Seriously, I picked re-reading this book along with Queen of Shadows because I feel that both books have strong female leads and maybe it would be the redeeming chance for the Vampire Academy series but I still DO NOT like it. I can't stand the bitchiness and I can't stand Rose... Aelin/Celeana is such a much better portrayal of a bad ass female lead. So...I am done with this series.. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-5: (view spoiler)[ Okay, so I really really like Rose! Shes so sassy and feisty and I love it! Dimitri seems cool too, and Lissa seems really sweet! Christian I'm not so sure about... This is going to drive me nuts! Christian seems nice, but different at the same time. I'm starting to like him kinda. Its cool how Lissa can bring back animals from the dead. But who put that fox in her room?! And Dimitri catching Rose doing the dirty, oh god how awkward! Loving this book so far, it moves fast so I'm not bored and theres always something interesting happening! I also love the world and story building. Different types of vampires, vampire guardians. Chapters 11-15: (view spoiler)[ This book is getting really interesting! Love love love Dimitri. Mason is so sweet to Rose too. But Lissa is losing her mind! I like how they added some real life stuff to this, such as self harm. After the rabbit, Lissa just kept getting worse and worse, using compulsion on everyone. I really want to know more about Ms. Karp, and what happened to her. AND I STILL WANT TO KNOW WHAT SHADOW KISSED IS. Theres not much action in this book, but its a page turner and interesting. We'll see what happens! I hope they can save Lissa. (hide spoiler)]

This books is a fair bit darker and more serious than I expected, I was sceptical at first because those covers though but I am really enjoying it!

I'm glad that Lissa has decided to stand up for Rose now, and I'm curious to find what's really going on with Mia, I feel like her behavior is completely unreasonable (not even just realistically, but as part of the story) if it's just simple jealousy. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Okay so Lissa has turned out to be way more interesting than I'd expected. Can't say I approve of what she's doing but I can definitely understand why she'd feel to need to take drastic action.

I figured out that the dead animals were probably an attempt to force Lissa to overuse her powers just barely 3 pages before Rose pointed it out, totally still counts!

I'm really glad that Rose was able to admit her mistake and apologise to Christian for the lying, I was gonna be really annoyed if we had to spend the rest of the book dealing with the fallout of this misunderstanding. (hide spoiler)]

I knew that at least one out of the seemingly nice characters (Andre, Natalie, and Mason) would turn out to be the culprit... And somehow I forgot that Viktor existed. I legit thought that Andre would turn out not to be dead and that he was the culprit somehow.

This felt like a pretty complete book, I enjoyed it but I'm not sure if I really want to continue with the series to be honest. (hide spoiler)]

Finished - Hmmm.....(view spoiler)[ I'm not sure this book lived up to the hype for me. There were a lot of things that bugged me about the book. Let's start with the title - Vampire Academy - yet these supernaturals are NEVER referred to as vampires. I got that the Moroi were vamps based on Lissa's need for Rose's blood at the very beginning of the book, but it took the author forever to explain that the Moroi were living vampires and the Strigoi were dead vamps, and I am still a little confused about why the halfbreeds are "guardians" when they don't seem to get ANY benefits from the arrangement. Then there is the whole reason why they are imprisoned in this school in the first place when it is obvious that Lissa is not any safer there than she was on the streets with Rose. Finally, add in Mia's stupid character and her psycho quest for revenge on someone that had nothing to do with wronging her in the first place. It bugs me that there is always a mean girl character that you are wondering how she got so popular in the first place when she's so terrible. It's a YA cliche.
Now there were a few things I liked about the book. I liked the mystery of trying to figure out who was leaving the dead animals and why. While I wondered why it never crossed Lissa's mind to try to heal her uncle in the first place, I didn't suspect him until the end. I also especially liked Mason and Christian's characters and wish we had more of them. The romance with Dmitri? - eh, I don't feel strongly either way about it.
All in all, I think this was slightly below average for me. It looks like the ratings for the books improve, so maybe it was just first book syndrome. (hide spoiler)]
