Has anyone read this yet? It's only $5.99 for Kindle and I'm thinking about it, but no one I know has read it yet so don't know if it's any good or not!

Melodie: I am enjoying The Cuckoo's Calling! I borrowed on library loan Kindle and am at 24% - I like it so far! I have no idea where it is going to end up but so far it is a private eye type detective story with interesting characters and an interesting case. A few of the UK references have gone over my head. I seem to recall that they "Americanized" the Harry Potter books with versions for US release, that hasn't happened here.
I just picked this one up from the library yesterday and I've read 75 pages. I agree with Ann...I'm really enjoying it! I think the UK references are kind of confusing and find myself reading a sentence more than once, but it doesn't detract from the story :)
Just caved and bought it for my Kindle (Thanks Melodie)...gotta finish the 3 I am reading now, but maybe by the end of the week. Ann, I look forward to your review!

I am a member of the English Mysteries Group here on G/R and have toyed with the idea of starting a topic there listing all the perplexing British-isms I run across when I'm reading that genre that I'm sure folks there could clarify. Many I can figure out in context, like car-park for parking lot and bed-sit for efficiency apartment, but there are some ("Bob's your uncle" -- what?!?!) that elude me. I'll let you know if I do.
Although, now you're making me think, I could probably do just as well with Google. But that wouldn't be half as much fun!

Haven't started it yet. $5.99 is a great price, though, if I didn't already have a copy I'd think seriously about buying it for my Kindle.
You probably know the backstory -- that it was getting all kinds of raves over in the UK, and that was before anyone knew it was J.K. Rowling! So I'm guessing it's good....
I went ahead and got it. I don't usually pay that much for e-books, but I paid the same for HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN, the new Penny book.
I read it and really enjoyed it! I guessed the ending early on, but loved the characters and the writing. I had read Rowling's previous post-Harry Potter novel, The Casual Vacancy and hated it, so I didn't have a pre-conceived bias going in to this one. Hope this becomes a series.
My wife read it and said, mysters was meh but characterization was first class. She recommended it to me because she thinks my writing is the other way round :). I've put it on my TBR.Peace, Seeley
Marcy: Good to see you! So you hated The Casual Vacancy. I have heard mixed reviews. I have it lined up on audio for someday. The Cuckoo's Calling grabbed me up right away, faster than TCV.
Thanks, Ann. I thought that The Casual Vacancy was depressing, with unlikeable characters and less than wonderful writing. I agree with Seeley's wife - okay mystery but excellent characters make The Cuckoo's Calling first rate!
