ABANDONED. short story about an only child on beach with parents

Only child who is young maybe 2 or 3 with parents on beach being observed by older woman and her invalid grown son. Thought it was called "The only child" but could never find it. Could be old. Was in an Englishclass texbook in highschool in late 70's.
