She doesn't trust people easily and isn't afraid to launch herself into a fight if she has to. She's a savage little tiger- with a very strong will. She is quite scared of most things though, and hates spiders too.

||⚔|| Historic Overview ||⚔||

[Early Life]
Cosette was born to Fantine in the slums of Paris. Unable to care for Euphraisie, Fantine gives Cosette up in the care of an abusive and dishonest family who survive by running a bar and pickpocketing their customers.

[Childhood]
Euphrasie, nicknamed Cosette (from "chosette", or "little thing") by her mother Fantine, is the illegitimate daughter of Fantine and Félix Tholomyès, a rich student. After Tholomyès abandons Fantine, she leaves Cosette with the Thénardiers at their inn in Montfermeil, paying them to care for her child while she goes to work in the city of Montreuil-sur-Mer when Cosette is two years old. Unbeknownst to Fantine, the Thénardiers severely abuse and mistreat Cosette while she is under their care for the next five years. They beat her, starve her, and force her to perform heavy labor in their inn. Under the Thénardiers' care, she is described as "thin and pale," wears rags for clothing, and she has chilblains on her hands as well as bruised and reddened skin. The narrator also states that "fear was spread all over her."

There are a hundred boys and girls,
Nobody shouts or talks too loud,
Not in my castle on a cloud.

There is a lady all in white,
Holds me and sings a lullaby,
She's nice to see and she's soft to touch,
She says "Cosette, I love you very much."

I know a place where no one's lost,
I know a place where no one cries,
Crying at all is not allowed,
Not in my castle on a cloud.

Oh help! I think I hear them now,
and I'm nowhere near finished sweeping and
scrubbing and polishing the floor.
Oh, it's her! It's Madame!"

[Personality] At LEAST five sentences.
Éponine is a very sweet little girl- that is, to most. Oftentimes she can be horrid to Cosette but she's an angel around her parents. It is not that she's mean to the core, she was just raised like that. She's kind and fun- loving and sticks with her Papa when he's around and not mad at her. She loves life at the inn.

Later on in life, Eponine falls in love with a good friend of hers, Marius Pontmercy. Upon realising he has feelings for Cosette, she spirals into sadness. Also, as she gets older and more independent, she realizes her parents' ways of crookery are despicable and wrong and so she turns against them, no longer loving them as she once did.

||⚔|| HIstoric Overview ||⚔||

[Early Life]
Éponine was born into the family of the Thénardiers, innkeepers at Montfermeuil. Her parents always spoiled her and her sister.
[Childhood]
As children, Éponine and her younger sister Azelma are described as pretty, well-dressed, and charming. They are pampered and spoiled by their parents, the Thénardiers, who run an inn in Montfermeil, France. In 1818, when Fantine and her illegitimate daughter Cosette come across the inn, Fantine sees Éponine and Azelma playing outside. Cosette joins the two sisters and the three play together. Fantine asks the Thénardiers to take care of Cosette while she goes to look for work in her home town. The Thénardiers abuse Cosette, dress her in rags and force her to work, while spoiling their daughters and letting them play. Following their parents' example, Éponine and Azelma are unkind to Cosette and treat her like a servant.
During the 1823 Christmas fair, Éponine and Azelma admire a big, beautiful and expensive doll in a shop window. That night, they play with their own doll, while ignoring Cosette. Their doll is "very much faded, and very old and broken". They then cast the doll aside to play with a kitten. Cosette, never having owned or played with a doll, quickly grabs it and attempts not to be noticed with it. After fifteen minutes, Éponine and Azelma discover that Cosette has taken their doll and tell their mother, who yells at Cosette. Jean Valjean, who has witnessed the scene, leaves the inn and buys the expensive doll. He returns a moment later and gives it to Cosette. For the first time, Éponine and Azelma "looked upon Cosette with envy".

