1) Did you expect Jon to keep his role in Samwell’s assignment a secret?
I think that he will so that he does not undermine him.

2) Do you think Samwell’s taking his vows with Jon before the heart tree will strengthen their friendship? I think this is a very strong friendship, which is why Sam wanted to take their vows together.

3) If the reason behind Mormont assigning him to the stewards was as Samwell stated, why was Ser Alliser smiling?
Perhaps simply because he knew Jon would feel humiliated. Also, Alliser may not understand the benefits and just see it as a lower position than the rangers.

4) Do you feel Lord Stark should have said something about Prince Joffrey’s paternity when he called the small council together?
I can’t figure out what would be the best timing for this. In some ways, it would be safer for Eddard to have the secret out so that he is not a target. On the other hand, these council members don’t strike me as particularly trust worthy.

5) Ohhhhh…Litterfinger is truly a viperous snake! Did this surprise you? What are your thoughts about Janos Slynt? Will there be repercussions for Ser Barristan, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, for his slight hesitation?
I don’t think Littlefinger takes anything personal. However, if he thinks Ser Barristan is less loyal to him, there will most certainly be repercussions.

6) Did Arya learn enough from Syrio to survive and make it back to Winterfell? Will she be reunited with her direwolf on the way home?
Yes – she is perhaps the wiliest of the children. And I hope that her wolf finds her quickly…

7) Sansa! Will she ever get a clue? Can you see her parroting reflected in what other courtiers say in from of Queen Cersei? Where you as appalled as I was that she had revealed their planned departure to Queen Cersei?
I am liking her less and less as this book goes on. Her telling the Queen of the planned departure shows the lack of depth. She is so focused on being queen and Joff, that she has lost sight of the polical goings on at court. Frankly, this makes her unsuitable to be a queen. (hide spoiler)]

1. Did anyone expect the dead men to come back to life? I did. Does that mean I've seen too many horror movies?
I did not see this coming at all! And it freaked me out!

2. What did you think the hand going down the throat was looking for - soul or heart? CREEPY!
I was so disturbed by this that I have no opinion. Just ick.

4. Did they say if anyone besides Jon survived? There was another zombie that he didn't deal with. Wonder what happened to him...but do I really want to know???????
I had visions of zombies running all about the wall. Certainly, this will make an interesting warning to the rest of the realm, right?

3. Was anyone surprised that so much time had passed? I didn't think it'd been a full year.
I was quite surprised. And a bit confused.

4. Anyone else thinking Catelyn is a bad mom? Why is she not going home to her two youngest kids? I understand her brother's in trouble and her father is dying, but she has kids. I can't fathom being away from my kids that long.
I know this is a different time, but I do believe she should be coming home. Particularly with the turmoil and threats to their lives.

5. Interesting that Rob's first reaction to Sansa's letter was "What's wrong with that girl." and not "They must have forced her to write this." What do you think?
I think he was reacting as the brother, and not the Lord, in that moment.

6. Bran's statement about Sansa loosing her Wolf makes me wonder how close those wolves are tied to the children. Seems like there could be another story just about that.
I thought this was an interesting insight. They do seem to understand the importance of the wolf with regard to the children.

7. Speaking of Bran, I feel so bad he can't be healed. I kept hoping he could. He's struggling so much with what he can do and what he would have been able to do. Any thoughts?
I was hoping that there would be some solution as well. But, I still think it will work out to be the right thing for him – perhaps this will influence him and help him develop in some certain way. It reminds me of Jon that seemed to have almost a death wish on the wall, but it seems like it will now work out for him.

8. Looks like raising the banners was a good choice on Robb's part. I still don't like him going to war.
I worry about him going off as well. He seems so young to lead this army.

9. So there is a dilemma is getting the father more important than trying to defeat the Others. Which do you think they should have done first?
This is an interesting tension in the story. I suspect they will regret not going after the others later, but Eddard’s dilemma is more pressing right now.

10. Dany and her husband were almost poisoned. Did you think it odd that Ser Jorah thought the wine was tainted? Could he have set it up to persuade Kahl Drago to wage war on the Seven Kingdoms?
I had not thought of that possibility, but the timing of the events does leave this as a possibility. Perhaps he was worried that Dany really would have made the same mistake as her brother and pushed Drago to move too quickly. At the same time, Robert did send out people that the Lannisters certainly did not call back.

11. Do you think that Dany and the Starks might become allies?
I think with Robert’s death it would be possible. It is still unclear how the Starks really view the Targaryans before Robert waged war. Then again, the Starks would likely resist Drago on principle as being an outsider. Now, the real question is how Jon fits into this scenario and whether he could be a bridge. (hide spoiler)]

Lisarenee's Questions for Chapter 56 (Tyrion) - Chapter 59 (Catelyn)

1. We now know that the mantra of the Lannisters is "Hear Me Roar." What is your opinion of it? I think it is not all that inventive or great.
It seems to fit in with the family. It seeks an acknowledgement of power.

2. Tyrion is finally back home. What did you think of the interaction between him and his father? I'm not feeling the love.
It seems the more we get to know Tyrion, the more he is shown as an outsider even in his own family. It is interesting that several characters acknowledge that Jaime has a soft spot for him and is protective of him. This could explain why Tyrion would be forgiving and supporting of Jaime, even though I don’t think he approves of much of his behavior.

3. Anyone wondering how Tyrion's newly formed motley crew will effect the games (game of thrones that is), or do you think Tyrion's father will kill them? Could insisting that Tyrion was theirs until they were compensated lead to their downfall?
I think they will remain as his band of misfits. I wonder what impact that they will have on the game of thrones, but I think they will make it possible for Tyrion to have more an impact that he could without any support.

4. Bronn saved Tyrion's butt, but it sounded like Tyrion didn't have a high regard for him. He brought up the fact he'd changed sides. Anyone surprised by this?
I think that Tyrion would need to rely on loyalty more heavily than some in this age because he could not rule with fear.

5. Sansa. What can I say? Anyone else like to smack some sense into her? Anyone else surprised she is still considered engaged to the young King? Do you think he likes her? I was a little confused by it until I read Eddard's chapter.
I was surprised that she was still engaged, but wondered if they would use her as they had hoped to use Jon Aryn’s son to keep his widow in line. Turns out, I think that is somewhat how they are using her. Although, they do seem to be talking like she is really going to be a queen. Could they be expecting Sansa to control her family eventually after the marriage? Because I just want to slap her for her immaturity I just don’t see that working out for them.

6. I must confess, I was a little afraid to read chapter 58. I didn't see any other Eddard chapters. I feared our relationship with him had come to an end. Anyone else relieved it wasn't? Do you think he'll cave in because of Sansa?
I am still worried for Eddard, but I think he will cave in rather than see Sansa killed. I suppose that if she becomes queen, he will also be bound to support the Lannister’s reign. Because a war between these two families has such wide spread implications throughout the kingdom, I think Eddard will be pushed in this direction.

