I'd like to nominate The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. It's a trilogy, starting with The Summer Tree, and it is his early work. I read them and loved them when I was a teenager, and I'd really like to re-read them as an adult.

ok-so far we have 12 books nominated and seconded---still a few that do not have seconds.
I will give it a few more days and start the poll

Alison wrote: "I second Furies of Calderon, but I also nominate Shadows in the Sand."This doesn't seem very easy to get hold of, how much of the series is published?
I'd like to nominate the Magister Trilogy by C S Friedman. The books are:Feast of Souls
Wings of Wrath
Legacy of Kings
Valleygirl wrote: "The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. I enjoyed the first one, but haven't read more yet. His Majesty's Dragon"has anyy seconded Temeraire? If not, I will
ok-we have quite a few good books here! I Loved, Loved Loved Rai-Kirah!
ok-the following books do not have a second:
Acacia: The War with the Mein
The Red Wolf Conspiracy
The Magicians' Guild
Empire in Black and Gold
It looks like Shadows in the Sand only has the first book out, so this is not a series as of yet.
I will leave this up until the end of the day and then make a poll (If I missed anything-speak up now!)

I'll nominate the Peen series as it seems to be missing a nomination. I've read them many times and love them. I'll second The Riftwar series.
Just something to consider when voting...
Sometimes it is nice to read a series that is finished, rather than get through 2 or 4 or more books and still have the remaining books that only exist in the author's head or computer memory.

Ok, so browsing the previous topics, it looks like Riftwar (and Empire series) was already discussed in 2011. Maybe people won't want to repeat? Or maybe there are enough new members that it doesn't matter??
We should not be repeating series we've already read as a group. If you are currently reading one of those series(or plan to read one), you are always welcome to post your comments to the old discussion threads and bring new life to them. Please only nominate series that are completely published (or will be completed by the time we read the last book) and widely/easily available across the globe.
Thanks, Jon
I don't want to be picky about the "series" terminology. But does a trilogy count as a group read here as well?
Andreas wrote: "I don't want to be picky about the "series" terminology. But does a trilogy count as a group read here as well?"You know, I asked that at the beginning of this thread and never got an answer. There were lots of trilogies nominated and seconded, so I guess that the answer is yes?
According to the description of this group: " Congratulations! You've found a support group of avid readers to enable you to find the next great trilogy, quadrology, or ten volume series to sate your addiction to fantasy."

Yes, a trilogy counts as a series.
Femmy wrote: "According to the description of this group: " Congratulations! I thought I'd put that definition somewhere in the group description a long long time ago in a world far far away. :)

Are we having two series starting in November? Just curious if both current ones are finishing. Mumbles and I'll have finished WOT.
ok-so here is the latest issue:
After posting the poll, I realized that Gentleman Bastards series is unfinshed. It isnt even half finished.
Now we have learned the hard way here that doing unfinished series doesnt work: people will just read one or two and drop out, because they dont want to be reading along and then have to stop. and wait for years.(or in GRR Martins case, decades)
Frankly, I probably would have disqualified it if I realized this earlier. I guess I thought the new one coming out was the final book. But it isnt.
Part of me thinks that if the voters dont care, I shouldnt. But like I said before we learned the hard way that unfinished series dont end up being successfaul reads. So a big part of me thinks I should start the poll over and eliminate it.
anyway, chime in and let me know what you think! I will decide tomorrow.

I would be in favor of restarting the poll, if just to give people a chance to cast their votes somewhere else.
.....reading a series that is half finished is a big mistake, It just increses frustration imo (look what GRRM is doing to us).....so I say redo too.....

ok everyone-we have some winners! Codex Alera starting with Furies of Calderon and Broken Empire starting with Prince of Thorns!
So-does anyone want to volunteer to help moderate????? I am not planning to read either of these....lol

Nor do I plan to read these. I made it through Furies but decided not to continue with the series. And I made it partway through the second Broken Empire book and abandoned it.
So, yes, if you can moderate, please volunteer!

I'll help...what do I have to do? (it's much easier to volunteer for something when you have no idea what you're volunteering for...)
It would be to lead the book discussions...we can set up the threads you need.
Ironic that the two series that neither Jon or I want to read the two series that won!

I am also happy help but don't no what to do.
Charlotte wrote: I am also happy help but don't no what t..."Yeah Charlotte! We can lead cluelessly together :D!
Hmm - that's unfortunate. Neither of the two series' are something I want to read. I tried Prince of Thorns, but I stopped after only a few chapters because I really disliked it. Oh well. :)
I'm going to join the read with.... The Furies of Calderon.
(I hope.)
This is a REALLY busy time for me with the holiday season coming up.

I've said it elsewhere, but if you put the Codex Alera down after reading the first one, you should really consider giving it another try. After Furies, I was also ready to abandon the series -- the protagonist was too young for my tastes (15), and the whole story was therefore more "juvenile" than I liked. However! The second book is a vast improvement and a thoroughly enjoyable read by itself, with far more politics and intrigue. And the third book is simply incredible. It's as close to a "perfect" fantasy book as I could ask for.
I have no idea whether or not Butcher will be able to keep up this level of quality for the final three books, but I don't think I can wait until November to find out. :P Will join in the discussion, but probably pick up Prince of Thorns for this read-along.
