Laura, A big Yes; both book and film are fabulous. That's the thing about Irving books; each one which was made into a film has been done very, very successfully.

Has anyone read The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald? Would you guys recommend this?

Sorry, not me. I am not a big Fitzgerald fan so apart from The Great Gatsby, I have only read Tender Is the Night (which I actually liked better than The Great Gatsby).

Has anyone here read anything by A.S. Byatt?

I read Possession and The Virgin in the Garden. I liked Possession better but didn't really like either very much. However I know some people love Possession.

I've seen the film Possession and the story was very endearing. I think I might like the book.
Ragnarok seems interesting too.

It's even more georgeous in real life, Giorgia. You should look for a copy somewhere just so you can run your fingers over it!

Only The Matisse Stories

message 225: by Robin P (last edited Oct 23, 2014 08:42PM) (new)

Robin P Possession is one of my all-time favorite books. If you were an English major, you will probably think so too. If not, feel free to skip over the poetry which Byatt created as a convincing fraud and you can still enjoy the story. I have read most of her other works but none compared.

message 226: by Chrissie (last edited Oct 23, 2014 10:52PM) (new)

Chrissie Giorgia, I too have read The Children's Book. I really liked it. It covers both Victorian and Edwardian times through WW1. Very good historical fiction with in-depth character portrayal. I am putting a link here to my review which explains exactly how I felt about the book while I read it: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 227: by [deleted user] (new)

I really disliked Posession. I found it very dry. But I'm not a literary major and don't appreciate books that focus on technical style as opposed to good story and interesting characters. Most people like it though but I wanted to give another opinion!

message 228: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Heather, even after having enjoyed The Children's Book, I have decided not to read Possessions. Friends warned ME away from it. It might fit others though.

I've read that and Possession; liked the fist better than the second ...

message 230: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe I should give Byatt another go with The Children's Book then. After struggling through Possession, I vowed that I wouldn't try another book by Byatt. It also made me decide that I'm not going to finish a book I'm not enjoying!

message 231: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Heather, I think one's appreciation of The Children's Book will to a large extent depend on your love of historical details or not. There is no denying that The Children's Booke has lots of historical facts. I was warned away from Possessions NOT for it being dry but for the love themes, poetry, the two time frames and I don't stomach Victorian times well. Those who warned me against it liked the book themselves but guessed it would not fit ME.

message 232: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I've actually read Possession twice, and really liked it, much more than the movie which was a disappointment, I thought.

Last summer I also read that sequence of four novels about the same protagonist, Francesca I think is her name, The Virgin in the Garden, Still Life, Babel Tower, and A Whistling Woman. I liked the first two more than the last two, but I think I would recommend any and all of them, though perhaps not all at once in a summer long binge. There is such a thing as Francesca fatigue.

No, Shirley. Of course, if I did read and like Cumming's work, I would have told you he's terrible, then suggested you send the book to me so as to get it off your bookshelves, lol:)

Has anybody read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao? I'm thinking of joining a real life book group and this is the first read

message 244: by B the BookAddict (last edited Feb 13, 2015 10:05AM) (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments @Heather, I tried to read it but flailed around helplessly; just too hyper for me, from memory. My shelves: print was too small/tried but not for me. You might have better luck because you're younger than I and you will be able to fathom all that urban speak!

I haven't read it but a couple of my rl friends have and loved it. If the rl book club looks good, I would say give it a try. Even if you don't like the book, you will have something to say at the meeting!

message 247: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I will try get to it. Bette, you make me laugh! I might be younger but I'm not very urban. I hope I manage with the speech!

I've reviewed them all, Gemma, if you fancy a look.
