So I feel cheated if Locke just missed a hand sign. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I'm not sure what's up. Of course this could be the result of Locke fearing Jean will abandon him for Ezri.
So Locke finally gets his revenge on Salon Corbeau, and pisses off Stragos in the process. All according to plan. Except they still don't get a word with the alchemist.
And now it looks like time for a pirate battle.

So I was way off with what Utgar would do. He's got some kind of alchemy created orb to destroy the Orchid.
Ezri saves them all at the cost of her life. I figured she would die in this book or she'd come between the bastards. I was hoping I'd be wrong though. The series needs strong female characters like her and the captain.
Even if the captain lives, I can't see them staying on the Orchid now that Ezri is dead.

So as I expected they left the ship and set out on their own. Their plan mostly worked except two VERY LARGE flaws:
1) Only one antidote and a dead alchemist
2) The paintings they had been planning to steal are forgeries.
I like that Locke tricked Jean into drinking the antidote, but I don't like that there is no resolution on the poison for Locke.
I can't see how Mr. Lynch can kill Locke off. It's not like he has some big ensemble cast. He keeps killing off all the supporting characters.
I don't think Jean could work as the main character with a new group or whatever. I think it's the pair of them that compliment each other to make the story go. I'd say brains and brawn, except Jean is pretty smart too.
I'm really curious who Merrain works for. I'd guess the Bondmagi, except it seems like her actions are too short term for that. I think the Bondmagi will want to continue to torment Locke and Jean for a very long and not directly kill them anytime soon.
Hopefully there is more on this in the next book.

Horrible moment when they have to decide which one drinks the antidote - and kudos to Locke for pulling another con, this time on Jean, to save him.

Yeah, yeah. You and your ARC...

Now I'm really glad that I did wait to read this series. If I had to wait so many years for this solution, oh my.
But Lynch did one or two unexpectedly unclimatic solutions so far, so maybe there was no real poison after all and the alchemist just tried to ruse them into thinking that, cause he wanted to survive.
Loosing Ezri was really a bummer. Poor Jean. They were so happy together.

Yeah, the ending was rather underwhelming in that way. It certainly makes me glad book 3 is out tomorrow.
Of course I still haven't gotten my ship notice..
