So, maybe this was explained in the text, but I missed this when I was reading, but can Addie knows the what ifs. That's her ability, but if she knows what could happen can she not change it somehow? If everyday is a thousand decisions, why can't she make the big one she's searching and then change all the little ones, especially considering how the novel turns out. I know she gets her memories erased, but supposing that didn't happen, why is this path so set in stone, considering how bad it is?

I know she explained that somewhere, she said something like the path will always go in the same place no matter what. I'm can't really remember though, good question!

I think she said that since there are too many people involved in any event, she alone might not be able to change something...

But I mean... The example I'm thinking is that if she chose to live with her mother but didn't let Duke get close to her... Or would that require yet another Search?

She could have done that but then she wouldn't have had the information to save Laila. Have you finished the book I don't want to say anything you haven't gotten to...

I have, and that's partially why I was wondering, but doesn't the information from the search give her the ability to save Laila.

I guess what I'm saying is, how does Addie operate outside of the paradox that knowing the future tends to change it?

She says that with the information she knows, if she makes changes she might save Laila but then it might be another girl who gets killed. That the only way she can guarantee that (view spoiler)[ Bobby is captured and no other girl is killed/hurt in their place (hide spoiler)] is to go through with the future that she knows assures this. Sure there are a million small changes she could make and they might keep Laila and her safe but then it would likely just be someone else in their place. She can't be okay with that either so she (view spoiler)[ makes the sacrifice and goes forward with the future where she can guarantee things come to an end. (hide spoiler)]