7. So as I and I believe a few others of you suspected, Catelyn didn't fully believe herself a Stark. I'd think that after 5 children and several more years of being married to her husband she'd have felt she was a Stark. Anyone else think she really had a problem with her husband's infidelity? Could that be the reason?
I actually don’t think that is the reason. She seems to genuinely love Eddard at the point we pick up the story. However, she has a strong tie to her own family and her familial home that was not broken when she married. Perhaps the two worlds were so different, paired with the fact that she was not married by choice to Eddard, let to this situation.

8. What did you think of the agreement Catelyn reached with Lord Frey? That was an awful lot to ask for passage.
I think it showed the desperation they had to get across. It also may have served to heal the relationship with Lord Frey so that if they need to cross in the future, he will look on the request more kindly, whereas the opposite may be true for the Lannisters. He really was in a position to tip the balances either way. Also, arranged marriages were par the course, so if the match was not a bad one, perhaps the price was not really that high? I think that might happen in the next book! Wouldn't be shocked!

2) Something more than WOW! for the end of Chapter 60? Was it the biggest surprise of the story for you? If not, state your biggest surprise thus far.
Hmmm, I dunno what my biggest surprise was thus far... lots of good twists.

3) Let us say, for the purpose of this question, our suspicions about Jon Snow being the love child of Rhaegar and Lyanna are correct (of course, if they married, then he’s a Prince, right?). Question: Having read the Old Bear’s reveal, what do you make of him gifting Jon with Longclaw?

I totally see this as a big reveal in the last book.

4) Daenerys has no stomach for rape or slavery. When Ser Jorah tells Dany she is like her oldest brother, Rhaegar, we get a completely different picture of him. Comments on either of these statements?
I think Rhaegar was probably a pretty good man.


5) First impressions on Mirri Maz Duur? Do you think there will be consequences to their burning the temple?

Don't like her. She's not going to let it go that easy.

6) What do you think of Lord Tywin placing Tyrion and his wild “motley crew” in the vanguard? Do you believe Tyrion knows exactly what his father is doing? Do you think that there are limits on what a person can forgive?
I think Tywin better be careful. His son may be a dwarf, but he has the tongue that convinces people of things. He could turn people against his dad if he tried.


7) Was Tyrion’s defeat of the knight intelligence or luck? Were these battle scenes either too long or too graphic for you or were you too caught up in the telling to notice?
Ummm, wow, I dunno. It went so fast!


8) Were you impressed that Lord Robb Stark was more cautious than Lord Tywin expected?
I was impressed by Robb, yes.

9) What are the Starks are going to do with Jaime? Surely not let this Lannister brother go as easily as the first.
I hope not. But I don't see him being punished properly, as the story needs his villainy!

10) Any change from your initial impression of Theon Greyjoy? Quote: “And Lord Tywin?” Catelyn interrupted. “Have you perchance taken Lord Tywin, Theon?” Catelyn asks an eloquent question of him. How is his arrogance different from Jamie’s?
I didn't really notice much about Theon. I don't really have any feelings towards him right now.

1. Wow! So much going on. Do you think Daenerys' husband will survive and if so will he still be human? This whole blood magic sounds a little scary. I can't believe so much could happen in one Chapter.
Yeah it is. I already know what happens...

2. Eddard did die after securing his daughter's place. I frankly, wouldn't have believed they would have kept her safe. I figured once he was gone she would be exterminated (Sorry Doctor Who going on in the background). What did you think? Surprised she's still engaged? (I sound like a broken record, huh?)
I hate Sansa. I wish she had died instead of Eddard. Of course, the loss of Lady was really symbolic of the loss of her being a true Stark, as after she makes her choice to betray Arya to impress Joffrey, she makes selfish choices that negatively affect her family repeatedly after that -- starting with her lies getting Lady killed.

3. Sansa finally gets it, and you called it Lisa Kay, she's getting smacked around. Anyone surprised? Apparently Joffrey sees heads as appropriate tokens of affection - how romantic NOT!
I'm not surprised, and while I don't support domestic violence, I'd like to smack her around some. She's a selfish, whiny, self-absorbed, oblivious, rude, greedy, brainless little twit. And that's me putting my feelings nicely.

4. Has anyone taken notice of all the Sigils being presented? There are unicorns, bears, fish, lions, deer, wolves, golden roses, Falcons, dragons, kraken, etc Which would you want for your Sigil? Which is the least appealing? Which would you like to see come to life in the book? I hope this mean more of the sigils will come to life in the book. I want to see kraken and unicorns.
I'd want a dragon, a falcon, or a wolf. I'd love to see some of these creatures!

5. Okay not that I've taken a slight road trip I'll get back on track. Ayra has been surviving on the streets around the castle. Do you think Yoren from the wall will harm her? He seemed a little rough with her.
I think he's protecting her. That's why he kept insisting she go by BOY.

6. Anyone else think they'd find something on Jon's parentage in the family crypts? Were we totally wrong?
From what my friends have told me, his parentage has yet to be revealed, and we've had five books published so far.

7. Osha looks like she may play a more key role than I previously would have thought. Anyone else surprised?

Yeah, I thought she'd be a throwaway character. I'm intrigued by her though.

1) You called it Lisa Kay there were repercussions from burning down the temple. Mirri Maz Duur was a witch to do that to Dany. Dany tried to help in the only way she could and Mirri Maz Duur took everything away. Did you expect her to kill Dany's baby? I kind of wondered if that was the life she was referring to when she said there had to be a blood sacrifice. I kept hoping he was still alive. That maybe she just took him like Rumplestilskin wanted the princess' baby. Dang!
Well, she got her comeuppance. Dany totally got her back. I was so sad over the loss of Khal Drogo though. Their relationship was really interesting to read about. I stinking love her storyline and think it's my favorite of the storylines... though I do love Jon Snow's as well.

2) What did you think of the dragons suckling off Dany and her being unscathed by the fire? Why do you think her brother wasn't immune to the fire?
I thought the suckling was gross. I figured she was the dragon blood, as she loved her hot baths! Because her brother wasn't worthy of course! YAY DRAGONS!

3) They want Robb to be king. Did you see that one coming? I still mourn for Eddard. *sniff* I still like Jon more than Robb.
I wish Eddard could have lived over Sansa or Catelyn... but I understand the emotional payoff that provided and the driving force behind the rest of the Stark's character development. Sad day though. :(

I like Jon more than Robb, but I am liking Robb more now than earlier than in the book.

And how cool is it that he proved himself to those grown experienced men enough that they want him as king?

4) There appears to be no going back for Jon. He either stays at the wall or he dies. Anyone else disliking that? The way the Old Bear talked I thought there were times when they could leave.
Well, I think he'll be vital to the defense against those creatures from the North. And who knows, maybe we'll find out in book seven that he's the real hair to the throne?!


5) Out of curiosity, those of you of the *cough* "weaker" *cough* sex like me, would you have sided with the peace that Catelyn proposed or are you of the "off with their heads" crew? Okay, I'm somewhere in between.
I don't like Catelyn, but I'm normally more passive and less violent... but I dunno... these people have been relentless and without mercy.

