Amber (ukaunz) I just finished The Shadow Year and give it ★★★★, what a great read! I thought I had guessed a lot of things, but the last pages still surprised me :-)

Next up I'm reading Thornwood House, which seems to have very similar themes to The Shadow Year - hopefully not too similar as I like variety in my books (or at least, the ones I read consecutively!).

I'm planning to read this as part of my Spring Challenge. I'm looking forward to it, several people have rated it highly.

It was a wonderful book Amber, and I'll be interested in your thoughts of Thornwood House :)

What did you think of it? It's been on my TBR list for quite a while.

Andrea | 2173 comments Thanks for the great challenge Brenda. I managed to get through Mateship With Birds (2013), Five Bells (2011), Caleb's Crossing (2011) and Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception (2011). Caleb's Crossing was my favourite, by far.

You're so lucky to have met him Brenda. I have seen him on Tuesday Bookclub and yes he definitely comes across as very down to earth and nice. He's also a very talented writer. I don't know why it has taken me so long to realise. I guess it was coming across his book for free at work that did it!!!

If you bought it Joanne, instead of waiting to get it from the library I don't think you'd regret it. It's only $18.94 at Big W.

Nicola | 1161 comments Have finished my September read
The Girl in the Steel-Capped Boots. by Loretta Hill by Loretta Hill The Girl in the Steel-Capped Boots. by Loretta Hill / Loretta Hill
Another book outside of my normal reading pattern but I did quite enjoy it - it would have been good if the author could have established a time frame earlier than the author's note at the end as I found it hard to believe it was up to date with 5 on/1 week in todays schedules!

message 219: by Kadi (new)

Kadi (kads) | 99 comments I only read Planet Elephant. I enjoyed it but I love those type of animal and conservation books. I might read another type of book for next month's challenge

Well, you've convinced me! I see it's part of a series. Did you find it was ok to read as a standalone, or would it have been better to go back to book #1?

It definitely can be a stand alone read Andrea. I'm usually a bit anal...can I say that here??...about reading books in order but other than knowing that one of the characters appears in the other 6, it has absolutely no bearing on this storyline. Having said that though I do want to read the other 6, only because this one was sooooo good!!!

message 222: by Amber (last edited Sep 30, 2013 05:33PM) (new)

Amber (ukaunz) Finished Thornwood House and gave it ★★★★, I've been lucky to have a run of fantastic reads lately! Full of mystery and suspense, a dash of romance and plenty of nail-biting action at the climax. The author did a great job of weaving the dark threads of the tragic family drama with beautiful descriptions of Queensland bush land. My only gripes were that I found it hard to keep track of all the characters and what had happened to them - but that also meant I couldn't guess too much of the plot, so it was definitely a thrilling read! - and that it veered into melodrama and cliché at times. However I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good yarn!

Well I have finally finished my September challenge of The Vale Girl...albeit late! I did like it a lot, though I have to agree with others that it did have an ending that was a bit of an anticlimax compared to how the story was going from the start....hope that's not a spoiler?? Still a very good debut!

Lexicon

Lol that okay Carol.

I glad you're enjoying the book.

message 232: by Carol (new)

Carol (mecaza) | 22 comments Finally finished Lexicon.. put it on my "didn't like" list.
Well I must be missing something - most others rated this book highly.. BUT.. it started off great - brilliant concept but by halfway through I was just lost. The plot was all over the place.. and, to me, just got stupid. Then I got to wishing it would finish.. hate to NOT finish a book. By two thirds of the way through I realised I was just wasting my time, read the last chapter and thanked god I hadn't wasted any more time on it.. Sorry, author, just didn't do it for me.

message 233: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments That's a shame about Lexicon Carol but it's not worth continuing if it's not for you.

Good new is, you've caught up.
