Finished!! I forgot to update more, oops... Anyway (view spoiler)[ I loved all that fantasy stuff that happened at the end. Even though I sort of predicted it would be Cain, I wasn't sure how he was doing it, and that bit was interesting. The final battle was everything I could have hoped for! It was dramatic and intense and great. I'm mad that she broke up with Dorian. I understand why, but I would've made that happen in book two. I mean, she'll totally get with Chaol next, and I don't like being able to predict that. Dorian and her were so cute, arghhh. That kiss was PERFECT!!!! <3 (hide spoiler)]

It's understandable. I ended up reading 7 books at the beginning of the month because of a reading slump. Take your time, it's not a problem.

--Jeez. I knew these names were unique/hard to pronounce, and I read/knew how to pronounce them going into this, but I keep trying to pronounce Celaena's name like Selena. Fail, brain.
--How did Celaena end up captured/imprisoned? (Note: we're told a little later she believes another assassin, or several perhaps, turned her in.) Why is she so important to the King? Where are/what happened to her parents? (Note: her dad...died? maybe? or something. what about her mom?)
--The banter between Celaena and Chaol is a TON of fun to read. I love that she's so damn...spunky? Independent is obviously a character strength with her, I wasn't surprised by that...but she's so snarky! And yet...sort of girly at the same time? She seems to care, at least a little, about her appearance, what she's wearing, etc. A snarky assassin with a penchant for fashion...I love it!
--Dorian also seems an intriguing character. He obviously wants to please his father...but he doesn't want to BE his father, which is something I think far too many "royal" characters make the mistake of wanting in the beginnings of their stories.
--Celaena obviously hasn't made much of a friend in Lady Kaltain. Oops.
--So why did the magic "disappear"? I doubt very much that it just "sensed" the King's banishment of magic usage. What was the real contributing factor here?
--Good. Yes. Let's hide her behind a false name and backstory. Because that works out for EVERYONE who tries it. XD
--Why exactly does the King WANT a hired assassin slave? I mean, apart from the obvious reasons--is there some other reason to this sudden desire?

--So the tournament or competition or whatever it is you want to call it has officially begun...and people (read: contestants) are being picked off one by one. Is this the work of one of the other competitors? Or someone on the outside? If someone on the outside...what's the purpose? What do they gain, murdering these people?
--I think Celaena is letting herself feel a bit TOO aligned with Nox, to be honest. He seems like a nice enough fellow...a little bit boring, a little bit bland character-wise...and that makes me very, VERY suspicious of him. Like...he's TOO bland, to be in such a fierce contest. To be in such a fierce line of work. He's hiding something; I'm just not sure what. Celaena needs to be careful, though--she's getting too close.
--So both Dorian and Chaol want to be near our assassin...for various reasons that boil down to pretty much the same thing. Watching them be all petty and jealous about who she talks to/spends time with/helps is pretty entertaining, considering they both KNOW the other one knows that they know they're both jealous and being stupid about it. Hello, obviously she's a BIT more preoccupied with surviving and not being returned to prison to really care...right?
--I think Princess Nehemia might know when Celaena is lying? It seems to me she watches the assassin's eyebrows/forehead for signs of truth or misdirection; I'm pretty sure she knows SOMETHING is up, and I'm pretty sure she knows Celaena isn't quite who she says she is...but how MUCH does she know, really? I guess time will tell.
--How exactly does whats-his-bucket grumpy-puss know who Celaena really is? I mean, only a small amount of people in the castle know she's even there...so how did he find out? Who let the information slip? And why?
--I'm surprised we haven't seen more interaction between the King and Dorian. I suppose the Prince is doing everything in his power to steer clear of his father, but still...it's a little weird to go so long without them meeting at least once, isn't it?
--What are Wyrdmarks? How do they play into this story? And if magic is REALLY dead and gone from the land......why are they suddenly showing up on the murder sites?
--Again...WHO is our murderer? And what are they seeking?

Chapters 1-14 (Inclusive) (view spoiler)[ This book seems a bit dull to me so far. Not much has happened. I find it quite amusing to watch Celaena attempt to keep her temper at bay, though. I quite like her character, I love the fiery and independent protagonists. I'm hoping that Chaol doesn't become a love interest, because I think that him and Celaena are better off as bickering friends, and it adds some amusement to an otherwise (sort of) dark story. As I said, not much has happened yet but I have the feeling a lot of things will unfold, otherwise it wouldn't have such good ratings, obviously. I'm excited to continue. (hide spoiler)]

I found it difficult to get into at first, too, but I'm stubborn, and so many people have recommended it, I persevered. I'm enjoying it more now; after the first hundred pages, it begins getting better (at least, I thought so).

