Mark Adderley (markadderley) | 2 comments I just wanted to introduce myself to the group. My name is Mark Adderley. I was born in Crewe, England, but married an American lady and now live in the States. I'm an English professor, specializing in the early periods of British and French literature (Beowulf to the end of the Renaissance). I'm in Missouri right now, but am moving to Wyoming in about three weeks. I'm also the author of a novel, The Hawk and the Wolf, the first part in a series called the Matter of Britain (see my website at www.markadderley.net).

Sari (sarijj) | 3 comments My name is Sari Nichols. I currently live in Nevada. I am a medieval history geek. I am in school earning my degree in humanities. I had always hoped to earn a Masters in Medieval history so I can teach it, but with the state of the economy I am reathinking my options. I have a hugh library of British history books. I look forward to adding more.

Don't give up your dreams for economic reasons. There's more to life than a salary.

Cheers,
Mark Adderley.

message 4: by Sari (new)

Sari (sarijj) | 3 comments Oh I agree life is more than a salary. If however I take out a student loan to earn my Masters then a salary will become very important. At least the to government. I just finished listening to an NPR program on college graduates. It seems right now those who want to teach at the college level are not finding jobs. Many colleges are cutting back on courses as they lay instructors off. I still have a year to consider my options and will not give up without some kind of fight.

Thalia Boy it would be a shame to give up on your passion. Too many people never even have one (or at least not one that's productive i.e. beer)

Anyways, I am history nut. I'm Canadian so I love all history being there isn't much Canadian history. I'm a bit of an anglophile, so British History tends to capture me more than others. I crammed in as many history credits as possible into my degree back when, lol! I love reading historical novels the most as I'm entertained and learning something but occassionaly I'm found to be reading non fiction too. I'm married with three young children. Pleased to meet you all.

Luanna Klaus | 1 comments Hi - I am a history geek...and a book junkie
Thank goodness, my husband is too - makes those trips to Powell's so much more fun -
I am currently focusing on the Tudors; but I am fickle gal, capable of switching to Diana Gabaldon, or even Terry Goodkind or George RR Martin at the drop of a hat.

I have been recently reading an overview of medieval history to gain a greater perspective. It is a fascinating area of research and new things seem to be dug up all the time (figuratively, but i guess literarly as well). If I wasnt so fixed on investigating the 18th and 19th centuries as the moment I would for sure put more energy into looking into specific areas of medieval times.

If you ever find any good Canadian history books let me know. I am heading into that area of inquiry as well. i was going to try to look into Montreal history and then down through Ontario.

message 20: by Kellie (new)

Kellie | 3 comments I signed up last night & just wanted to introduce myself, I am Kellie. I was born and raised in Kent near Battle (Battle of Hastings). I now live in Dubai but we will be moving to Germany for 4 years starting next year. My interest in history started very young, my mum is history mad and used to read us whatever book she was reading rather than children's stories. She is a card carrying full participant in the Richard III Society. My early interests were of course the Wars of the Roses and the Tudors. I went through a Victoria phase for a while as well. I say phase but I have amassed a massive book collection that has literally followed me to 4 continents and is comprised of over 450 historical non-fiction books (sorry guys, not too into historical fiction.) By the age of 18 I had at least 1 biography of every King/Queen of England and most of their spouses from Edward the Confessor to the current Queen. Now I have several books from various aspects on most of them. I branched out in my 20's to other European royal families, although I have mainly focused on Germany, Russia, Austria & France. I also have many books on all of the children and grandchildren of both George III & Queen Victoria. Since my late 20's I have been on a quest for hard to find and rare history books and have found 2 second hand book shops that are an absolute treasure for any true history book collector that I periodically return home to England to raid along side my mother. I don't dare utter their names here as judging by the posts I have been reading I fear at least 50% of you will hunt them down and raid them before I am able to get back to them again and I often leave much of my wish list behind (somewhat tearfully) each time I visit them. I also fear if they realise there is a demand for these books they will raise their prices which are way too reasonable for their own good ;) I am very excited to have found this website :)

Jonathan | 1 comments Hello everyone,
I enjoy history, like everyone else who is in the group! Living currently a hour north of NYC next to the Connecticut border. I have a massive collection of history books from across the history of Europe. My favorite time period is World War 2. British history is something I really want to learn more about, considering I am a massive LFC fan and I would love to live there. Currently not in college but looking to get back in. I hope to talk to everyone here and to share my love of history with you all!