6) Tyrion finally is acknowledged by his father as his son. Jamie is being talked poorly of. The Lannister family secret (all of Cersei's children being Jamie's) has still yet to be revealed. Were any of these things surprising? How do you think Tyrion will act. What do you think of his thought of taking his whore (why do I always feel bad using that word?) with him? Do we know how old he is? I kept thinking it would be ironic if the "whore" turned out to be that long lost wife of his, but I don't think that would be possible. I'm guessing that happened a very long time ago and he'd recognize her.

I love Tyrion's story, and hope he gets to prove his family wrong. I want him to be a hero while his family pays for their crimes, and I want his dad to admit that he mistreated him, and then die. LOL!

7) Thoughts overall on the book? Will you continue with the next book? Anyone up for reading it soon? Any thoughts as to whether we should read the series (as it won as our next series read) like this buddy read - 4 chapters at a time?
I can't wait for the next book. CAN'T WAIT. Even though this one took my 2/3 of the month to read!

8) A last minute add - Why have we not met Lord Stannis? I kept thinking we'd get to at least meet him in this book. He doesn't seem like he'd be that great of a King.

I am actually hoping that he has somehow hooked up with the children of the forest and will provide backup at some critical moment between Snow and the zombies.

No, no. This was the biggest chapter so far.

3) Let us say, for the purpose of this question, our suspicions about Jon Snow being the love child of Rhaegar and Lyanna are correct (of course, if they married, then he’s a Prince, right?). Question: Having read the Old Bear’s reveal, what do you make of him gifting Jon with Longclaw?
It again seems to be foreshadowing that Jon will end up being more than Eddard’s bastard. It is the time of sword that would be in the hands of a player in the game of thrones rather than a zombie outrider.

4) Daenerys has no stomach for rape or slavery. When Ser Jorah tells Dany she is like her oldest brother, Rhaegar, we get a completely different picture of him. Comments on either of these statements?
I think this confirms that it would be outside Rhaegar’s nature to have raped Lyanna. And once again confirms that the general reputation he had before crossing Robert, was as an individual on the right side of things. I think Dany has the same general nature, although I am hoping the most recent events do not bring out something more desperate or dark in her.

5) First impressions on Mirri Maz Duur? Do you think there will be consequences to their burning the temple?
I think she could be a good ally for Dany to have. I don’t see the burning of the temple as that significant because it was expected behavior for the warriors.

6) What do you think of Lord Tywin placing Tyrion and his wild “motley crew” in the vanguard? Do you believe Tyrion knows exactly what his father is doing? Do you think that there are limits on what a person can forgive?
I think Tyrion’s relationship with his father is very different than that with his brother. The father’s reaction to him may be more common in those days. But, he does seem to view Tyrion as simply expendable. And I think we will see a time when it makes sense for Tyrion to break with his family.

7) Was Tyrion’s defeat of the knight intelligence or luck? Were these battle scenes either too long or too graphic for you or were you too caught up in the telling to notice?
I think it was a bit of both. I am sure Tyrion would need to rely on his intelligence in fights throughout his life, so he could think quickly. Here, luck gave him an opportunity and he was able to go with it. Generally, the battle scenes did not bother me, although I may not have read them as closely.

8) Were you impressed that Lord Robb Stark was more cautious than Lord Tywin expected?
I was impressed. It shows Robb is maturing quickly.

9) What are the Starks are going to do with Jaime? Surely not let this Lannister brother go as easily as the first.
One would hope not. I actually hope that they don’t kill him either, but use him as a bargaining chip.

10) Any change from your initial impression of Theon Greyjoy? Quote: “And Lord Tywin?” Catelyn interrupted. “Have you perchance taken Lord Tywin, Theon?” Catelyn asks an eloquent question of him. How is his arrogance different from Jamie’s?
Initially, I was a bit suspicious of him. Now, I think I was right to be. In fact, the way he reacted to may things in this chapter showed his immaturity and the pettiness of his nature. His arrogance is different because he is bragging about the accomplishments of others and taking them as his own. This makes him even less trustworthy because if someone can make him feel even bigger than Robb, he will likely change his alliegiances. (hide spoiler)]

"Lanisters always pay their debts", so I think they will get all the armour promised. I don't think Tyrions father will kill them. I think they will give Tyrion more weight to follow his own agenda.

He knows where he stands with Bron. Tyrion says it how it is.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Cersei is keeping Sansa where she can influence and manipulate her the most. She is also a hostage.

I think he realises the treat to Sansa and will lie to protect her.

What else would keep him away so long. Can't help but think he's dead, though I hope he's ok and in hiding somewhere, maybe with the children of the forest if there are still some alive way north, gaining knowledge about how to fight the white walkers.

There are so many twists, I keeps expecting something bigger to come up next.

It makes me think that Rhaegar carried Lianna off because he loved her and treated her well, and Robert was jealous.

She presents well at first but I don't much you can really trust a woman who was raped, forced into slavery and watched her temple burn.

Lord Tywin sent his son to slaughter, expecting him to die, actually banking on him and his crew getting annialated. I don't think I could forgive that.

I enjoyed the battle scenes.

The rest of the Starks are still at war with the Lannisters, so Cersei needs to keep Sansa as a hostage. Though Joffrey is starting to make some of his own decisions, I wonder how well Cersei will be able to control her son.

3. Sansa finally gets it, and you called it Lisa Kay, she's getting smacked around. Anyone surprised? Apparently Joffrey sees heads as appropriate tokens of affection - how romantic NOT!
I don't have a lot of love for Sansa, but i detest Joffrey more and more if that is possible.

4. Has anyone taken notice of all the Sigils being presented? There are unicorns, bears, fish, lions, deer, wolves, golden roses, Falcons, dragons, kraken, etc Which would you want for your Sigil? Which is the least appealing? Which would you like to see come to life in the book? I hope this mean more of the sigils will come to life in the book. I want to see kraken and unicorns.
Don't think I'd want a flayed man. Golden roses are pretty, but falcons have grace and strength - a nice combination.

5. Okay not that I've taken a slight road trip I'll get back on track. Ayra has been surviving on the streets around the castle. Do you think Yoren from the wall will harm her? He seemed a little rough with her.
He told her she was a boy, to keep her mouth shut and that he was taking her to the wall. I think he is her way out of the city. If he wanted her harm, he would hand her over to Joffrey.

6. Anyone else think they'd find something on Jon's parentage in the family crypts? Were we totally wrong?
Just repeated the story about Lianna getting carried off and a war getting started over it. I was surprised that Rikkon had the same dream as his brother.

7. Osha looks like she may play a more key role than I previously would have thought. Anyone else surprised?
Looks like she will be a good source of information about the world north of the wall.

Prologue - Chapter 3 (Danenerys)

1. Many fantasy stories have a "medieval" feel. They incorporate elements that seem or are very fitting to the medieval time period. Why do you think authors do this?

My introduction to fantasy novels was by Lloyd Alexander and J.R.R. Tolkien. Those books incorporated medieval elements. Perhaps authors do this to remove the traces of modern life and take the reader away to a far away place of the imagination.

2. Tolkien was asked many times how WWII affected his writing of The Lord of the Rings. Was it allegorical? Tolkien always insisted that it wasn't. That being said, does Martin "mean" anything by setting the North vs. the South? Those things obviously "mean" something to us- the Civil War, North and South Korea, Vikings, etc.

