The Ending

So I haven't talked to anyone who understands the ending to this series. I wrote a fanfic trying to create a happy ending and had many interstering reviews about people's theories, but no one could really come to a satisifying conclusion. What do you all think?

I have to say, I wasn't very happy with it either. I read the first 3 in middle school (I own the 3rd only) and didn't even realize there was another one until very recently. After 4 books of them trying to be together, you would have assumed they would end up together. Some people will say that it was a realistic ending because not every ending is happy, but, hello, the whole series is very UN-realistic. I'd like to hear the author's POV.

I always thought that the boy Annie meets in the last one was supposed to be a reincarnation of strat (to some extent) and it did kinda-sorta-but-in-a-weird-way end happily but now that I think about it maybe I need to go back and reread them. Although I have to say, I did not understand the point of the third book. Any insights?
