I just recently started reading number 3 in the Odd Thomas series Brother Odd. It's an ok read so far but not as good as I was hoping.
I'm attempting to get this series finished by reading one a month until I'm done as I have so many unfinished series around at the moment.

Elaine | 140 comments I've got 3 books on the go atm and they're all pretty "meh" I must say. They are Lisey's Story, The Kennedys: All the Gossip Unfit for Print and The Young Lion. As I've persevered with each of them I feel like I've gone too far to just give up on them. But the last great read I had was The Street Sweeper. Hopefully May will be better.

Carol Brill (goodreadscomuser_carolbrill) started Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen yesterday. About 110 pages in. so far, an easy, somewhat predictable read. Less literary than I expected, although can't say why I expected literary :)

Elaine | 140 comments I just started The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson as a Buddy read with one of my friends here on GR and I'm loving it. Finally a decent book that has me hooked.

Elaine, I've seen that book around an awful lot lately. I might have to check it out one day.
Glad you're enjoying it :-)

Elaine | 140 comments Thanks Michelle. It's been around for a while now and was really popular last year but I've only just gotten round to it. He's got a new book that just came out, you may have heard of it too.The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson . That one sounds even weirder and quirkier. But I really like his style.

Today I started reading The Alchemist for my real life bookclub.
I'm not really sure what I'm in for yet as I'm only a little way in but I'm hoping that I'll enjoy it as much as I've heard others have.

Michelle I read that quite a while ago and although I don't remember every detail, I do recall enjoying it over all. Hope you do end up liking it. Coelho always has something to teach in his writing and I like that about his books. Helps put things in perspective.

I'm reading Eugenia Eugenia by Mark Tedeschi for my Aussie Winter challenge. It's quite an extraordinary true story and quite riveting.

I read the book last year and appreciated it. I would like to try another of his titles. Currently re-reading, by accident, Stones from the River and I do remember liking it, can't remember much but as I go it will hopefully come back to me. I'm sure I'll get a lot more out of it the second time around.

Yes I've noticed that his book is written like a big message to the reader's inner self. It definitely gives you some things to ponder and think about while reading.

I've just started reading A Discovery of Witches and I don't mind it so far.
I'm keen to see how it develops as I'm not too sure where the story is going yet.

Michelle (shelld79) | 754 comments Mod
I'm still chugging along with A Discovery of Witches and am actually really enjoying it.
I should have nominated it as a quarterly chunkster though as it's a whopper of a book at almost 700 pages!
I need to find a way to tire my 3 year old out more so he sleeps longer to give me more time to read :-)

Simone Ramone (simoneramone) | 19 comments I'm reading Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann. Devine of a wealthy merchant family in Germany in the 19th C. Engrossing and written do that you can easily relate to the characters. Really enjoying it.

I'm currently reading Sweet Tooth for my real life bookclub and it's just not doing it for me at all. I'm very, very close to abandoning it and moving onto something else. My first Ian McEwan and probably my last.....

message 66: by Michelle, Too many books, too little time! (new)

Michelle (shelld79) | 754 comments Mod
I ended up giving up on Sweet Tooth. It read like a really bad b-grade movie so I just couldn't get myselt to finish it.

Instead I'm now reading The Cutting as part of a James Hayman readalong in the following group:
https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

It's been a great book so far and doing a readalong is fun!

So I've just started reading The Husband's Secret for my real life bookclub but haven't gotten far enough into it yet to have much of an opinion.
I'm hoping for good things though considering what so many others have said about it.

message 70: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 140 comments I really quite enjoyed that Michelle but my favourite of hers so far is still What Alice Forgot. Hope you do end up liking it. I'm reading The Passage and I must say although it's not my usual thing I'm enjoying it. Although I haven't really gotten far enough into it yet. I've been told it's quite scary so I'm a bit afraid of what's coming.

I'm really interested to see what you think of The Passage Elaine. I read that a little while ago but still have mixed thoughts about it and haven't decided whether I really want to read the sequel yet. I don't think there was anything too scary in it. I think the premise of the storyline itself is more haunting than anything.