This is a good question and something I hadn't thought of before. In this novel, we have the added complication of "beyond the wall" and the lands to the east, which are more "magical." I am not sure Martin meant something by the dichotomy, but the initial war of Starks vs. Lannisters fits the mold.

3. For some reason, many epics start with an execution (or perhaps a death/murder). What is the author's purpose in doing that?

I felt this set the tone for Ned Stark's character. He is a fair and just leader; he does what is necessary. This scene also foreshadows so much. Makes me shudder to think of it!

4. Does the direwolf, and her pups, appearance foreshadow anything? What do you make of the pups numbering the exact amount of Stark children?
This went completely over my head the first time I read GoT. The Stark pups sort of mirror the Stark children. Their fates are intertwined.

5. The orphan is a powerful literary symbol. Especially historically where one's birth determined career, marriage, etc. Orphans are free to, sort of, create their own destiny. What, if anything, will Dany (Daenerys) choose to do to break with her "destiny"?

Chapter 4 (Eddard) - Chapter 7 (Arya)

The fact the antler was the means of death suggests the King, whose symbol is an antler, must somehow cause the death of Eddard (aka Ned) leaving his children orphans. The question is should this be seen as a warning as to what could happen or a prophecy of what is to come? What do you think? Knowing what could happen can the outcome be changed?

I think the outcome could have been changed, but not if GRRM didn't want it to.

2. Knowing how close the King and Ned were do you think Catelyn was right to encourage her husband to become the King's Hand?

I think Catelyn had good motives for wanting Ned to be the Hand. She felt he would bring a clear head to the king's council, which would ultimately benefit the realm. Since "winter is coming," they need all the help they can get.

3. Do you think Jon Snow's jealousy of his siblings tureborn siblings will cause trouble in the future?


I didn't get the impression that Jon was jealous of them. He and Robb are really good friends, and he's very close to Arya. Rickon and Bran care about him too. Perhaps Sansa is the only Stark child to treat Jon like a bastard. Jon has a troubled relationship with Theon, but Theon is Ned's ward, not his son.

4. Were you surprised that Catelyn would ask that Jon either go with her husband or become one of the brother's of the Night's Watch?

No, Catelyn is an evil bitch when it comes to Jon Snow. She can't get over a transgression that occurred 15 years ago.

5. Wall are usually put up for a reason. Any ideas as to why the Wall was put up thousands of years ago? Do you suspect it had something to do with the Others? What do you the the Others are?

Upon first reading this, I thought the Wall was put up to protect Westeros from whatever evil forces existed north of the Wall.

6. What do you think of Tyrion's advice to Jon? "Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you."

I think this is great advice. Tyrion has been treated badly by many, especially his own father. If anyone can give advice to Jon Snow, it's Tyrion.

7. What character(s) do you find the most interesting so far?

I think Tyrion and Dany are most interesting.

8. Thoughts on why the Lannisters would want to get rid of Jon Arryn and then foster his son?

They would have power over the East, via the son. (But, did the Lannisters WANT to foster young Robert, or was that King Robert's idea?)

9. Sounds like Rhaegor did something to Ned's sister. Any thoughts on what that was?

When I first read this, I thought Rhaegar had raped Lyanna, or at least treated her very badly. (hide spoiler)]

1) Before you found out what happened, were you apprehensive about Bran climbing all over Winterfall, especially when you discovered he was crawling the outer walls fraught with loose mortar? Did his direwolf cub’s growl cause you to have a sense of impending doom?

I remember seeing this on the TV series before I read the book. While watching the TV show, when Catelyn told Bran not to climb any more, I had a very bad feeling.

2) Did it take you long to figure out who the man and woman were whom Bran overheard? Did you surmise both their identities at the same time, or just one?
Saw it on TV. Eeeew.

3) We learn from their dialogue that these two wished the King ill; did you think eavesdropping was an effective way to learn this? “That frighten cow shared Jon Arryn’s bed.” What do you deduce from this statement?

I suppose eavesdropping was the only way to learn this, since we don't have Jaime or Cersei's point of view in this book. I thought the cow was a refernece to Lysa.

4) Since Bran is a POV character in this story, it would be surprising if he died so early in the story; therefore, what condition do you think he will be in after the push? (Any comments about the push?)

The push was shocking, but in hindsight it sets the tone for GRRM's story. I've come to expect that no character is sacred, and that anyone can die.

5) Were you surprised Tyrion slapped Prince Joffrey not once, but twice? What do you think his reasons were for emphatically insisting Prince Joffrey put aside his contemptuous attitude and seek out Lord and Lady Stark?

This is one of the best scenes in the book/TV show! WE don't know a whole lot about Joffrey at this point, but the fact that Tyrion slaps him says that he doesn't respect him. We know that Tyrion is a wise character, so perhaps we shouldn't respect him either.
Tyrion's reason is that Joffrey should show common courtesy as the heir to the throne, and as a guest in Winterfell.

6) How much do you think Tyrion knows about the secrets of Queen Cersei and her twin, Ser Jaime, the Kingslayer?

I suspect he knows everything.

7) How did you feel about Jon Snow defying Catelyn in order to say good-bye to Bran? Why do you think she told him about her prayers? GOOD FOR HIM!! I think her telling him about her prayers is quite a departure from her usual treatment of Jon Snow. She's essentially telling him that she believes it's her fault that Bran is lying there unconscious and maimed.

8) Forget Viserus’ brooding boorishness at the wedding; to me, Magister Illyrio seems overly invested in Daenerys’ behavior. Are his reasons of a pedantic, prurient, or purely solicitous nature?


Magister Illyrio hopes to reap the benefits of the Targaryens returning to the throne.

9) Are the three dragon eggs gifted to Dany by Magister Illyrio still viable? If so, does he know this? Are his actions and gift-giving consistent with his moral nature and personality?

If I had to guess at the beginning, I would say they weren't viable. Knowing what I know now, I am not sure if Illyrio knew what would happen with the eggs. My guess is he thought they were a thoughtful gift for a girl who was descended from Dragon kings.

10) Looks like Khal Drago can only communicate to Daenerys with one word, but he uses it effectively, no? Comments.

This was disturbing because she's so young. It was hard to imagine this tiny 13-year-old girl being taken by a huge Dothraki warrior.

1. We've had a lot of speculation about Jon's parentage. Robert was with Ned the year he was away and mentions Wylla - Jon's mother. What do you think of this new development? If Wylla is Jon's mother then who was Ashara to Ned? Could it be that he had more than one affair?

There are many possibilities mentioned for Jon's mama. I think it's definitely possible that Ned had more than one affair, however I have an entirely different theory of Jon's parentage.


2. We finally find out that Rhaegar did rape Lyanna. Does this change anything for you?


I don't believe we find this out for sure. I think this is merely speculation.

3. Ned advises Robert that "no one man should hold both the East and West". Do you think this could be foreshadowing something? Or is it just advice?


