Deb Omnivorous Reader | 61 comments Hello wonderful librarians could someone please add this book for me;

* Title; Kalevala Guide
* Author(s) name(s); Irma-Riitta Jarvinen
* ISBN (or ASIN); 978-952-222-193-3
* Publisher; Finnish Literature Society, Helsinki
* Publication date; 2010
* Format; (not sure what 'format' refers to...)Paperback?
* Description; The book will provide you with the basics of the Kalevala, in a nutshell – what you need to know about the most widely translated work of Finnish literature? How does the Kalevala relate to other epics of the world? A synopsis of the poems and an introduction to the main characters as well as to the main themes of the epic are included. The book will give you the facts about the work of Elias Lönnrot, and explain the Kalevala metre. It will give you insight to the relationship between the Kalevala and the oral singing culture, on which the Kalevala is based. Kalevala-inspired music, art, literature and drama are introduced. The book is illustrated.

* Link to cover ; https://kirjat.finlit.fi/index.php?sh...

Many thanks
Deborah

Herbstkind Hello Deborah.

I just added it for you (you can find it here https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... or wait for it to show up in your search)

Have fun!

P.S.: You don't have to be a librarian to add new books. When you search for it and can't find it on the top right there is an option "manually add new book".

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 61 comments Thanks Herbskind - I never knew that; I have been bothering you guys whenever I needed an addition. I promise to try it next time!

Armi - Thanks for the fix. I am sorry about the two dots, I don't actually know how to use them. I did look in the 'symbols' option on my pc but I could not figure out where they were. I apologise for my cultural ignorance.

The "two dots" are called an umlaut :)
(sorry, I'm the child of a teacher of German...)

A very random and unnecessary nitpick, but in case anyone's interested: The author is Finnish and in Finnish ä isn't an umlaut like it is in German, it's one of the "extra" vowels of the Finnish alphabet, representing the open front vowel æ, like in "cat".

It does, however, look exactly the same as the Germanic umlaut, so it's not something anyone needs to take into consideration here. But as a Finnish-speaking linguistics major I couldn't help pointing this out. Sorry. Everything is in order here. Carry on!

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 61 comments Umlaut! or æ! Good to know.
I just got back from Finland and Sweden and I am afraid the punctuation just made me whimper quietly. Lucky for me most Finns and Swedes have extremely good English.