[ON MY OWN]
On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own

Argot is the slang used by thieves, criminals, and others who live in the streets. Victor Hugo was one of the first to note the slang and write it down. He uses the character of Gavroche to introduce the concept of argot to the reader. Hugo devotes a lengthy chapter to importance of argot to the evolution of language in order to defend the extensive use he makes of it. Gavroche is "one of the most appealing and tender characters in fiction", who, despite his relatively small role in the novel, "brings a breath of happiness and humanity a love of life, wit, goodness, and courage in the face of adversity. His purity of spirit is strengthened rather than diminished by poverty, homelessness, and injustice." Where other characters are hardened by experience, Gavroche lives by his wits and shows kindness to everyone he encounters. In his view, as Javert embodies rigor and order, Gavroche represents the unruly, eccentric, and imaginative.

||⚔|| HIstoric Overview ||⚔||

Gavroche is the eldest son of M. and Mme Thénardier. He has two sisters, Éponine and Azelma, and two unnamed younger brothers. Hugo never provides his given name but says Gavroche has chosen his own name. His parents show him no affection and send him to live in the street, where he is better off than at home.

The Thénardiers sell (or lend) their two youngest sons to a woman named Magnon.

Due to a freak accident, the two boys are separated from Magnon without identification, and encounter Gavroche purely by chance. They are unaware of their identities, but Gavroche invites them to live with him and takes care of them. They reside in the hollow cavity of a giant elephant statue, the Elephant of the Bastille conceived by Napoleon as a fountain, but abandoned unfinished. This was no imaginary construction; located at the Place de la Bastille, it had been designed by Jean-Antoine Alavoine. The two boys soon leave him the next morning. They are last seen at the Luxembourg Gardens retrieving and eating discarded bread from a fountain. It is unknown what has happened to the two after that.

At dawn, Gavroche helps his father, Patron-Minette and Brujon escape from prison due to the request of Montparnasse.

During the student uprising of June 5–6, 1832, Gavroche joins the revolutionaries at the barricade. After an exchange of gunfire with the National Guards, Gavroche overhears Enjolras remark that they are running out of cartridges. He decides he can help. He goes through an opening in the barricade and collects the cartridges from the dead bodies of the National Guard. (view spoiler)

Enjolras is charming, fiercely passionate, and a classic example of a dedicated revolutionary. He speaks his mind without a care as to the shock or offense his words might bring, but this is out of a perceived kindness on his part, not a particular vindictiveness. He is a captivating orator, able to speak his thoughts and beliefs clearly and at great length. He is fearless and loyal to his country, claiming France to be both his mother and mistress. Love is equal to patriotism for him; he isn't swayed by romance or beauty as other men. A leader, he cares for his friends, but not as others would describe or expect. Violence isn't a part of his nature, nor does he care for it, but he will do what he has to for the advance of his cause.

description{[histoire]}

The illegitimate child of country aristocrat Archard Fremont Bon Lindet and his maid mistress Jeanette Aude, Enjolras' first years were rather happy. He was ignorant of his disgraceful status or the problems he would face later on in life because of it. All he knew was that his parent were in love, and while his father wasn't around as often, he still showed his love to his son in the time that he had.

And then his mother died and his father married a woman from a good family and who couldn't know of Enjolras' nor his mother's existence. His father told him that this was the way things were, that social standing conquered all . . . right before he sent the seven year old to a rather luxurious boarding school in Paris. This was the beginning of Enjolras' hatred of the chains people lived under in France's current state. And while his father still took the time away from his new family to visit him, things were never the same. As Enjolras grew older, he began to speak against his father's decision, their worldviews drifting further and further apart.

With such a tumultuous childhood, it shouldn't have been a surprise that young Enjolras cut financial ties to his father and set off on his own as soon as he graduated from school. He then completely immersed himself in the political turmoil, gathering a group of similarly-minded young men as his friends and companions who meet regularly at the Cafe Musain. His devotion to the liberty of France just as quickly cemented his status as the leader of these Les Amis de l'ABC. And as one of the prominent leaders in the rebel movements, Enjolras is out working to gather others to his cause. Unafraid of repercussions and single-minded, he easily garners support with his inspiring speeches and constant challenge to the people to rise up and fight for their liberty.

His father writes to him constantly, but Enjolras' heart has been hardened to him, both in the immovable, dark-aged views his father believes in and the reality that he was abandoned for a "good standing". He is aware he has a half-sister, but has no desire to meet her.

