Melanti Nope! group mods have no special privileges when it comes to contacting support. But the people in the feedback group might be able to tell you what's going on - either because it's been brought up before or one of the staff that monitors that forum might see your post before the rest of the staff sees your email.

Thank you Melanti! you raise good points about the feedback group.

Julia, I just emailed support to see if they can clear up what's going on.

Let me know if you hear anything. and I will keep you posted ..

Julia (juliastrimer) Thanks so much, Laura and Melanti--I got in touch with the moderators of my library group, and they advised me to do the "Windows Update", which seems to have updated my browser, Internet Explorer 7.

So all is well--no more message at the top of the page. I appreciate your patience with a techno-peasant such as myself!

Jemaimah (iishmachii) | 20 comments hi! just a question
how do you get a free copy of book for review?

message 59: by LaLaLa Laura (last edited Dec 10, 2014 05:53PM) (new)

LaLaLa Laura (laurabhoffman) | 4443 comments Mod
Hi, Mhai. Good question. Goodreads is host to many authors and groups looking for people to review their books.

Check out our Author Cafe threads to looks for some free offers here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group....

There are some groups here on Goodreads that offer free books in exchange for reviews. Try these...

https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
And https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

You can also obtain some free books on netgalley.com and firsttoread.com. I hope this helps!

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 116 comments Laura is there a reason The Killer Angels is on our shelves? It's longer 250 pages, but I wasn't sure if it was there for a special reason.

message 62: by LaLaLa Laura (new)

LaLaLa Laura (laurabhoffman) | 4443 comments Mod
That should definitely not have been on the shelf. I removed it. The only books on our shelves that are longer than 250 pages are essays and compilations because they are composed of short stories and can be read in parts. Good catch Amber. Thank you.

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 116 comments You're welcome Laura!

Julia (juliastrimer) Laura, I just posted in the classic nominations thread that Beloved is too long for our shelf. Goodreads lists it as 220 pages, but Amazon has it at over 300, and the shortest I find when I click "other editions" is 275.

You'd need to remove it from both polls, alas. But I agree with you that the books on our shelves need to stick to the 250 pages or less limit.

Thanks again for all you do :-)

Oh ok. will do that tonight. Thank you Julia for being so nice! I appreciate you too.

Julia (juliastrimer) Laura, a new twist in my month of computer problems. This website came up with a warning that it has a certificate error, and recommended I not continue to the site!

I'm doing it this time to let you know, but I don't usually bypass my computer's security. Hope you can figure out why I'd get this warning for goodreads! :-(

I got the same message too as I was signing on to respond to you.

Maybe something on their site doesn't match or isn't updated. I will message them and find out. Thank you!

This is their message from the feedback group. a lot of readers were having the same issue:

"No information or security has been breached, we just don't have the correct certificate issued at the moment due to a bug in the system.

We should be back up. You may need to restart your browser for it to register the newly issued certificate. Let me know if you are still having problems after that."

Julia (juliastrimer) Thanks, Laura--looks like all is well now.

Julia (juliastrimer) That's really good of you, Sandy--I've tried the game a few times, but for me it took more time than the other games (keeping track of entries, having to redo the formula each time, etc.) I'm sure some people enjoy it, but this would let people like me join in, with Sandy willing to take my turn if I guess the title.

Thanks again, Sandy :-)

message 74: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliastrimer) I agree--Laura is such a great moderator and it's her call :-) Still think it's great of you to offer! :-)

Sandy,
I think you are on point that a lot of participants don't want to host the game although they do like to play.

I think that is great you would be willing to be the "permanent host" of the game. Meanwhile, the person who guesses correctly can still have the option to set up the next session, if they chose.

Thank you so much for that, Sandy!!!!

Julia (juliastrimer) Laura, I see that Lysistrata is up in both polls, but it belongs in classics. I nominated The Story of My Life by Helen Keller for memoir.

Only two books in each poll? Very strange--might as well just have threads for both so people can choose one or both. Hmmmm

message 77: by amber (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 116 comments I believe the polls have simply been set up early. They aren't actually open for voting yet. The threads say we have until the 10th to nominate.

yeah, Amber is right. I started setting them up early. I will make sure it is complete before voting time.

message 79: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliastrimer) Thanks, Laura--just be sure to pull Lysistrata out of memoirs :-)

Rochelle Brown | 10 comments Hi, Laura!

Excuse me if this is not appropriate. Is it all right if I post info here about a Goodreads group I've started? I don't want to step on anybody's toes.

Allegra | 116 comments I don't see a link to the February voting. How can I get there? (Admittedly, my phone could be the issue)

message 88: by Melanti (new)

Melanti https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

The phone app is awful, and there's a lot of group functions missing from it. But you can still get there via a direct link though it can take forever to load.

message 89: by Allegra (new)

Allegra | 116 comments Thanks Melanti. For now it will have to do
