Michael Ray (mcray) My spelling is actually pretty good, but my typing not so much. I'm constantly typing 'you' when I mean 'your' and I've probably announced seven or eight 'writing springs' on Twitter.

I wouldn't say that my spelling is good, but my Ipad spelling is worse! I typed a message yesterday and I typed COMPUTER and later, I saw it had changed it to COMPUTERING. Why the 'ING'?

Also I've noticed that Office 2003 loved to mark the possessive its as wrong and wants me to replace it with it's. I hate seeing red marks on my manuscripts, so sometimes, when possible, I try to turn the sentence around until the warnings disappear.

message 53: by Carl (new)

Carl JK, I'm American but spell grey with the e. I've done it for years because that's how it ought to be spelled.

What bothers me when I write is I write how I speak.

Oh I do use rather a large amount of Adverbs.

Is it a British thing? lol :p

message 55: by Carl (new)

Carl Bisky, I see more adverbs in Brit books. Why not revel in them?

Nothing wrong with adverbs and adjectives. You just need to make sure that you don't always use the same. I noticed that I was using very and really, really very often. :P when I first had my manuscript edited. (In fact that was about the only thing the editor did, scratched the adverbs.) I partly followed her advice. and removed all my 'very/really' but kept many of the other ones. :P

Hmm maybe I won't delete all the times I use 'quite' and 'rather' :P

Splendid.

J.P. Sloan (jpsloan) | 19 comments I'm going to go ahead and add the word "relevant" to the list of words I want to set on fire. I keep trying to spell it with all "e's".

message 59: by Ann (new)

Ann Thorrson (ann_thorrson) | 2536 comments Mod
I can spell relevant easily but irrelevant confuses me completely. Maybe its the way I pronouce it?

message 60: by David (new)

David Wilmot (davidmwilmot) | 9 comments I have the privilege of slight dyslexia and spelling has always been an issue with me. But after tens of thousands of time of spelling the "teh" when I am typing because my mind is just a little ahead of my fingers it is getting just a little old. LOL
The other joy of dyslexia is putting the right "write" word in a sentence and using the wrong spelling of the word. Spell check is useless at finding errors like this.
I do feel blessed at having a computer and Google to help me with spelling, without them I would never feel comfortable in writing.
Brisky, remember there is always room for an adverb or two. Have a great day to all!

@David YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not the only one having problems writing her name right the first time. Although for me it's always Biksy, not Brisky.
Shall we had that to the words we always misspell?

Sowwy I just couldn't resist. /ducks

Its alright, I'm dyslexic too and my middle name is Denise.

I spelled it Densie on more than one query letter.

WHY MUM?! YOU KNEW DAD HAS IT!

Guess they compensated with Ann.

Also, Bisky is short for Biscuit. For those who need the spelling help :p

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 1053 comments Mod
Oh but I love Densie! (More than Denise. /blush)

I think with the computer age, pretty much everyone suffers a little from dyslexia. Some more than others, but who can say they never interchange letters at some point or another.

I know that for me, if not for auto correct, my messages would be hard to read. (Well they are still, but they would be even harder.) :p

message 65: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Fridge (adrianfridge) Most recently I've been writing "lightening" instead of "lightning."

Oh and I learned a cool rule for Grey v. Gray.
grAy in America
grEy in England

I prefer grey though. I suck at being 'Murican.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 1053 comments Mod
I guess Canada is closer to England. I've learned to spell it grey and the first times I saw it written gray felt funny. Now I don't pay attention. Grey is gray and gray is grey. All the same. :P

The rule is cool though. Thanks for sharing!

message 67: by Wayne (new)

Wayne Elsner | 13 comments Thanks for spell check but I have to watch for the words 'to the' when placed together but typed out as 'tot he'. Space in the wrong place but they are both words and spell check doesn't help.

Darn 6AM fat fingers anyway. I'll make a note of it.

You can program your Word (if that's what you use, but I'm sure other programs have the option too) to automatically fix teh to the every time you type it. I do that too. It's a common mistake.

message 70: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Castro (nicolecastro) | 116 comments I spelled weird wrong for YEARS.

message 71: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 1053 comments Mod
@Nicole ME TOO! I still do from time to time. In fact all words with IE or EI I misspell at some point.
Also words such as night, strength etc.. I never know when to put the h before the t and vice versa.

message 72: by Harmony (new)

Harmony Kent (harmonyk) Right - what's the point of a rule if it's then going to be broken? I before E except after C ... and then we meet the exceptions ... seriously??
I spelled 'Environment' wrongly for YEARS ... since when did it have an 'n' after Enviro?? lol :D

Heidi Barnes | 86 comments My latest ones are amoung vs among, and I want to make be careful one word. It just looks wrong to me as two words.

Some programs will, others won't it just bugs me to death that after years of typing one would think that my mind would get it right. Oh one more thing about typing, if I type a note of say 100 words I may have 1 or 2% spelling errors, yet if I hand write the same 100 words I will miss spell 10% or more.

message 76: by Ann (new)

Ann Thorrson (ann_thorrson) | 2536 comments Mod
amoung vs among

I don't know what one is right ._.

message 77: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 1053 comments Mod
Maybe it depends on the country? I've never seen amoung but I've seen and use among plenty of time. (And even the spell checker is underlining amoung.)
My spell checker doesn't like British it seems. All words such as honour, labour etc. are noted wrong. :(

message 78: by Ann (new)

Ann Thorrson (ann_thorrson) | 2536 comments Mod
I like that since Scrivener seems to have British developers it has more obscure words that Word doesn't recognise lol

message 79: by Claire (new)

Claire (cycraw) | 278 comments There is no u in among even in Britain. It always seemed to me like there should be, but there isn't.

I think that's why I keep putting it in. It sounds like it should be there.

Harmony Kent (harmonyk) Hearing my five and seven year old niece and nephew learning words and spelling reminds me how illogical English is :3

Ah well that one I had to learn it quickly after we became owners of 3 wiener dogs (dachshunds). That's one word I'll never forget how to write now. :P