Grantaire is a man who takes good care to believe in nothing. However, he believes in Enjolras, he worships him and even calls him a "fine marble". He loves his friends, he doesn't show it like normal people do, but he does love them. If you ever need to find him, you can probably find him at the local bar.

||♔|| Historic Overview ||♚||

[Early Life] He was born in Aires, France and had rich parents. He never really got on with his parents because Grantaire constantly went out and got drunk almost every night, despite his parents' protests.
Grantaire had very little interest in the cause that the Les Amis were fighting for. He's a drunk, cynical artist who is described as "frightfully ugly" and a renowned dancer and boxer. Grantaire is seen often as the joker and drunk of the group of students, as seen when Marius first admits his love for Cosette. He admires and reveres Enjolras often describing him as "a fine statue!" Grantaire was mesmerised by Gavroche, acting as an older brother to him. Grantaire was treated disrespectfully by Enjolras, causing him to fall into a constant state of drunkenness - eventually leading to Grantaire passing out for the majority of the June Rebellion until he awakens to find Enjolras about to be executed by the National Guard. Grantaire dies alongside him, whilst finally announcing his support for the Republic.

"Jean Prouvaire, was a shade more soft-hearted than Combeferre. He called himself Jehan, with the touch of fantasy that characterized the profound and widespread impulse of that time, which has given rise to our most necessary study of the middle ages. Jean Prouvaire was a lover; he cherished a pot of flowers, played the flute, wrote verses, loved the people, pitied women, wept over the lot of children, divided his faith equally between the future and God, and reproached the Revolution for having cut off an illustrious head- that of Andre Chenier. His voice, which was ordinarily soft, would suddenly become masterful. He was widely read to the point of erudition and near to being an orientalist. Abpve all he was kind; and (a matter easily understandable by those who know how closely kindness is akin to greatness,) in poetry he favored the grandiose. He knew Italian, Latin, greek, and Hebrew, but the four languages served him for the reading of only four poets, Dante, Juvenal, Aeschylus, and Isaiah. In French he preferred Corneille to Racine and Agrippa d'Aubigne to Cornielle. He loved to stroll through meadows of wild flowers and was scarcely less interested in the passage of clouds than the passage of events. There were two sides to his mind- the side of men and the side of God; he studied, or he meditated. During the day he pored over social questions- wages, capital, credit, marriage, religion, freedom of thought, freedom to love, education, the penal system, poverty, the right of free association, property, production and distribution, the riddle of the lowest stratum which spreads its shadow over the human ant-heap;at night he contemplated the immensity of the heavens. Like Enjolras, he was rich and an only son,. He talked gently, bowed his head, smiled self-consciously, blushed for no reason, was awkward and extremely shy- and, for the rest, fearless."

Childhood: Jehan was a quiet child, spending most of his time in a "cave" he pruned out in the middle of a rosebush in his backyard. Here he read and dreamed of past days and, occasionally, days to come. He had few friends, but fewer enemies. His mother and father were, unlike their friends, proud of their son, his intelligence, and the way he saw the world. He was able to skip years in school, which always left him as the youngest in his class. One day his father sailed on business to Sweden- and never came back. His ship sunk off the coast of England.

Adolescence: His beloved father's death shook Jehan, but only his mother noticed. To the rest of the world he was still the same, silent child. After a few years, his mother married a childhood friend, who treated Jehan as a father would. Jehan has great respect and admiration for his step-father, and perhaps it was his passion- his memories of a cause gone by- that set Jehan on his course. Meanwhile, his mother had three more children. By this time he began attending school in Paris, and met two friends who would stick with him for life, but as of yet did not know each other: Enjolras Lindet and Marius Pontmercy

Adulthood These men were his friends for vastly different reasons. Enjolras had an irresistible pull about him, and spoke like his step-father. He included Jehan in meetings, and soon the quiet, awkward giant found his voice. Marius, on the other hand, was a fellow dreamer- a man who also found power in thought. Jehan knew Marius before he knew Enjolras, and the two often spent days in the country, dreaming, planning, and talking of the glory of past battles.

Marius is an idealistic dreamer, full of quiet passion and good intentions . . . though he tends to spread himself among many different things at once. For he both wants a free France and throws himself eagerly into the cause, but he also wishes for a happy life full of love without the worries of war or loss. This division causes him to appear less of a patriot, but he still cares very deeply for the state of his country. But as he was not always a member of the revolution, he is still viewed with varying degrees of doubt by his fellow compatriots. Still, he is one of the more prominent figures in the Les Amis de l'ABC due to his rather extensive knowledge of the past revolution after he researched his past father's part in the failed uprising.