This is great advice on Ned's part, but I don't think it's exactly foreshadowing. hasn't Jaime been named Warden of the East, and his father Tywin is Warden of the West? So, essentially, the Lannisters have LOT of power.

4. Does it surprise you to find out how Jaime Lannister got his nickname of Kingslayer? Also, what about Ned finding Jaime sitting on the Iron Throne?

It's hard to talk about this, since Jaime Lannister is one of my favorite characters now.

5. What do you think about the young boys called "Rapers" being taken to the Wall? Does it shock you?


Not exactly shocking. I would think it a great punishment to endure what the Black Brothers do.

6. Does this sentence say anything important about the Lannisters? "The Lannisters took what was offered" (120). Think about it in reference to what Ned said about Jaime sitting on the throne. Does it change anything about Jaime Lannister?


I think if Jaime wanted the throne, he would have taken it. After all, he would have had the backing of his father, Tywin, who is very rich, powerful and influential.

7. What do you think of the bond between Jon and Tyrion? I'm glad Jon has a friend of sorts. I have a soft spot for him!

8. Who do you think the man was, who was sent to Bran's room? Who do you think sent him? Why?

Whoever sent him is someone who doesn't want him to spill the beans about Jaime and Cersei. One of those two, in my mind, is the obvious source of the assassin's orders.

9. Many have shown dislike for Theon Grayjoy, how do you feel about him being allowed to hear what Catelyn has to say about the Lannisters?

I think when someone is taken as Ward, they are treated like a trusted member of the family. So this isn't surprising to me.

10. Even after 15 years Catelyn does not consider herself to be a Stark. She tells Robb to stay at Winterfell because "there must always be a Stark at Winterfell" (137). Why do you think Catelyn chooses to exclude herself from being a Stark?

Maybe there needs to be a male Stark?

11. Is it significant that the "wilder" children look like Starks and the "tamer" children look like Tullys? Why? I hadn't thought of this, but it's a good point!

I don't think Varys has powers, but he does have a lot of sources.

Which Lannisters? Tyrion? I think Tyrion went to the Wall just to say he'd been there.

Yes, it was surprising and I think the number may actually be larger.

2. Based on the chapters so far, what is your opinion of Robert? Were you able to get a handle on him?

I think Robert wants to be King, but he wants everyone else to do the work. When he has to make a kingly decision, he acts annoyed.

3. Do you think the Starks were wise in trusting Littlefinger? Does Littlefinger still think of Catelyn favorably?

I get the impression Littlefinger still loves Catelyn and resents that she had to marry a Stark. I don't believe he is trustworthy.

4. Do you think that the North and the Wall with its beyond is being taken too lightly? Due to the long summer, have people forgotten about it? What do you think of Mormont's request?
Yes, I do think it's being taken lightly. No one seems to really fear what's out there, except the Night's Watch.

5. Tyrion's leaving the watch. Have you any idea/theory behind Tyrion's journey? Is it to analyze the strength/weakness of the Night watch if in case of war?
I thought it was a bucket list item for him and didn't feel there was an ulterior motive.

6. Jon seems to have heeded Tyrion's and Donal Noye's advice. And after Bran's news, he seems to have matured a bit. We also learn that Ben is also missing. And Jon's statement also seems to be some kind of omen. Has anything happened to Ben? Will Jon have to go after him?

7. Ned's advice to Arya is full of wisdom. Arya seems to understand that but what about Sansa? Will Arya and Sansa ever reconcile?

Arya and Sansa are very different and have different interests and goals in life. I would hope they would try to be friends since they are sisters, but they are so far apart in their opinions it seems impossible.

8. I was surprised when Ned had Arya taught "dancing" lessons. Were you surprised? Looks like this will shape Arya and Sansa's future. Agree or Disagree?
I think this will be very useful for Arya.

9. Oh Boy, I knew Dany would be ass-kicker if only given the chance. And Vicious had got what was coming to him. What do you think of that incident? Do you think that Dany will have a greater role as time goes on? Especially given the last scene in the chapter where Dany takes command?

That maybe she just took him like Rumplestilskin wanted the princess' baby. Dang!
Dany was so quick to accept the terms without understanding them and Mirri never actually lied to her. Still not fair.

2) What did you think of the dragons suckling off Dany and her being unscathed by the fire? Why do you think her brother wasn't immune to the fire?
He was too weak to be a true dragon. Looks like Dany is destined to be the mother of dragons. A bit weird though.

3) They want Robb to be king. Did you see that one coming? I still mourn for Eddard. *sniff* I still like Jon more than Robb.
Eddard's death was a shock and I really liked him. I didn't see this coming but it makes sense.

4) There appears to be no going back for Jon. He either stays at the wall or he dies. Anyone else disliking that? The way the Old Bear talked I thought there were times when they could leave.The only time they could leave was before they took the vow.

5) Out of curiosity, those of you of the *cough* "weaker" *cough* sex like me, would you have sided with the peace that Catelyn proposed or are you of the "off with their heads" crew? Okay, I'm somewhere in between.
I prefer peace, but not giving in to the bully. I think the king in the north is a good option.

6) Tyrion finally is acknowledged by his father as his son. Jamie is being talked poorly of. The Lannister family secret (all of Cersei's children being Jamie's) has still yet to be revealed. Were any of these things surprising? How do you think Tyrion will act. What do you think of his thought of taking his whore (why do I always feel bad using that word?) with him? Do we know how old he is? I kept thinking it would be ironic if the "whore" turned out to be that long lost wife of his, but I don't think that would be possible. I'm guessing that happened a very long time ago and he'd recognize her.
He just craves a regular female companion, and has never met a woman who has fallen in love with him, so pays for companionship instead.

7) Thoughts overall on the book? Will you continue with the next book? Anyone up for reading it soon? Any thoughts as to whether we should read the series (as it won as our next series read) like this buddy read - 4 chapters at a time?
Enjoyed this book, I've read it before so this time I listened. Started the second book ages ago but never s=finished. Plan to do the whole series this time, but might need to space them out a bit so i don't get sick of it. they are long books.

8) A last minute add - Why have we not met Lord Stannis? I kept thinking we'd get to at least meet him in this book. He doesn't seem like he'd be that great of a King.

Well, there is no love, is there? Not that I have managed to find anyway, no matter how hard I try. I feel sorry for Tyrion, not having his father's love or approvement in anything.

3. Anyone wondering how Tyrion's newly formed motley crew will effect the games (game of thrones that is), or do you think Tyrion's father will kill them? Could insisting that Tyrion was theirs until they were compensated lead to their downfall?

I honestly have no idea where to place them in all of this at the moment. But I don't think Tyrion's father is so happy about having them around.

4. Bronn saved Tyrion's butt, but it sounded like Tyrion didn't have a high regard for him. He brought up the fact he'd changed sides. Anyone surprised by this?

Nope, not surprised after everything that's happened in the story so far.

5. Sansa. What can I say? Anyone else like to smack some sense into her? Anyone else surprised she is still considered engaged to the young King? Do you think he likes her? I was a little confused by it until I read Eddard's chapter.

I do want to smack some sense into her - a whole lot of it since she lacks so much. I don't think he likes her, and I don't believe he wants to marry her but try to find a way to avoid that marriage. With the help of her mother, in that case of course.

