Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments how would.you have dealt with that? would.you have been repulsed? could you stay? would you wonder? how would you have felt? when you read it in outlander what was your reaction?

the other courtney | 162 comments Can't imagine. No. Yes. No. Guilty. Traumatized.

In that order. The killer with that whole scene was that he "volunteered" (for lack of a better word) in order to spare Claire. Submitting oneself knowingly to violence is one thing, sacrificing yourself is quite another.

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments I know! it was really strange. like sometimes I feel like he gave up part of his manhood for her but man I.wonder...did.part of him like it?

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments I didn't mean to offend anyone by simply asking a.question and stating my feelings on the subject.

Erica (butterflygirl1975) | 99 comments Oh, no. NO part of him liked it. He did it for Claire...to save her life. And I agree with Gertt...he learned to live with it and overcome.

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments did it always haunt him in the other books? does he ever fully recover? in DIA it still haunted him pretty strong.especially when.Alex came along.

the other courtney | 162 comments I don't think anyone ever fully recovers - you just learn not to let it define you. Like any trauma, it's still there with Jaime, just not so much on the surface, not quite so raw and immediate.

message 9: by Erica (new)

Erica (butterflygirl1975) | 99 comments Without giving anything away...it doesn't exactly haunt him but he is able to lend perspective to others in the same situation. That's all I will say.

message 13: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments I would definitely emphasize with him. I was raped when I was 16 - not sadistically but there were marks left behind from the struggle. Having dealt with my own situation where I (not blaming myself as a victim here) allowed myself to be in the situation and then when I felt could no longer struggle I gave up and let it happen, I can understand the circumstances. I wouldn't wonder - I'd know. I would support him through his healing process even though it would be devastating going through that process with him. When I read it in Outlander I felt raw and it brought up thoughts and feelings that I have not had in a very long time but at the same time it was a bit therapeutic for me to readdress those feelings.

message 14: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments thank you Diane for sharing that. ;) I am sorry you went through all of that.

message 15: by Erica (new)

Erica (butterflygirl1975) | 99 comments Diane, thank you for sharing with us. I never went through the experience but reading Outlander and that section was one of the times reading a book when I have cried the most.

message 16: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments It was a couple of lifetimes ago ;) and I am fine with sharing. I even shared my story with about 45 7th graders at my school when there were issues going on involving sexual harassment. I saw how my story not only opened their eyes to the very real possibilities it allowed a few to open up about their unfortunate experiences which helps in healing.

message 17: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments I am NOT talking about how Claire felt, but how would YOU feel. I know how Claire felt about it, I read the book.

message 18: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 549 comments Erica I just read where Claire gave herself to Louis to free Jamie. Wow! I am speechless

message 19: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I would cut off Jack's penis and shove it down it throat while sticking a knife up his butt, especially since it was Jamie and I'd give Jamie all the time and love he wanted, although I would never have thought of the healing scene that Claire did in France. Much smarter than I am. I would have just followed him everywhere he went.