But despite it all, there is no denying that Marius is a hopeless romantic. He longs for the day when he will find the special lady who matches his soul. He is often found dreaming about one thing or another, usually having to be called once or twice in order to be stirred from his mental wanderings. He reads poetry with the same fervor that he gives to that of the revolutionary cause. Yet Marius takes everything with a grain of salt, shrugging off the various teasing remarks of his companions that he so easily garners. Smiles come often to his features, and he always has a good word or two for his friends. While not as grand or eloquent an orator as Enjolras, Marius has a way with words due to his education.

Raised by his rich paternal grandfather until he was sixteen, Marius grew up believing his cast-out father to have abandoned him following the death of his mother. But on learning that his father was, in fact, a decorated war veteran of Napoleon's army, this led Marius away from his loyalist views as taught by his grandfather. As his political views grew further from those of his grandfather and extended family, tensions grew as well. After a fierce argument with his grandfather, Marius then spurned his inheritance and family, moving out to fend for himself. He refused any and all money from his relatives and threw himself wholeheartedly into the revolutionary movement.

He was first introduced to the Les Amis de l'ABC by a fellow student and friend, Courfeyrac, with whom he also boarded for a while following his departure from his family. At first, his views clashed with those of the group, but he eventually came to accept and stand for a republic as opposed to his previous Bonapartist ideology. Now impoverished, Marius still managed to complete his schooling and became a lawyer, as well as learning German and English. He currently resides at the Gorbeau tenements.

Gaspard is one of those charming rogues who annoys and endears himself to people at the same time. Animated and easy to laugh, he has no lack of attention and revels in it. He maintains a fine balance between being cheeky and sincere, and has a long list of both lovers and enemies. A flashy dresser to the best of his meager allowance, he prides himself on his appearance; he knows his appeal and uses it most deftly to his advantage. But despite his flippancy and flirtatious nature, you will not find a more loyal or helpful friend. He loves deeply and hates passionately - there is rarely a middle ground.

The son of a prostitute who was better off than most in her position, Gaspard was originally from the streets. But due the kind attention of a local priest who took the young boy under his wing and care for him as his own son, he grew up well-nourished and mostly innocent of the harsh realities of the street life. His mother would visit from time to time, but he never held much love for her as she was prone to remind him - however not unkindly - that he was an unexpected arrival and she was grateful that he was not under her care. He knew this was her kind of love, and mourned her passing from a summer fever when he was twelve, but he was truly devastated by the death of the priest from the same fever a year later.

Gaspard made his own living on the streets as a pickpocket for a few years until he decided to clean up his act and attempt the scholarly life. He managed to scrape some decent grades up for a year or so before he dropped out, more of a in-the-moment personality than one searching for a trade. He was able to make a good enough living from his various connections on the streets, from petty thievery to errands and temporary jobs in shops or as a dock worker. But despite his lower-class situation, he maintained a firm friendship with his school friends, visiting them often at the Cafe Musain.

As talk of revolution grew louder and more prominent, Gaspard became a fierce advocate of the cause. With his past and current life on the streets, he was one of the most affected by the current state of affairs. He has a ragged gathering of street rats and young men like himself who are more than willing to fight for a better life, and often speaks of how he will be one of the first to stand on the barricades.

Shy and slightly awkward, Percy is a gentle sort of fellow who prefers books to socializing. A sideline member of the revolution, his political interests are the loudest part of his personality and are one of the few subjects that will draw him from the corners he usually stays. Well-learned due to his prolific appetite for any kind of thoughtful and intriguing reading material, he is more than capable of holding his own in discussions centered around topics from history and ancient philosophies to theological and scientific theories. But even at his most animated, he is still quiet, speaking in low tones with minimal gestures . . . though one can easily detect his passion by the bright spark in his eyes.

Percy was born on the outskirts of Paris to a middle-class merchant family. A quiet and eccentric child since birth, he preferred the cool silence of the local church library as opposed to the rest of the children his age who were generally found outside. He was expected to take up his father's trade when he came of age, but being of a scholarly mindset, young Percy finally mustered the courage to request of his family that he be sent to school to learn a trade more suited to his personality than that of a merchant. For he knew that the frequent visits both afar to trade and into markets to sell were not his cup of tea; the few times he had accompanied his father, he barely managed to look people in the eye and loathed the idea of haggling and arguing for the best deals.

