Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Is there a series out there that you would like to read but think it is not worth the money?

I get the majority of my books through the library but I pay for many of them as well. I notice there are some series that I think are good but just not worth all the extra cash.

For example I like the Chicagoland Vampires series but I would refuse to buy it, I just do not think it is worth $11 or $12 bucks. Same with Shelly Laurenston funny stuff but again it is just about the money.

Sara | 860 comments I put off buying Chicagoland Vampires for the same reason. It seemed like $11 was a lot for an e-book but I caved this month and bought the first three books.

Bungluna | 32 comments Shelley Laurenston is totally worth it for me. Others I wait for the pb or get from the library.

Lauren (laurenjberman) $11 or $12 is expensive for Chicagoland Vampires. I listened to them on audio and got them from Audible using credits. For some reason, that made the price of the audio more palatable.

Don't you think that with the whole credit system it seems like things are free? I know that I am paying for the credits, but when I buy things with them it doesn't seem like money to me. I'm weird I know.

message 6: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) You're not weird at all, Darcy. That is exactly how I feel - as if I'm getting something for nothing even though I'm paying for it.

Of course, I'm far more willing to spend the $14.95 on the audio than the $12 on the Kindle version.

message 7: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I think it really depends on how much you love a series. I'm willing to spend that much on Chicagoland Vamps, Downside, Elemental Assassin, Iron Druid, Night Huntress or Immortals After Dark, but not on Dark Hunters or Black Dagger Brotherhood. I like the last 2 series a lot, but I don't think they are worth the money.

Carolyn F. Kristen Ashley's ebooks are rarely on sale, although I've just found that 2 were on sale at Amazon that I missed recently (damn!).

Alisa I think Chicagoland Vamps for me has been the deal breaker. It's expensive in every format. There are some series that may be high in ebook ie. Dark Hunters but you can find the used ones in thrift shops etc and even if you don't want to wait till you come across them you can get them used on Amazon for $3-4. You can't do that w/ Chicago Vamps because even the used ones are $6-7. I personally don't stick to one format for books. I bounce between audio, paperback & ebook and it all depends on how I can get it the cheapest.

Sarah (sarahjbailey) | 21 comments Theirs a lot of series that are expensive to buy but recently I'v noticed the price of ebooks going through roof.

Marcia (marciameara) | 161 comments God bless Kindle. I paid $7.59 for Biting Bad, and it was worth every penny. I have reached the point where my library shelves are groaning under the weight of a lifetime of collecting books. Now, I only order print when it's a series I'm passionate about, or I love the cover art so much I can't live without it. (Almost anything with a Chris McGrath cover will find its way to my bookshelves). The rest, I buy on Kindle. A few things I've bought both places, but then I'm a bit obsessive about my books. If I want it badly enough, I'll do without something else to get it. And nothing at all stands between me and my very favorites. I'd sell furniture in order to buy the latest Dresden Files hardback.

"My name is Marcia, and I'm a bookaholic." :) There's no doubt about it. I probably need an intervention, but the older I get, the more books I crave. I've realized that no matter how fast I read, I can't finish them all before I shuffle off this mortal coil. So I buy books. And I am going to buy the ones I want, no matter the cost. I'll eat beans & weenies for a week, if I need to. I'll dress in rags. Whatever it takes. I'm going to buy the books I love, and then ones I think I'll love. But I do pick and choose the format these days, based on space for storing print books (because, of course, I can never get rid of any of them) and whether or not I need to own the actual book, or just to read it.

Do you think there's help for me, and others like me? Or do we really want help? I'm thinking I'd rather just roll around in my addiction like a cat in catnip, myself. :)

Judith Post | 130 comments Marcia, I LOVE your post!! I love books AND cooking, though, so there's always the choice--a new favorite author or a cookbook. How sad is that? But I use your method for buying these days. I buy hardback and paperbacks of authors I'm addicted to. Kindle for authors I'm becoming addicted to or want to try.

Hi, Judith! Nice to be understood! You gotta have priorities, you know? And mine are books and plants. (You cook, I garden.) Take heart though. When you buy cookbooks, you are...tada!...buying BOOKS! So what if they inspire you in a different way than vampity guys and folks that go furry? It's still a book addiction, right?

I buy lots of non-fiction, in particular, gardening books. (Gotta learn all those Latin names!) I'm a birder, too, so there's Field Guides, and Hiking Guides. Oh, me. My bookshelves runneth over!

I really am trying to limit my print books right now, though. I don't want to have to build an addition to the house. Mostly, it's books with Chris McGrath art on the covers for the print ones: Toby Daye, Dresden Files, Leandros Brothers, Vampire Empire, Alloy of Law, Thieftaker, etc. I NEED to be able to take those books down and touch the covers! They make me feel good just seeing them there. (Now you no doubt have an image of a crazy old lady, standing in the dark library, stroking her books! Eeep.)

BTW, my best friend just bought the Biting Bad paperback from amazon for $4-something. It had gone down in price since she pre-ordered it. So, if you want it badly enough, you can get it. Or, just sell the sofa. :)

Judith Post | 130 comments Oooh, I'm a writer, and the image of a crazy, old lady stroking her books is just AWESOME!!! I'll have to use that somehow:) Probably won't have her stroking books, though... Anyway, I can relate to the book problem. I like gardening and birds, too, but mostly stick to magazines for those. One of the guys in my writing group is a retired naturalist with a LONG bird list, so when I can't identify something, I turn to him. It pays to have connections:)

I write, too, and I kind of liked that image, myself, but I have no intentions of using it. Feel free! :)

I have a fairly long Life List as well, but mostly for Florida birds. And certainly nothing like a naturalist would have, though I did once work for Florida Audubon. We should talk sometime.

Gotta go now. I think I hear a Chris McGrath cover calling me.............:)

Done some of that in my day, though not so often now. My parents traveled all over the country, planning every vacation around what birds they would see, and where. I haven't had that luxury, and these days, birding is farther down on my list, and reading farther up. I'd rather go to a book signing. See, I not only will spend money buying books, but I'll scrimp and save to go listen to the authors.

Now that I know how hard it is to write one, I'm even more addicted to everything to do with books. And I still say, if you love them, you'll find a way to have them, at any cost. Including a library card, if that's your best option. Just get 'em! Life's not nearly as good without 'em.

Judith Post | 130 comments I enjoy writer conferences, too. Love all the author panels, but haven't gone for a few years now.
