I can't say that I like Evie after the first chapter, but it was fun to read it! I think I might like Memphis more :)

Memphis is my favorite atm, but I enjoy Evie as well. She's snappy, but not so much that it becomes annoying.

I like how they're from different backgrounds (social/ethnical/etc) so we get to see a lot of the different 'sides' of 1920s US / New York.

I find the mysteries about each of the characters super intriguing as well! I really like how well the supernatural element fits into the setting. There's the realistic stuff, like bets and corruption and people trying to get out of poverty, and then there's haunting dreams and miracles and chilling prophecies. Idk I can't properly explain it but it fits together so naturally!

So tense and suspenseful - the characters were great!

Also love the issue Mabel has with standing in the shadow of her parents. I hope she gets some amazing character development.

Really I love everything about this book atm, from the setting and the huge thematical background to the characters - the only thing I'm not sold on is the impending Evie-Sam-Jericho love triangle. It just seems so stereotypically 'good guy vs bad guy' to me, and Sam is the only character I'm not that attached to. (hide spoiler)]

I really like that Evie feels like a realistic character - she's not perfect and she doesn't have the 'flaws that are really strengths' that we see so often either.

Yes, not too fond of Mabel's parents. I do hope she'll get to shine in the next books :)

(view spoiler)[ overall i really liked the book, the only thing is it could have been more suspenseful, it took me so much longer than usual to get through it. it wasnt boring to read in any way, but it sometimes dragged a bit.

i loved the writing style though, and the second-to-last chapter where it kind of got big and philosophical again was amazing. also loved the characters and their development, and im excited to find out what project buffalo is. if the governemt is involved will that mean the next book will be more political? i would totally be down for that.

and @Andreea the murder mystery side was alright, i think libba bray really got down the 'creepy mood' kinda writing, but the ending wasnt as epic as i maybe wouldve expected or liked? i feel like she kind of stalled the reader to expect the diviners to come together at the end to defeat the beast (thats what was hinted at), but that is probably going to happen in one of the next books.

but overall it was really good, especially for the first book in a series! (hide spoiler)]