And so he was sent to school in Paris and quickly discovered a knack for numbers, thus focusing his studies on becoming an accountant. With this trade he felt that he could help his father - albeit not in the way originally intended - and their family business. But facing the realities of the further demise of life in France, Percy also slowly became a part of the republican revolution. He was a reluctant advocate in the use of force instead of negotiations to bring change, and he is sporadically active in the movement, but is a revolutionary all the same. He still believes there could perhaps be found a better way to solve their problems but, in the silent, unspoken parts of his heart, he knows that one day he will be faced with the choice to either pick up arms for France or stand by and deemed a coward for his peaceable beliefs.

Alain is a quaint kind of fellow with a joke at the ready for all situations. He is rarely still, always in some motion or another, even when he is sitting his fingers will be tapping or his foot bouncing to some tune heard only in his own head. He is easy to converse with on a wide variety of subjects, though his most frequent and passionate topic is that of a better France. From a republic-minded family, he has grown up hearing of the injustices upon the country and the men who tried to fix them; he has always dreamed of being one of those men in his own time. Never having wanted for any true necessity or money, his higher status has not ruined his good intentions, and it comes as more of a surprise to learn of his background and family. Alain prefers the company of the lower classes to that of the rich, as the latter are always about one petty thing or another as opposed to the usually brutal honesty of the poor.

As the only son of a moderately wealthy family from old blood . . . but one who fled France during the first revolution due to their outspoken support of it, Alain has grown up waiting for the day that he could follow in his father's footsteps. While his family, now more cautious of their views with the future of their children to be mindful of, is not as outspoken as they once were, Alain more than makes up for it with his dedication to the cause.

However, Alain is also a very free-spirited kind of soul, which means he both enjoys a good time and is determined to fight for the liberation of France. His partying habits are a close mirror to those of Grantaire - a close friend of his - but he shows more concern for the revolution than that of his friend. He is a regular advocate of the cause out on the streets and in crowds, able to speak to the people with an empathy garnered from his time spent out on the streets and living in the city rather than with his family outside Paris in their modest family estate.

[Personality]

Vaiva is friendly and open to most people when she first meets them, despite having an air of snobbery around her. And indeed, she does occasionally love indulging in stereotypical 'rich girl activities', such as embroidery, tea parties, and balls. She's also a very fast talker and thus people have a hard time understanding her; she also is hyperactive and likes jumping around and bouncing as she talks. She's also quick to judge and impulsive before learning the full story-and the fact she keeps a concealed pistol on her at all times and knows how to shoot it isn't helping matters.

||♔|| Historic Overview ||♚||

[Early Life] Vaiva was born to a rather spontaneous set of parents; a Lithuanian soldier and a French lady, whom he met while traveling. The two fell in love and moved to his native Lithuania, having a daughter. Vaiva's mother insisted on a French middle-name, so she got one.

Vaiva's very early years were spent in Vilnius, on her father's manor, but she doesn't have any memories of this. When she was five, her parents moved back to Paris, her father being made to move there on order of the Russians. She grew up in a little luxury, though not much.

[Childhood]

Vaiva's father often told her stories of his homeland, inviting a rebellious steak into her. It seemed like so much more fun than Paris! He even raised her like a son; letting her ride horses and even teaching her how to shoot a pistol properly, which she started carrying in her boot since she was ten to protect herself.

However, despite her happiness, as she grew older, she knew not all was well with the world. She would always become incredibly sad whenever she saw a really poor family on the streets, or overheard the kitchen servants trying to pinch their own pennies to save for only the really essential things.

[Adolescence]

Once Vaiva turned sixteen, she grew frustrated by how seemingly little France as a whole had changed in concerns for the poor. She knew this would not stand in her father's Lithuania, and needed to do something about it. But what could a slightly well-bred girl such as herself even do about it, she wondered.

She snuck out after dark for three years, helping as many people as she could find, and also trying to find information on a possible group of like-minded people, and she soon found one when she was just shy of eighteen. Nervous they would turn her away due to her foreign background or wealth, she dresses in home-spun clothes and hides her faint accent, and is now ready to fight in the inevitable revolution, and has even taken some of the younger members under her wing.

