Paul Zunckel Hi all, I am new to your group, and a South African Author. My genre is Horror/Thriller with a bit of suspense thrown in for good measure. At the moment I have my work on Amazon and Smashword, and of course Goodreads and have been asked to write a screenplay on my first novel, "Blood Moon Over Africa" so am now busy learning how to write a script.
The link to my free e-book is www.smashwords.com/books/view/488185.
I started out thinking that my story would end up as a three page in a magazine and it ended up into a Trilogy.
Anyway that is me, and Thank you for allowing me to join.
Regards
Paul

Ian Carr | 3 comments Hi all, I am admittedly not South African, but lived there for five years and have just had my first book published which is set during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. I love books (non-fiction and fiction) about South Africa and hope to find some new reads here!

Paul Zunckel Well guys, the silly season is upon us so I wish you all the best. I am a bit quite here as I am once again buried in writing my fifth novel, this time the setting is very local, South Africa.
Take care and stay safe. By the way, hold thumbs for me, as I have been approached by a publisher for the full manuscript of The Blood Trilogy.

Ian Carr | 3 comments Well my book is about a disgraced ex-British army officer who finds himself working in Natal at the start of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. It is a an adventure/thriller but hopefully general readers of historical fiction will find it of interest. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00P0...

Cheryl (cherylkahla) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Cheryl from Johannesburg, South Africa. I have a website that is very neglected, and might fill it this year with writing and reviews (www.cherylwrites.com)

I read a wide variety of books, from autobiographies and dystopian to sci-fi and fantasy. I've set my goal at 50 books for 2015 and it covers a lot of Christopher Hitchens, Chuck Palahniuk, JRR Tolkien and Jk Rowling.

I have just finished (Don't You) Forget About Me, which is a mind f*** of a book, and currently busy with another weird and wonderful book: 1Q84.

Sadly, I don't read enough South African books. This needs to change.

Besides reading and writing, I love:
Cats - Have 2
Tattoos - Have 8
Piercings - 2 lips rings
Art, music and martial arts (Not practicing anything at the moment though, but did Krav Maga a while back.)

I think that covers it? Ask, if I left anything out. :)

Marcia Mandisi Mabaso (marciamandisimabaso) | 6 comments Hello SA Reads,

I am a new South African author, having published my grandaunt's biography who was a South African religious Sister. We started working on this book in 2016, in 2020 she passed away due to Covid19 before the book could be published. It was published on her birthday and I have reflected on why she wanted to publish her story.

Firstly she wanted to share her lifestory with the world, plant a seed that could nourish ones soul and share the lessons she had learnt.

I would really appreciate it, if you could put this book on your list of next reads and drop me a review when you are done.

About the book

The Adventurous Nun – Stories my family told me is a comprehensive biography of Sister Mildred Lungile Madlala, a Franciscan Missionary of Mary (FMM), born on Mistake Farm, KwaZulu-Natal south coast, South Africa. As a Sister, a nun, a Franciscan Missionary of Mary, she dedicated her whole life to God until the end. She wanted to tell her story to inspire, teach and motivate others. This book is written for anyone in the world, including people who do not belong to the Roman Catholic Church.
As a FMM, Sister Mildred worked and met people in many different countries including South Africa, Congo, Kenya, Mauritius, France, Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), Italy, Switzerland, England and Madagascar. She was a teacher by profession, and an interpreter as she was fluent in English, French and Swahili, and could converse in Italian, with isiZulu being her mother tongue. This biography is thus available in French, Swahili, and, importantly, in isiZulu, because she believed in communicating to people in their mother tongue.
Sister Mildred attended school at St Francis College Mariannhill with the late liberation struggle icon Steve Biko. In later life she wholeheartedly followed her calling as a nun which she first felt when she was just eight years old. Over the years she met and engaged with Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Otunga, and slept in the home of Mary of the Passion. Her adventurous journey with Jesus was not without danger, though; she was followed by a lion in Kenya, and survived the civil war in Zaire before finally succumbing to Covid-19 in Madagascar.
Although she didn’t spend much time with them, Sister Mildred’s love for her blood relatives never diminished. Throughout the book tales are woven of family interactions, to preserve the history of this family which produced such an extraordinary woman.
Practically, the book explains what a nun is as well as the work that nuns are involved in. When Sister Mildred was in Rome, she wrote about her life in the form of poems which are published here. In the book, she also shares lessons that she learnt throughout her journey.
It’s a stirring story of a woman’s passion for Jesus, but most of all for her passion to serve His people to the very best of her ability. Sister Mildred did this with alacrity until the very end.
