I'm reading Allegiant, the last book of the trilogy. It's not bad, but the entire cycle is becoming boring, too many radical changes, more like a tv series. And yesterday I started Words of Radiance, the second book of this series. After two chapters, I can say I love it.

Does the iPad edition have any illustrations, ever? Cover illustration? I know you're text oriented, as am I, Gundula, but my edition has several lovely ink drawings.

Some might, but I got a cheap version that claims to be the unabridged German text and so far, this has proven to true. I also do not think that Heidi was originally illustrated.
Lisa wrote: "Gundula, Unabridged is the most important thing!"Both unabridged and for me, even an unabridged version that "modernised" the text would be problematic. I read one German version of Heidi, that changed the hymns Heidi read to the Grandmother into more modern sounding lyrics (not acceptable for me, although I can grudgingly understand it, as long as the original is still readily available).
Gundula, I shudder to think about the editions I've read over the years. When I think of unabridged I also think of as originally published. When younger I never realized changing, editing, etc. happened. I get why it does but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm sure my edition of Heidi has deviations from how it was originally published. I still love it though.

In one of Johanna Spyri's novels, one of the main protagonists dies of consumption at the end of the novel, but in the English translation, the girl does not die and survives her illness (considering tht this completely changes the ending of the novel, this is simply not acceptable, but it happens more often than we realise).
Uh, oh. Gundula, are you talking about (major spoiler!!!) (view spoiler)
Yes, another outcome is not acceptable. That's a whole different story!!! I believe in editions being the way the author intended. If someone wants a different account/story, they should write their own books!

No, it is another book, not nearly as well known called Gritli's Children

In the last month I've finished The Anubis Gates, The Carpet People and Children of Dune. Now I'm reading Trespassers, a nice sci fi story, and The Dream Millenium.
Hi guys,Currently I am reading three books in parallel..
1. The Authoritative Calvin n Hobbes
This is my daily dose of humour to end the
day.
2. Sea of Poppies - Amitav Ghosh
This book has been nominated for the
Booker prize. The premise of the book is
India in the backdrop of oncoming Opium
war in China.
3. Brahmins & Bungalows : Travels through
South Indian History. By Kavita Watsa
Currently I am fascinated by history of
southern India. Got this book in British
Library.Started it. Its a good read.
I am currently reading Helen Dunmore's A Spell of Winter. It is the first winner ever of the Orange Prize, a very prestigious UK literary award. It is an unusual read, but one I am getting more and more drawn into.
