[Group Events] F2F21: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov - September 28, Saturday, 3 PM, Cafe Noriter, Malate, Manila
Tip: If you are too lazy, just take a photo of yourself wearing a blonde wig and heart-shaped sunglasses, and type the name "Lolita" somewhere on the resulting piece of art.
BLUE: I was seriously tempted to follow Angus' tip until I read/saw your comment. Okay, I get it. XD
Ang ending pala ng post-discussion activity ay do your best Lolita impersonation with an Instagram selfie. XD
Lynai: I was planning to do that actually =)) Pero omg I'm imagining everyone doing it and I can't stop laughing :))Zim: Pose pose din pag may time XD
Angus: G. I can't wait!!!!

I will! HAHA!! Wait~ Blue? Ano po ung name niyo dun sa F2F? :)
I know the Design A Book Cover activity something is already labeled as "Post-Discussion Activity", but I will still ask:Is the activity limited to those who will be present in F2F? :D
Tina: That's why I posted it this early. Medyo demanding na naman ang post-activity na naisip namin, hihihi.Ingga: So see you then? :D
Buddy Monique: Thanks for that! I have to add something to the instructions, that you can get someone to do the book cover for you.
However, it is strongly encouraged that you attend para masaya lang.
Aaron: Okay, I'll update the rules. Maybe we should allow multiple entries just because more entries, more fun!
Aaron: Because we are not believers of censorship in art and because Saturday is not a working day for most of us, yes, semi and full NSFW are allowed. Will update the rules na rin. Thanks!
I am not good at doing art so maybe I'll wear a lolita costume instead and take a selfie and do some instagram filters or make it anime-ish and send to Angus' email? URGH. I am not good at art omg. May I sing, instead? -_____-
Question for the Post-Discussion Activity: 3. Dimensions of the image file should be around 7.5 inches by 5.5 inches, roughly the dimensions of a trade paperback.
I'm not very good at this so this might be a stupid question, but I will ask anyway: if it's a .jpg file, what would be the approximate size of the image in pixels? :)
Cousin, it really depends on your resolution. I think most image editing software has an option to create new image document using inches instead of pixels. But if you can't find that option, on a 150ppi resolution:7.5x5.5 inches = 1125x825 pixels
On a 72ppi:
7.5x5.5 inches = 540x396 pixels
So I will make sure that my book cover is roughly 540x396 pixels. Thanks, cousin! :DAnd thanks, Buddy! I still feel like it is, though, since no one asked but me. Haha. :))
Hello neat boys and sweet girls! I just wanted to show you this:
James Franco is too young to be H.H., but what the hell, this photo made me laugh. More here.
Event invite sent! :DAlso, sorry guys, the green car is unavailable daw on this day (sabi ng may-ari), so I cannot fix carpool. Unless someone volunteers their car. Pero madali lang naman puntahan yung place, based on Angus' commute instructions above. :) See you then!
Hello, friends! We have some announcements. The 2013 celebration of Banned Books Week will be held from September 22-28. More info can be found here.
Coincidentally, our book of the month, Lolita, is the 11th most frequently challenged classic book (at least in America) according to the American Library Association. Although the Banned Books Week is not a worldwide celebration, let's somehow celebrate it on the F2F Book Discussion.
How? Think of a frequently challenged or banned book that you would recommend to your friends (aside from Lolita, if ever you would recommend it). You may check this link for your reference. If possible, kindly bring a copy of the banned book (just because we love seeing piles of books). It will be like an exchange of book recommendations, and this will be our pre-discussion activity.
Another announcement, rather, a reminder, is the deadline for the submission of the Lolita book cover design contest. It's still on September 25 (until 11:59 PM), but if possible, kindly send them in earlier (because I'll be terribly busy with ... a concert). Mae and I have decided that the winner will receive a Fully Booked gift certificate. Please check the guidelines at the top of this thread (message 1).
We have also tried the food at the venue. Our palates were pleased, but preparation is at a plodding pace. Heh! Just do your best to come on time, and please wear your best socks or have your pedicure done because the area that we reserved requires us to take off our foot wear and sit like Indians. You've been warned. :D
Will my entry be disqualified if it's not the right size? Am having a hard time making it the exact size eh. Huhu. :(
^Not really, but if it's smaller than the prescribed size, the printing might distort it and it could affect the judging.
Okay, today is the day. You still have 10.25 hours if you want to make it count. Reminder: we are strict on deadlines. Some members can attest to this (we didn't accept their late entries in the F2F7 Folio; brutal, I know, but let's be fair). And yeah, there will be a winner because there are participants (wonderful cover designs, I must say). See you on Saturday! And thanks for joining. :)
Hi guys, I will be bringing cake pops tomorrow, but I will give priority to those who answer "Yes" to the event invite (or to those who have sent me an SMS). I'll check the event invite until 9 PM tonight. See you all! :)
See you guys tomorrow! :DOh and after the F2F, we'll talk a bit about 2014 discussions and ReaderCon (kahit onti tayo) . :D So excited to see you all. :)

Post-Discussion Activity:
There has been an unending interest in designing new covers for Lolita. And because of that, here's our activity: design your own Lolita book cover.
Guidelines:
1. You may use any kind of medium. Oil on canvas, pencil, MS Paint, Adobe Photoshop, an open exhibition, your phone's camera, anything, will do.
2. Whatever media you use, convert your book cover to an image file, preferably .jpg. You may take a photo of it or you may scan it. Fortunately for those who will use photo editing software, just save it.
3. Dimensions of the image file should be around 7.5 inches by 5.5 inches, roughly the dimensions of a trade paperback.
4. Send your book cover at angusmiranda at yahoo dot com
5. Deadline of submission is on September 25.
Tip: If you are too lazy, just take a photo of yourself wearing a blonde wig and heart-shaped sunglasses, and type the name "Lolita" somewhere on the resulting piece of art.
Seriously, you may check out these existing book covers or these designs submitted by readers for inspiration and ideas. Note that we might not be able to detect any form of copying or cheating or whatnot, and so we invoke the honor system. So yes, try to be creative and original. It would really help if you have a very good idea of what the novel is about, so go ahead and read.
And oh, we nearly forgot that there is a prize waiting for the best book cover design. We are great believers of the reward system, but we still have to finalize stuff. The judging process is a secret, so for now, read and have fun!
If you have questions regarding the book discussion details and the post-discussion activity, post them here.
Additional Notes:
1. You may or may not be present during the F2F. Your entry is still valid so long as you meet the instructions above.
2. You may or may not be the author of the work. However, it should be done someone you know (like a graphic designer friend). We would have no way to validate this so again, we invoke the honor system.
3. You may have multiple entries.
4. You may submit NSFW entries. It's up to you how to draw the borders between artistry and pornography.