I've been told not to have any expectations and that the book keeps changing...not sure what that means exactly but I'll wait and see. I will let you know when I'm done. Although it may take a while as I keep trying to fit in other books.

Here is my currently reading list. (I really need to stick to just one book I think!)

Around the World in Eighty Days - meh!
Swan Song - still going. I think I'll be reading this for another year at the rate it's taking me!
Summer Knight - on audio. I can't get enough of James Marsters as a narrator!

Nea (neareads) I'm reading Mutant Message Down Under and it's really interesting so far. I hope to finish it tonight.

So I'm around halfway through Still Alice Still Alice by Lisa Genova for my real life bookclub read next month and even though it's a nice quick book to read it's not grabbing me that much yet.
The subject matter is definitely a horrible situation but the story just seems to be taking its time to develop a bit too slowly for me.

message 79: by Todd (new)

Todd | 24 comments I am reading Sparrow by Mary Russell . . . still a bit slow going. I am simultaneously reading: Glimpsing Heaven: the stories and science of life after death. Unfortunately, that isn't as good as I thought it'd be, either. I read the book review on National Geographic and was intrigued. Anyway, I"ll stick with Sparrow, I think it'll get better . . . so many people recommended it to me!

Currently I am trying to get through our group read Mr. Mercedes which I am thoroughly enjoying in the small bursts that I am actually getting to it.
I've also just started listening to A Storm of Swords on audio and am really excited to be getting back into this world again.
I'm also still plugging along with Swan Song where I'm around 75% through but just can't seem to get the motivation to finish it. I feel like I'm missing something with this book as so many people love it but I just haven't felt the same way.

I'm currently reading The Blade Itself which I am really enjoying but am just not getting enough time to get through much more than a couple of chapters a night at the moment.
I'm also still listening to A Storm of Swords on audio and think I will be for the rest of the year with how long it is!
Also, I'm still plugging along very slowly with The Stand but know it's going to be a long project to get this one finished.

message 82: by Carol (new)

Carol Brill (goodreadscomuser_carolbrill) Just started The Wedding Gift for my local book club. The Wedding Gift by Marlen Suyapa Bodden
Recently read The Invention of Wings, The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and so far it feels like a similar story. I find it really hard to read about the brutality of slavery so taking it slow.

So I am STILL in what I am calling 'The land of The Stand' and don't think I will be getting out any time too soon. I am just over half way now and unless I take a week off life and lock myself away this book is easily going to take me into April at the rate I'm going.
Boy, will I be breathing a huge sigh of relief when I get that sucker finally finished though!

Colleen Just finished Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter 4.5 stars if I could. Really enjoyed the story and all the nuances to it. Also finished I Shall Be Near to You, which is a great love story set during the Civil War.

Now on to Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace ... One School at a Time.

I'm currently about three quarters of the way through reading Fallen Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate which I have had on my TBR for so long and now I'm a little bit disappointed with it to be honest. I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if I'd read it 15 years ago :-(

message 86: by Carol (new)

Carol Brill (goodreadscomuser_carolbrill) I'm reading Life Drawing for a FaceBook book club called Reading with Robin. It's well written. I'm finding the POV a bit distant which makes it harder for me to connect and care about the characters.

I haven't heard of that one before. My next real life bookclub read which I'll be starting once I've finished Fallen is The Stranger by Harlen Coben which I am really looking forward to.

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 5 comments I'm reading Reconstructing Amelia. It's taking me a bit to get into it, but I've heard from a few people that they didn't get drawn in right away either.

I'm buddy reading with my mom Have Mother, Will Travel: A Mother and Daughter Discover Themselves, Each Other, and the World. The authors have a habit of over writing for the subject matter, but some of it is very relatable to all mother/daughter relationships.

It's been so long since I updated this thread!

Currently I am reading our group read The Spartan and I'm actually really enjoying it so far.

I also recently started reading Eyrie and it really hasn't grabbed me yet. I'm finding the writing a bit too fluffy for my taste but I'm hoping once I get further into the story I'll start to enjoy it more.
