this mystery. She was a coward.

I can't remember when I realised that Meredith killed Harry's mum. Yes I agree Jonetta in that she only killed Harry because she knew he would solve the mystery.
I don't think I had a fully-formed suspicion of Meredith, but I did notice early on that she was wearing a shirt with sea shells (or some other garment) and that struck me as being odd when compared with the belt she picked for Harry to give to his mum as a child.I didn't like this plot line, either.
This whole book reminded me of an episode of Cold Case. In fact, there was an episode on last night (I'm watching re-runs) in which a woman kills her best friend on a cruise ship because the girl is going to run off and marry someone she just met and leave her friend alone.Consequently, it made sense to me that Meredith would be jealous and angry that Marjorie was going to marry Conklin and leave her behind.
I also figured it out at the same time as Harry once it became clear that it wasn't Mittle.
