This time, instead of using the now-defunct forums on prometheus-unbound.org, we'll discuss the book we're reading on GoodReads and in our Google+ community and during our weekly G+ Hangouts.
The book selection process for now will simply be me announcing what book I'll be reading each month. No cumbersome voting process. You are more than welcome to send me book-of-the-month suggestions.
There is a Lightmonthly Read category set up in the community. Feel free to post your reactions and comment on each others' posts there. Drop into our weekly Hangout, currently on Sundays between 4 and 5, sometimes as late as 6, pm EST.
The August 2013 Lightmonthly Read is +Daniel Abraham's The Dragon's Path.
It's the first novel in The Dagger and the Coin epic fantasy series about money, commerce, and war. I've been looking for science fiction or fantasy that features commerce and banking prominently and this one has a protagonist who was raised as the ward of a banking house.
I hope you'll join me in reading and discussing The Dragon's Path this month. I'm on page 29 as I write this.
Here's the book description:
All paths lead to war...
Marcus' hero days are behind him. He knows too well that even the smallest war still means somebody's death. When his men are impressed into a doomed army, staying out of a battle he wants no part of requires some unorthodox steps.
Cithrin is an orphan, ward of a banking house. Her job is to smuggle a nation's wealth across a war zone, hiding the gold from both sides. She knows the secret life of commerce like a second language, but the strategies of trade will not defend her from swords.
Geder, sole scion of a noble house, has more interest in philosophy than in swordplay. A poor excuse for a soldier, he is a pawn in these games. No one can predict what he will become.
Falling pebbles can start a landslide. A spat between the Free Cities and the Severed Throne is spiraling out of control. A new player rises from the depths of history, fanning the flames that will sweep the entire region onto The Dragon's Path-the path to war.
