I need someone to teach me how to roleplay properly, because so far all my roleplays turned into stories and got reeeeally complicated backstories and stuff and are HUGE. I need a nice quaint silly little roleplay where I can learn the basic skills etc.

I'm sort of in the same position. I've never really roleplayed before but i want to.

yeah, it's kinda weird, because on tumblr there's all these roleplays and I don't know how to use them, and I don't thin kI'd be there enough anyway.
But here is good to roleplay because, well I just like it better.
but then I just need to learn basic skills a little more. And I don't get roleplays where people use characters from other stories and write basically fanfiction with them and change everything with Alternate Universes (AU's)
so yeah.
I know a little, and am kind of self teaching, but I don't really know if I'm doing it right.

Hey, just jumping in! ^.^

I started rping about a year ago, and made the brilliant decision of plunging right in to a group roleplay with movie characters. I did excellently (toot-toot), but it was difficult to get the hang of for the first month or so.
One thing that's never lost in roleplays is writing integrity (or at least it shouldn't be). It's a common misconception that your stories and writing should be fitting to the roleplay; while it's the exact opposite. Writing is what makes the game, and AU's, fanfictions, claimed characters, etc are nothing but tools to utilize your writing.
There's nothing different between an AU plot and a regular plot - just different storyline.