6. I must confess, I was a little afraid to read chapter 58. I didn't see any other Eddard chapters. I feared our relationship with him had come to an end. Anyone else relieved it wasn't? Do you think he'll cave in because of Sansa?

He loves his children so much, so I believe maybe he will cave in for her sake. But still, honor means so much to him. Either way, they'll destroy a part of him making him choose.

7. So as I and I believe a few others of you suspected, Catelyn didn't fully believe herself a Stark. I'd think that after 5 children and several more years of being married to her husband she'd have felt she was a Stark. Anyone else think she really had a problem with her husband's infidelity? Could that be the reason?

I don't know what the reason really was. Ned's infidelity could be a part of it. But it could also be that she has so strong bonds to her blood-family that it was very difficult for her to see herself a member of another family.

8. What did you think of the agreement Catelyn reached with Lord Frey? That was an awful lot to ask for passage.

That was an awful lot, yes. But she was desperate to get passage, and he was desperate to get rid of some grandchildren. Fair enough. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 60 - 63

2) Something more than WOW! for the end of Chapter 60? Was it the biggest surprise of the story for you? If not, state your biggest surprise thus far.

That was one big surprise!

3) Let us say, for the purpose of this question, our suspicions about Jon Snow being the love child of Rhaegar and Lyanna are correct (of course, if they married, then he’s a Prince, right?). Question: Having read the Old Bear’s reveal, what do you make of him gifting Jon with Longclaw?

I always hoped for him to have a great destiny.

4) Daenerys has no stomach for rape or slavery. When Ser Jorah tells Dany she is like her oldest brother, Rhaegar, we get a completely different picture of him. Comments on either of these statements?

I found that interesting. Not like the picture I've got of Rhaegar this far.

5) First impressions on Mirri Maz Duur? Do you think there will be consequences to their burning the temple?

I liked her.

6) What do you think of Lord Tywin placing Tyrion and his wild “motley crew” in the vanguard? Do you believe Tyrion knows exactly what his father is doing? Do you think that there are limits on what a person can forgive?

There's definitely a limit on what a person can forgive. As for the going-ons during the battle... I don't think either of them knows exactly where the other stands.

7) Was Tyrion’s defeat of the knight intelligence or luck? Were these battle scenes either too long or too graphic for you or were you too caught up in the telling to notice?

I would say it was a combination of intelligence and luck - as is so often the case for him.

8) Were you impressed that Lord Robb Stark was more cautious than Lord Tywin expected?

Yes, I'm impressed with Robb. He's going to become a great leader if he survives.

9) What are the Starks going to do with Jaime? Surely not let this Lannister brother go as easily as the first.

I hope they guard him well, and don't let him come to harm. He can be very useful to them.

10) Any change from your initial impression of Theon Greyjoy? Quote: “And Lord Tywin?” Catelyn interrupted. “Have you perchance taken Lord Tywin, Theon?” Catelyn asks an eloquent question of him. How is his arrogance different from Jamie’s?

I still don't feel or think so much about him, to be honest. But he is one of those characters that stay a bit in the background, but give them a chance and they could cause so much trouble. I hope this one doesn't... (hide spoiler)]

Dany is my favorite character and every challenge makes her stronger, which I love! Having said that, I believe that Dany kind of understood what she was getting herself into, but was hoping for the best. The conversation with Mirri was vague but full with implications. It does say "Dany trembled with relief" and she did not ask Mirri whose life. So, I kind of expected that as well.



2) What did you think of the dragons suckling off Dany and her being unscathed by the fire? Why do you think her brother wasn't immune to the fire?

That final chapter was simply impressive. I was in awe! These are the dragons that existed in the frozen eggs for years. I think the suckling shows that the dragons needed her to be born. She is the reason why they are alive, and it establishes the close connection between Dany and the dragons. As for Viserys, he simply did not believe in the power of the dragons.


3) They want Robb to be king. Did you see that one coming? I still mourn for Eddard. *sniff* I still like Jon more than Robb.

I did not expect his followers to name Robb King in the North. But I'm happy they did.


4) There appears to be no going back for Jon. He either stays at the wall or he dies. Anyone else disliking that?

I actually like it when a character must choose between two paths.


5) Out of curiosity, those of you of the *cough* "weaker" *cough* sex like me, would you have sided with the peace that Catelyn proposed or are you of the "off with their heads" crew? Okay, I'm somewhere in between.

I would have opted for peace, but with terms that favored the Starks more.


6) Tyrion finally is acknowledged by his father as his son. Jamie is being talked poorly of. The Lannister family secret (all of Cersei's children being Jamie's) has still yet to be revealed. Were any of these things surprising? How do you think Tyrion will act. What do you think of his thought of taking his whore (why do I always feel bad using that word?) with him? Do we know how old he is? I kept thinking it would be ironic if the "whore" turned out to be that long lost wife of his, but I don't think that would be possible. I'm guessing that happened a very long time ago and he'd recognize her.

I liked the fact that Tyrion defied his father and is actually taking Shai to Kings Landing. Tywin acknowledging Tyrion came, unfortunately, at the expense of Jaime's downfall and Cersei's inability to control her son. Tyrion's reaction to Tywin brushing Jaime aside is heart warming.

I would definitely read the entire series. I already bought and it's sitting on my night table. I will probably be starting the 2nd one in January.

I'd love to have a unicorn or a wolf as my sigil! Mythical and strong.

I hope he doesn't harm her. I mean, why else would he keep calling her 'boy' and make her shut up every time she was about to reveal herself? I think he's going to save her.

I was so sad when I read this part! I like Dany and kept hoping she would have her baby. This was so unfair!

As a new dog owner, I have to pick the wolves, but dragons would be a close second. I had the same thought – I so want the unicorns come to life! Which leads the natural question, who would win, unicorns or direwolves?

That would be an amazing twist, but I think this whore is young, and his wife was too long ago. I think Tyrion will not be overly taken with his father’s new praise in light of Jaime’s loss. He seems too smart to suddenly trust this family. Also, I think he genuinely appreciates Jaime and Jaime’s defense of him over the years.

I was really caught up in the story, it was too bad Bran got called away. I think there are still children of the haunted forest and I don’t think this story has a happy end it was a ghost story after all.

2) Why do you think Tyrion designed the saddle for Bran? Does his doing so assure you that he had nothing to do with the attempted assignation on Bran?
I think he did that because he wanted to help him and because Jon asked him to. I don’t think he had anything to do with the assassination attempt. I think Tyrion is a really good guy behind his façade of bad behavior.

3) Why did the direwolves respond to Tyrion with such hostility? Summer was the first to start growling; what is the significance of that? Did this change your mind about Tyrion’s ulterior motives?
I don’t know, maybe just because he is different it didn’t change my mind about Tyrion.

4) Any doubt as to which Robert was Jon Arryn was asking for on his death bed? Do you think he was poisoned, and if so, by whom? If it was by Queen Cersei, why did she leave the castle instead of assuring the deed was done and/or no information passed from Lord Arryn to the King Robert?
No doubt for me. I definitely think Jon Arryn was poisened, by whom I don’t know, but the Lannisters seem to play a significant role. She left so the blame couldn’t be placed on her or her brothers.

