This is the ISBN, from the dustjacket & copyright page of the first US printing, 978-0-06-171513-6. The copyright page also says "(trade ed.)" after the ISBN. Does not list an ISBN10 anywhere.
On the general topic, "can an ISBN refer to hardcover & paperback", the answer is 'yes'. Whether it should do is another matter but it certainly can and does. I own a paperback that has the same ISBN as the hardback. The pages are identical, the publisher just rebound them so they have the same numbers on.
Goodreads listing: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/62...
Goodreads listing says it's paperback & 448 pages The copy I'm holding is hardcover & 432 pages
Here's the amazon.com listing for the book I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061... It agrees with what my hardcover says.
Is it okay to change it from paperback and to change the page number? I'm uncomfortable changing that without inquiring further.
p.s. I don't see that a paperback is available. On amazon.com at least.
