Well, the book is about a lord who meets a the heroine when she rescues him from bandits in the woods. The heroine is quite poor and she lives in a house with elderly servants and her mother. Her father was forced to marry her mother and before he left he have a tin locket. (It later turns out that he has another wife and daughter, whom he gives a gold locket). For a reason I don't remember the hero and heroine get married and she goes with him to London and to be taught to be a lady by his cold mother. The hero travels somewhere leaving his young wife to navigate society by herself and her naïveté causes embarrassing situations. The hero is kidnapped and during his captivity uses an idealistic view of his wife to get through it until he can back to her. His wife on the other is becoming indifferent and cold from her time among the ton.
Once the hero manages to return, he finds his wife at the alter about to marry his cousin because they think he's dead and the cousin wants to support the wife. The couple is indifferent and resentful towards each other. There are several attempts on the heros life, by someone trying to get his fortune. In the last attempt in the book on the heroes life, The Lord believes his wife is involved however the truth comes out and they reconciliate and live happily ever after.