5) What did you make of Sansa & Arya’s dreams of Bran?

6) What was your first impression of Samwell Tarly; did it change any after hearing his life story? Did you agree with Jon’s thought that “it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice”? What was the meaning of Jon’s dream of Winterfall?
Soft, not really. I agree with Jon, I don’t think Sam is a coward.

7) Were you surprised Jon had Ghost partaken in straightening Rast out by leaping onto his chest? “Remember, we know where you sleep.” Impressed he used that variation on Donal Noye's words of advice? How close a bond has been formed between all these youths of the Night’s Guard?
I wasn’t surprised, the relationship between Jon and Ghost is very strong and they do a lot together. I think between a few of them the bond is strong, but bonds formed through threats can’t be very strong.

8) What will be the consequences of Lord Stark giving up some of his own household guard to serve the Watch?
He has to watch his back more now. I don’t think it was a smart thing to do.

9) Who holds a vital piece of the puzzle for Lord Stark: Ser Hugh (formally Lord Arryn’s squire) or Lord Stannis (the king’s brother)? Who is more likely to part with this information?
They both do I think, but I don’t know if they will part with their information, they both seem loyal to the king not the hand.

10) What is the significance of the lineage book Lord Arryn was reading?
Don’t know yet, maybe it has something to do with the king’s basterd children and their mothers.

11) I can’t write better questions than what we ended with: “What had Jon Arryn wanted with a king’s bastard, and why was it worth his life?” Well, except to ask, which king’s bastard? (I mean which king, Robert?)
I think Robert’s, and maybe Jon Arryn thought it might be another heir to the throne, because maybe Joffry isn’t the king’s biological son.

I don’t believe him about betting against his own family, he only seems to look out for himself and I don’t think he respects his brother and sister. My opinion of him remains the same and I believe he didn’t have anything to do with the assassination attempt on Bran.

I don’t think it’s possible to think even less of Littlefinger, I don’t like him.

Littlefinger is a creep.

I didn’t think Joffrey would have escorted Sansa, her opinion probably stays the same.

I think she‘s more of a “stage mother”, anything for the kid to be a king.

Yes

8. What did you think of The Hound's story about Ser Gregor?
I think it was a true story and he told it to her to frighten her.

He definitely is in more trouble than anticipated.

Someone is definitely trying to kill the king. I’m not sure they are trying to poison him, they are trying to get him drunk enough so he will do something that gets him killed and that will make it look like an accident.

I also think on is the hound, but the other may be Varys or Littlefinger. The queen’s father is still alive, but I thought he remains in his castle.

Yes, he needs to get out sooner rather than later.

2. I agree that Lysa is a bad influence on her son and he should be fostered. She seems slightly unbalanced. Anyone agree or disagree? She seems consumed by hate. I'm suspecting something more happened than just her husband being poisoned. Any ideas?
I think she is more than slightly unbalanced, she is a lot unbalanced. I’m not sure it’s hate she is feeling it’s more resentment disguised as hate. I think it may be all the loss she has suffered, the loss of her children. And maybe she envies Catelyn for her situation in life.

3. Loved that Jon tried to convince them to use Sam in another capacity and stop the torture of his training. Do you think they'll take his advice? I kept hoping he'd go home.
I think they will listen to Jon’s advice. Sam can be of more use to them Jon’s way, than when they keep training him to fight, which he probably will not survive.

4. Tyrion's story of his first wife was shocking and sad. Do you think she really was a whore or do you think they would do that to her because she was undesirable for a wife of a Lannister? I kept struggling between the two scenarios. I'm guessing she was hired.
I think she was hired by Jamie as part of a very elaborate joke.

5. Tyrion is as smart as a whip. Did you think he'd be able to talk his way out of being enslaved? I guess he knows what drives people, but you also have to have some finesse in order to accomplish a change in thought.
I think he makes use of the fact that people always underestimate him and I think he has great insight into what drives people, he has always been able to observe them.

6. I guess a medieval type tale isn't complete unless the villagers are pillaged? What do you think about all the chaos associate with the Lannisters? Do you believe it is the dastardly deeds of Jamie and his Motley crew?

He is a creep, but he also makes sensible comments sometimes. Mainly he’s a creep though.

I don’t think she will make a good queen, yet. She is arrogant and feels entitled. Her dreaming of Lady shows there is still a little girl somewhere inside of her and she misses Lady.

3) Interesting that Sansa brought clarity to Lord Stark by seeing Prince Joffrey by his true sigil. Still, now that her direwolf is dead, do you see her as more than just an observer? Or just someone unprotected?
I think someone unprotected.

4) Where you surprised Lord Stark desired to confront Queen Cersei with her sins b/f speaking with King Robert? What of his choice of location; did that have any impact on her speaking the truth? It didn’t seem to affect her propositioning him. Comments.
I think the location has more to do with Lord Stark’s beliefs than with forcing Queen Cersei to tell the truth. I don’t think she cares that he will tell the King that Joffry is not his son or her relationship with Jamie.

5) Did the horse heart eating gross you out as much as it did me (which was a lot!)? Were you ever in doubt of her keeping it down? Does the dosh khaleen’s prophesy reassure you of the safety of Dany’s baby? Were you surprise that Dany and Drogo made love in front of witnesses? Does this make her more Dothraki?
The eating of the heart really grossed me out, I didn’t doubt she would keep it down I think she is a very strong person. I don’t know if the prophesy reassures me of the baby’s safety. I don’t think the ritual makes her more Dothraki, the whole trip after her wedding made her Dothraki and I admire that she made the rituals of the Dothraki her own.

6) Were you worried about Dany and her baby when Viserys threatened her with his sword? Were you surprised with his "crown of gold"?
No I wasn’t worried. I was a bit surprised with his “crown of gold”, but what he deserved.

7) Oh, man! I thought when Lyanna was saying “Promise me, Ned,” in his dream we were finally going to get a few answers or clues as to Jon Snow’s paternity. Where are you on this speculation?
Nowhere yet.

8) What were your observations and conclusions about King Robert's fight with the boar?
I think he was setup, someone used his love of wine and his arrogance to have him “accidentally” meet his end.

9) Do you think Ned should have told Robert about the parentage of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen? Do you think his decision a wise one?
No, I don’t think he should have told him, it wouldn’t have helped anyway only made Robert’s death more horrible and I think Robert in a way already suspects.

I’m not sure.

1) Did you expect Jon to keep his role in Samwell’s assignment a secret?
Yes, I think he wants to keep it from him that he helped him, because he thinks Sam isn’t strong enough to make it.

2) Do you think Samwell’s taking his vows with Jon before the heart tree will strengthen their friendship?
I don’t know, I think Sam is searching for something else and a connection to Jon.

3) If the the reason behind Mormont assigning him to the stewards was as Samwell stated, why was Ser Alliser smiling?
Because Ser Alliser doesn’t know the real reason and he thinks less of the stewards.