Vance Woods (anglophiletoad) | 1 comments Greetings all!
From Waco, Tex. I am a British and Latin American history nut (the former thanks to Charles Dickens, the latter to seven years in Argentina as a teenager). I have a Master's degree in church-state studies (sort of religion meets poli sci meets history), and did my thesis on Christianity in early medieval Britain (Synod of Whitby, to be exact). The periods in which I'm most interested now are the Victorian Age through the present, although my favorite book is Garrett Mattingly's The Armada.

message 25: by Gina (new)

Gina (sagenundlegenden) | 2 comments Hello all. I live in California. I studied German literature with an emphasis in medieval. I'm interested in ancient and medieval history of all sorts, but particular areas are military history, rural life, German and Norse peoples (including their settlement in Britain), and Byzantium/ Central Asia. I seriously debated an academic career but decided against it, however I still study history as much as I can.

I also do some writing for fun and may try my hand at writing historical fiction.

message 26: by Madoc (last edited Nov 19, 2011 04:41AM) (new)

Madoc Roberts | 1 comments Hello I live in Cardiff and have just had my first book published. It is the true story of a Welsh man who became a Nazi spy and his daughter became a Hollywood film star. I won't name the book here because some groups don't like that. (If you want more details then contact me) but I am interestd in the moral dilemmas that face ordinary people in times of war. Why do they do what they do? Is it for their country, their family or just themselves? I am also interested in the notion of the hero. When do we award this title and is it on the basis of someones actions, their motives or the outcome of what they do?

Been a Tudor Era fan ever since The Other Boleyn Girl came out in 2008!
Feel free to send me a friend's request on here!

RJay (plantagenetjunkie) | 5 comments For the Tudor fans who just joined ... the Plantagenets ruled for 300 years. They are ever so much more fascinating that the Tudors. If you haven't read any of her books, start with Sharon Kay Penman's Henry II-Eleanor of Aquitaine series. You'll be hooked.

message 31: by Crystal (last edited Aug 07, 2012 07:53PM) (new)

Crystal Lee (crystalleeauthor) | 3 comments Hi there. I'm a fan of reading both nonfiction and historical fiction about the Tudors. My favorites are Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, so much so that I wrote a historical fiction of them told from his POV, where he's the victim. I plan to publish it next year.

The more research I did on them, the more I became interested in their predecessors. This stuff is so juicy you coudln't make it up, and it's better than any soap opera ever. I'm hoping to get some good recs here. So happy to have found this group. I already have a sizable to-be-read list on these two individuals and his other wives, so it's time to build the list on other British historical figures. I basically love everything British, Scottish and Irish.

I'm a part of the Tudor Lover's group too, and I absolute love being there. I know I'll love this group too. Thanks for listening to my drivel.

Crystal

Mark Singer (markesinger) My name is Mark Singer and I am from the Philadelphia area of the Unites States. I have always been interested in all matters historical, and my interest in British history was rekindled when I took a college course in Modern Britain: 1815-2012 at Temple University last year.
Since then I have read:
The Founder: Cecil Rhodes and the Pursuit of Power
The Rise and Fall of the British Empire
Richard III
Henry VII
and
Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 12 comments Hi, Mark. Which one did you like best?

message 41: by Mark (last edited Mar 02, 2013 11:47AM) (new)

Mark Singer (markesinger) Which did I like best of those five?
The Founder: Cecil Rhodes and the Pursuit of Power
It is well written, thoroughly researched, and shows the importance of Rhodes in the history of South Africa. One doesn't have to "like" Rhodes to like the book.

Mark Singer (markesinger) I am currently reading Henry II by W. L. Warren. So far it is very good and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about Henry and his times.

A recommendation - read everything by Sharon Kay Penman.
2nd vote: The Greatest Traitor by Ian Mortimer.

Mark Colenutt | 1 comments Hi everyone. My name is Mark Colenutt and I haven't been on Goodreads all that long but I have always loved history. I studied early modern British history at school, then Medieval History at Uni and recently an MA in British Imperial history.

You could call me a bit of a devil's advocate in the sense that what drives my passion for historical knowledge is revisionist history. If we take the principal that history is written by the victors then when it comes to British history I am more interested in learning the other side of events. I was born and bred in Devon, England so I know our side of the story. Was it a mutiny/rebellion in 1857 or really the first war of independence?

I hope I will meet some revisionists among you.