[Family]

{Mother}

Lady Lucille Malis, nee Beamount, 35

{Father}

Colonel Mikhals Malis, 39

{Siblings}

None biologically, but considers the younger members of the ABC to be her siblings.

[Friends]

[Enemies]

Anyone who abuses poor people

[Other]

Due to being French-Lithuanian, she can speak both languages fluently, but her Lithuanian has a slight accent. She also knows a tiny bit of Russian, mostly swears from her father.

[Fears/Phobias] not being able to save his friends, his life being meaningless

[Dislikes] arguing, the crown, pointless waste

[Personality] Combeferre is the peacekeeper and philosopher of the band of rebels. He still loves cracking jokes and poking fun at the others, but he'll also be the first one to step in and break up a fight. He's basically the older brother of everyone and has everyone's back. He's a bit wiser and calmer than the others, even though Enjorlas is older than him. He firmly believes in the Revolution but also knows that enjoying all life has to offer is important as well.

||♔|| Historic Overview ||♚||

[Early Life] Combeferre was born to a doctor named Paul Combeferre and his wife Jeanette Combeferre. Combeferre was the eldest of four children.
[Childhood] Combeferre, as the eldest child by three years, was much mellower than his siblings, preferring books over guns and toys. He was especially close to his father, who brought him home a new book everyday and would tell the young boy about how he treated different illnesses that day. However, as Combeferre reached 10, his family began slipping into poverty as less clients could afford a doctor. Monsiuer Combeferre treated the sick, even if they couldn't pay, but this only worsened his family's financial problems since he couldn't afford to buy new supplies. Finally, when Combeferre was 13, he was sent off to work as an assistant for a merchant in Paris, a friend of his father's. His three brothers were sent to work in the mines and his sister and mother worked as laundry maids. Combeferre never saw his family again but kept in touch by letters.
[Adolescence] Combeferre worked hard in Paris for 5 years. When he reached 18, his boss surprised him by giving him enough money to pay for tuition at a local Medical school. He attended college for 2 years. There, he became friends with Enjorlas Bon Lindet.
[Adulthood] Combeferre noticed how no doctors saw to the needs of the less fortunate, even though they needed the most help. Remembering his father, Combeferre began treating them himself. However, he often lost many patients since most were already too ill to be saved. He decided that if it wasn't for the upper classes, the people wouldn't have been so ill in the first place. He decided to join the Revolution and Enjorlas's cause at 21.

Benoît is a quiet man, but when he speaks it is well worth listening to. He thinks and loves deeply, and tortures his own conscience with his long memory. He is always kind to the unfortunate, but when his anger is aroused it is the most chilling and terrifying of flames, burning alone in him, for he has admirable self-control. He tries to fight by heaping coals of fire, but when his anger is fully unsheathed it is with reason, and wielded with valour. His brilliant mind fevers his whole being. He loves, and hurts, and crushes himself for others - but he is afraid to face his own monsters, fearful of his own dark. Most see only his outward garb of worn serenity, but the depths of his soul, heart, and mind are anything but.

Benoît was born in a cottage, in the midst of a field of poppies and sheep in France's south. These were his happy years- the years he loved and lived and felt nothing else. His father and mother loved him and each other, and there was the great sky for contemplating. Their whole family worked hard, both in the fields aand at home, but bread and milk seasoned with exhaustion and kindness is better than king's fare.

Then came the break. The landlord, a violent, unkind man, wanted his Papa to work on a holy day. Benoît's father refused. It turned into a feud that involved all the laborers, some going on strike and being violently punished, some working anyway- including Benoît’s father. One day several workers were beaten to death, and Colombe was among them. That was all. The Raussell family was evicted.

The next few years of wandering were terrible- both Benoît and his mother were abused in ways he refuses to remember before they finally found refuge in a Paris chapel. There was a need for a respectable widow to fill the space of seamstress- and even a haggard Raussell could be respectable when the time called. Benoît learned from the priest and eventually entered theology school.

Here Benoît looked for work, and a friend told him there was an opening- if he knew how to keep his mouth shut. That was one of his skills indeed. Benoît became editor for the SDH student paper- and got sucked into revolution.

In this conclave of young heads, (les Amis de l’ABC) there was one bald member.