4) Do you feel Lord Stark should have said something about Prince Joffrey’s paternity when he called the small council together?
No, they already know I’m sure.

5) Ohhhhh…Litterfinger is truly a viperous snake! Did this surprise you? What are your thoughts about Janos Slynt? Will there be repercussions for Ser Barristan, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, for his slight hesitation?
No nothing surprised me, maybe Ser Barristan will be exiled. Everything that happened showed that Eddard Stark is to trusting of the people around him.

6) Did Arya learn enough from Syrio to survive and make it back to Winterfell? Will she be reunited with her direwolf on the way home?
I hope so, but I think Arya has a very long road ahead of her. I hope her wolf will find her.

7) Sansa! Will she ever get a clue? Can you see her parroting reflected in what other courtiers say in from of Queen Cersei? Where you as appalled as I was that she had revealed their planned departure to Queen Cersei?
Poor girl, she is an airhead. Also she is easily deceived. I wasn’t appalled, I was expecting it, she would do anything to stay near Joffry, and she thinks only of herself and doesn’t know anything that is going on.

Yeah I did too, when they talked about taking them with them I kept saying leave them LEAVE THEM. But did they listen?????

2. What did you think the hand going down the throat was looking for - soul or heart? CREEPY!
Heart.

4. Did they say if anyone besides Jon survived? There was another zombie that he didn't deal with. Wonder what happened to him...but do I really want to know???????
No and I want to continue with this story line!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. Was anyone surprised that so much time had passed? I didn't think it'd been a full year.
Has it really been a year, wow things do move fast.

4. Anyone else thinking Catelyn is a bad mom? Why is she not going home to her two youngest kids? I understand her brother's in trouble and her father is dying, but she has kids. I can't fathom being away from my kids that long.
Yes she needs to see her kids especially Rickon he’s only 4 years old and Bran is left to rule the castle he can’t be left alone for too long.

5. Interesting that Rob's first reaction to Sansa's letter was "What's wrong with that girl." and not "They must have forced her to write this." What do you think?
I’m not surprised by his reaction, it does seem like her to write a letter like that and he doesn’t know queen Cersei.

6. Bran's statement about Sansa loosing her Wolf makes me wonder how close those wolves are tied to the children. Seems like there could be another story just about that.
I think the wolves have a very strong tie to the kids as well as the family. It sort of seems like their characters are linked.

7. Speaking of Bran, I feel so bad he can't be healed. I kept hoping he could. He's struggling so much with what he can do and what he would have been able to do. Any thoughts?
I still think he may heal, I will keep waiting for that miracle to happen. I do admire him for what he has accomplished so far and that he’s not staying in his room hiding for everything.

8. Looks like raising the banners was a good choice on Robb's part. I still don't like him going to war.
I don’t like it either.

9. So there is a dilemma is getting the father more important than trying to defeat the Others. Which do you think they should have done first?

10. Dany and her husband were almost poisoned. Did you think it odd that Ser Jorah thought the wine was tainted? Could he have set it up to persuade Kahl Drago to wage war on the Seven Kingdoms?
No I think Ser Jorah is in contact with Varys, he seems to know a lot of what is going on in the kingdom.

11. Do you think that Dany and the Starks might become allies?
No I don’t think so too much has happened.

1. We now know that the mantra of the Lannisters is "Hear Me Roar." What is your opinion of it? I think it is not all that inventive or great.
Well it fits with their sign the lion.

2. Tyrion is finally back home. What did you think of the interaction between him and his father? I'm not feeling the love.
I don’t feel the love either, I wonder why he went to his father instead of going to Jamie.

3. Anyone wondering how Tyrion's newly formed motley crew will effect the games (game of thrones that is), or do you think Tyrion's father will kill them? Could insisting that Tyrion was theirs until they were compensated lead to their downfall?
His father will use them then kill them.

4. Bronn saved Tyrion's butt, but it sounded like Tyrion didn't have a high regard for him. He brought up the fact he'd changed sides. Anyone surprised by this?
No, and Tyrion will use whatever and whoever crosses his path.

5. Sansa. What can I say? Anyone else like to smack some sense into her? Anyone else surprised she is still considered engaged to the young King? Do you think he likes her? I was a little confused by it until I read Eddard's chapter.
She remains “engaged” to the king as long as she is useful that way, they will never let her marry him. I don’t think he likes her, he likes torturing her.

6. I must confess, I was a little afraid to read chapter 58. I didn't see any other Eddard chapters. I feared our relationship with him had come to an end. Anyone else relieved it wasn't? Do you think he'll cave in because of Sansa?
I think his character will come to an end very soon and I’m dreading it. I like his character.

7. So as I and I believe a few others of you suspected, Catelyn didn't fully believe herself a Stark. I'd think that after 5 children and several more years of being married to her husband she'd have felt she was a Stark. Anyone else think she really had a problem with her husband's infidelity? Could that be the reason?
I don’t know, I think she’s after fame and glory for herself.

8. What did you think of the agreement Catelyn reached with Lord Frey? That was an awful lot to ask for passage.
They did get passed though and she has bought her children’s lives that way.

Synopsis

I've just started this for the first time and I'm about 50 pages in. I would like to do a buddy read, but it kinda depends on how fast yall read. I'm starting a new semester at grad school, so I don't know that I'll have time to read 50 pages a day, etc. What are your plans for a buddy read?

I'll have to juggle it with some other books, so I'm okay if we do smaller sections.

I'm interested in joining as well. I was in the original buddy read, but I slacked off and I didn't keep up. I'll have to juggle this with other reads/grad school also, so I'm ok with small sections. I've already started it for the second time, but I'm not sure how far I am into it. It's the e-book collection of all 5 books.

You are brave, Sarah. I get so overwhelmed by the ebook multipacks when the percentage never seems to change. :-)

I agree! It is overwhelming to feel like you're spending so much time on it and barely making a dent. It doesn't help that these books are pretty massive on their own.

So peeking at the page/chapter breakdowns, it looks like it's fairly consistent with every 3 chapters being about 30 pages or so. Is that doable? 3 chapters a day?

That seems do-able to me. The only days I might have trouble with that are Wednesdays. That's when all of my school responsibilities are. Are we going to do questions like the last buddy read? Or will it be more loose than that?

That sounds ok. By that count, I'm almost done with the "4th day." I've never done a buddy read. Does that mean we answer questions every day or every 3 days, etc.?

I'll have to double check how far I'm into it. The questions would be for each section (at least that's how it was done before), I am ok with or without the questions, I'll leave it up to you guys. I, too, am ready to start this week if everyone else is.

So I just checked where I am in the book and I'm at Chapter 27, 9 days in. I'm way further than I thought I'd be. LOL. It's so deceiving when they're all together. There is still quite a bit to go though.

Sorry all! I didn't get my notifications for this thread. I'm fine with either answering questions or just posting a few thoughts when we have them. The question breakdown from the last buddy read looks like they were doing 4 chapters a day. So if we want to answer those questions it may be easier to do them in chunks after 12 chapters.

We also don't all have to do the same thing. Whatever works best for you and your interest/schedule! It's a long book - we're going to be here a while. :)
