He's one of my favorite authors, certainly! He's fantastic and so irreverent and funny. His vampire series is really hilarious and Lamb is surprisingly philosophical and deep for such an irreverent work. Give him a shot!

"9) Who prayed his father would die?
Hint: Blood is thicker than water.
Hint: His parents met a Christmas dance
Hint: A love so intense it becomes a chain around his neck"
I can't find anything that really suits all of these.
My strongest lead is that it would be a book by Sir Walter Scott since he coined the phrase "Blood is Thicker than Water" (or so I have been led to believe, maybe I should check that?). Unfortunately SWS is quite the prolific author and the synopsis (what's the plural for synopsis) don't always mention the parents or smaller events like a characters prayers.
I'd be interested to know of y'alls theories? I'm going to plug in a guess from The Lady of The Lake, but I can't confirm all of the clues above.
Beyond that... I'm toast :?
xD

Plural for synopsis: synopses :-)
I'm not sure, but to me, it almost sounds like a more modern work. Which part of the Lady of the Lake? If it's an Arthurian trope, he didn't wish for his father's death (Uther) and Uther and Ygraine did not meet at a Christmas dance (not in the 6th century anyway). (I'm a bit of an Arthurian freak, if it hasn't come out...my work in grad school was on Arthuriana/medieval lit. ;-) Or were you talking specifically about a book called The Lady of the Lake?)

Everything from here on (from me) will be a guess.
I've asked everyone who I think would know and gotten nowhere. Even tweeted and twitter was silent :(
s'all good... I just want to know ***stamps foot
xD

Google will even give you really bad Harry Potter fanfic! :-)
Did you all see the last hint for 9)?
Currently all hints (including the question)are:
9) Who prayed his father would die?
Hint: Blood is thicker than water.
Hint: His parents met at a Christmas dance
Hint: A love so intense it becomes a chain around his neck
Hint: When one child dies, the brother left behind means everything.
This is a classic book, not an obscure one. You would all recognize the name and author.
Don't give up on me! :)

I saw it...but was discouraged...I flitted back and forth the other day between Brother Karamazov and Catcher in the Rye, but neither work. So I'm stumped.

For the record... As much as I read, I read mostly what I call trash, trashy light weight romance - throw away reads. I don't like stress, I don't watch horror (I read some thrillers and mysteries, but if I'm reading and making sure my back is against the wall so no one can get me... well that's too heavy)
This quiz was hard for me. If D.H. Lawrence is wrong, then I probably will give up (I won't, but I'll want to). I've not read it, and I don't really know the author, but all the clues fit.
Every one of my answers, with the exception of the Notebook (I saw the movie), I had to google and google hard.
Oh, when I was little, I saw some of Dorian Gray too, but left when it got scary (Don't laugh, I was little)
Please tell me it's over... :(
Cause now I'm desperately waiting for Ceri to come online and release me from my misery.
xD

Please Ceri, put me out of my misery.
xD

Please ..."
I certainly hope it's Sons and Lovers, Daisy! It fits all the hints. :-) Crossing my fingers for you!

in fiction who met at a "Christmas dance"
Putting Christmas dance in between "", took out all the Christmas dance and pageant notices. Sons and Lovers was then the third item on the list.
Surely it's right? I checked it against all the clues... but I guess it could be William or William and Paul? I know that all the children in the story had issues with their dad, but I only found reference to Paul actually praying he would die. Some of the other clues refer to brothers and two lads as well... anyway, right or wrong - we'll know soon enough.
I've really enjoyed collaborating you both on this.
...Come on Ceri ;)
xD
Ooh, sorry, I went to bed. LOL Good job, Daisy.
I am learning so much about books I've never read before. Having looked up all the quotes and analyses of the book's themes and why the author wrote it, I'm very tempted to read Sons and Lovers now.

Glad you're all still happy! I will be working on the next one in due course, give you all a few days break so you can have a cuppa, or something! :)
Daisy, don't forget I will need a Winners Question from you, with a couple of hints.

Parinita, I thought that too, but then I realized it was more about the caretaker of the actors, and not the actual name of the house the actors lived in. At least one of us actually put that book down though! :-)

xD
Getting time for another quiz! But I think we should shake it up a bit.
I was wondering if one question a day leading up to Christmas would be a good idea. First one to the post, with the questions not as cryptic.
Let me know what you think. :)

I had this mad idea of tying it to partridge in a pear tree and then thought that might prove a long shot! LOL.
The Christmas Quiz Special has started!
Today I'm letting posts hit but if you think it's a good idea, I could close the thread after posting the clue and reopen it for answers four hours later. This gives it more chance to be seen and the answer worked on by more people.
What do you think?

Francine got today's clue! :)
So, suggestion is:
I post around 2pm GMT. Close the thread for a few hours. Open it for answers, but I won't respond until the next clue.
That way everyone gets time to work out their answer, post it, even if it's the same (you can all agree/disagree), first person to post the correct answer wins that day.

No, no, Sorry. I've had a terrible couple of days and it slipped my mind. Posting Day's clue now.
I've not read this book... but I have since read a lot of quotes by Christopher Moore and I think I'll be reading this authors works in the future. Hysterical!