The Marquis d’Avaray, whom Louis XVIII. made a duke for having assisted him to enter a hackney-coach on the day when he emigrated, was wont to relate, that in 1814, on his return to France, as the King was disembarking at Calais, a man handed him a petition.

“What is your request?” said the King.

“Sire, a post-office.”

“What is your name?”

“L’Aigle.”

The King frowned, glanced at the signature of the petition and beheld the name written thus: LESGLE. This non-Bonaparte orthography touched the King and he began to smile. “Sire,” resumed the man with the petition, “I had for ancestor a keeper of the hounds surnamed Lesgueules. This surname furnished my name. I am called Lesgueules, by contraction Lesgle, and by corruption l’Aigle.” This caused the King to smile broadly. Later on he gave the man the posting office of Meaux, either intentionally or accidentally.

The bald member of the group was the son of this Lesgle, or Légle, and he signed himself, Légle [de Meaux]. As an abbreviation, his companions called him Bossuet.

Bossuet was a gay but unlucky fellow. His specialty was not to succeed in anything. As an offset, he laughed at everything. At five and twenty he was bald. His father had ended by owning a house and a field; but he, the son, had made haste to lose that house and field in a bad speculation. He had nothing left. He possessed knowledge and wit, but all he did miscarried. Everything failed him and everybody deceived him; what he was building tumbled down on top of him. If he were splitting wood, he cut off a finger. If he had a mistress, he speedily discovered that he had a friend also. Some misfortune happened to him every moment, hence his joviality. He said: “I live under falling tiles.” He was not easily astonished, because, for him, an accident was what he had foreseen, he took his bad luck serenely, and smiled at the teasing of fate, like a person who is listening to pleasantries. He was poor, but his fund of good humor was inexhaustible. He soon reached his last sou, never his last burst of laughter. When adversity entered his doors, he saluted this old acquaintance cordially, he tapped all catastrophes on the stomach; he was familiar with fatality to the point of calling it by its nickname: “Good day, Guignon,” he said to it.

These persecutions of fate had rendered him inventive. He was full of resources. He had no money, but he found means, when it seemed good to him, to indulge in “unbridled extravagance.”

Bossuet was slowly directing his steps towards the profession of a lawyer; he was pursuing his law studies after the manner of Bahorel. Bossuet had not much domicile, sometimes none at all. He lodged now with one, now with another, most often with Joly.

Deniel is short but muscular, generally in some state of controlled grubbiness. His face is usually plastered with a sloppy grin, and his eyes always have a sparkle.

P E R S O N N A L I T É

Deniel is brusque but oddly poetic, a boy with his own style of art and strange way of patching words together. He takes after Bahorel with his ability to get into a fight - there is fire in his veins, and oft it pours out to fast. He is smart enough but doesn't always call upon it, handsome enough but doesn't truly care, could make something of himself but instead choses the free life of courier and painter of fury.

Deniel's family was rich enough, tailors in a world high on fashion. But when his father made the wrong type of connections, he ended up in prison- it was a petty charge, a short stay, but it changed him. He came out with dreams - not for rebuilding his business, but for anarchy, and a heist on one of the richest noblemen in the city.

It didn't turn out so well.

Deniel, his mother, and his brother still live in relative comfort- she sells fabric, Deniel runs, Eadgard sews. but much to his mother's chagrin, Deniel's father planted ideas in him; ideas he may not take to his extremes, but still strong enough that he expresses them in the scarlet graffiti along certain delivery routes.

There is a revolution coming.

Christophe is not one who would be assumed part of the revolution. He is hesitant and soft-spoken, uneasy with conversations and people in general. His solitary upbringing has perhaps been the cause of this trait, but despite his great awkwardness he has a passion for justice. It is this which has driven him to the Les Amis and given him some semblance of courage. And yet while he appears as frail and cowardly, his fortitude of mind is surprisingly resilient.

description{[histoire]}

The only child of a moderately well-off tailor and his seamstress wife, Christophe's childhood was relatively quiet. It was only when he went to college and began to see the world beyond the confines of his home did he see how much injustice there was. He heard one of Enjolras' speeches on day, and after inquiring after the young men behind the movement, he was quickly accepted into their ranks. He was one of the lesser Amis, but his heart is true to the cause and, despite his fears, he intends to join them upon the barricades of freedom.