Pages 211-302 (Chapters 28-40) [random thoughts/questions]:

--The scene with Dorian the morning of Yulemas was...interesting to read. I was slightly amused by Celaena's sudden change of attitude; the candy she wolfed down (a gift from Dorian, of course) must have done her soul good, or something. Also, I take it Yulemas is a holiday like Christmas, so that helps as well. All the same, I was worried for a moment, reading her sudden chipper demeanor, that the candy MIGHT have been tampered with. I'm glad it wasn't; hyper/happy Celaena is something I hope we see more of in the future, she was fun to read!
--Also, the puppy gift was adorable. Top marks, Prince Dorian. Way to pay attention. But I sort of...get the feeling perhaps Celaena prefers Chaol's surly, stoic attitude to the Prince's; she understands her place in the world, and the fact that she's loathe to actually LIKE the crowned royals who slaughtered her people years ago...well, that isn't something that can be easily forgotten.
--So...Celaena believes Nehemia is playing them all for fools. I have to admit, I hadn't considered the possibility; her character is written so meek and mild, I didn't even THINK to wonder if perhaps it was an act. I think that's one of the things I like most about Maas's writing style: you don't always see things coming.
--And...nothing happened at the party, except Celaena danced most of it with Dorian and further heightened Lady Kaltain's hatred of her. I wonder...what is with Kaltain's headaches? She seems to be suffering an awful lot of them.
--ALSO, what the hell was up with that scene with Cain?! And where exactly did he run off to, after? I don't think we've seen him or heard him mentioned since then, so...is he hiding? Is he dead? Where is he?!
--The puppy better not get killed in the course of whatever battles are approaching; I've read too many books with dog deaths as plot points lately, I'll be disappointed if it happens here.

--I just don't understand why Celaena insists on "playing pretend" with Prince Dorian when it's OBVIOUS she doesn't love him the way she loves Chaol. Does she not realize she loves Chaol?
--I'm not surprised she didn't realize the wine was poisoned; she wasn't expecting it there, of all places, and in that moment, she's forgotten everything but her need to win, her nervousness at what's to come. But what exactly was Nehemia doing? Protecting her, I think. It's also interesting that she can see what's going on--is that part of her secrets? Does she know things others don't, believe in things others might have forgotten?
--I'm curious to see how Elena plays a role in the coming books; I'm sure Celaena's life is only going to get more difficult as the King's assassin.
--THANK YOU. Finally, she realizes a relationship with Dorian isn't what she wants! It only took her the entire book to realize it.
--I don't like the King. I don't like the King. I DON'T like the King.
--I hope Celaena doesn't decide to push Chaol away to "protect" him; it NEVER works that way, especially in books--that person USUALLY ends up more hurt than they would have been otherwise.
--Also, I sort of feel bad for Kaltain. She was just another pawn in the King's game; her ending isn't going to be a good one, I don't think.
--I'm intrigued to see what happens next in this series!

There were some things I didn't like about this book, though I enjoyed the read overall. I think a few of the plot elements could have been handled a bit different and I was disappointed with the ending, but: 4/5 Stars

Chapters 14-28 (Inclusive): (view spoiler)[ This book is starting to pick up, but I'd still like a bit more action. Hopefully some stuff will happen where Celaena will have to show off her badass assassinating skills. I'm all for girls who can slice and dice like it's nothing (in books, of course...). Unfortunately I feel a love triangle coming on with Celaena, Chaol and Dorian, and if it happens, I don't think I'm gonna like it. I have faith that Celaena is a strong enough character not to spend her time dwelling on boys. There are some things I'm excited to (hopefully) find out:

-> How did Cain find out who Celaena really is? I'm betting that the Duke told him, but how did he find out?
-> I still don't really get how magic just "died off" by order of the king. This is probably me just missing part of the story... did the king just kill all of the Fae and the magic died with them?
-> I feel like Nehemia is hiding something, and that maybe she has another reason for hanging around with Celaena so much. But that's just me.
-> What the heck is Kaltain gonna do so she can go after Dorian?
-> I'm pretty sure that like nearly every character is hiding something. I love the suspense but I want to know so badly!

The story is moving a little bit slow for my tastes but nonetheless, Maas knows how to have her audience on the edge of their seats! (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 29-42 (Inclusive): (view spoiler)[ Oh jeez! Things just got exciting SUPER fast. The story was beginning to pick up since the last time I posted here, and the suspense was building up. Cain killed all those champions! I can't believe I overlooked him and thought it was something else. I'm really glad that Nehemia isn't as bad as I thought she was after that scene in the library, seeing as she assisted Celaena after finding her bleeding. Hopefully in the next chapter we get some explanation about Nehemia's purposes. I'm growing to like the little romance between Celaena and Dorian, but his father sentenced her to Endovier, so I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't go for him. I'm really excited to continue on and finish this book! (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 43-55 (end): (view spoiler)[ Wow! That book ended up being a lot better than I expected with the way the first half was going. It took a while to get into, but it was definitely worth it. I'm a bit sad that Celaena broke it off with Dorian but I'm also a pretty happy that she was smart enough to do so. But I'm assuming that now that Dorian is slightly more out of the picture, Chaol plans to move in. I'm honestly hoping she remains single for a while because I don't really like protagonists that just bounce between 2 guys. Nonetheless, I'm excited to read the second book and I'm hoping that I can buy it within the next month. (hide spoiler)]
