Bunxena -- A hat for teapots??? Answer: pretty ridiculous. Almost as bad as a sweater on a dog, even.

message 252: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
And I suppose you're going to defend "dog cozies" too? (Sigh.) It's getting harder and harder to be a curmudgeon around here.

HUSKIIIEEEEESSSSS!!!!!
I love huskies

i had an aunt who was a definite crumudgeon having studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in the early 1900's
she returned to northern maine and taught piano to the sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters of potato farmers
that leaves you crumudgeony, trust me
YOU DID NOT MESS WITH AUNT MARGARET

and she had two beeeauuuutiful malamute huskies that kept her cozy on the old family farm

I love Huskies too....not practical to own one though. I told you we are a practical lot down under.....that is why we also use tea cosies. I do knot knit, nor do I crochet. I have been known to embroider, but not since I had kids.

message 255: by rabbitprincess (new)

rabbitprincess Newengland -- it's a hat in the same way that draping a blanket over your head is a hat. :P

And dog sweaters can be useful for the short-haired breeds at least, especially up here in the Great White North. My cousin has a Basset hound who does not much like the cold, and I shall knit her a sweater once she finishes growing. (Don't worry, it won't be cutesy and revolting. It'll be very simple.)

Donna -- amen! Lukewarm tea is not very appetising. You can put it in the microwave to try to warm it up, but it doesn't quite taste the same.

Great White North? Oh. Yukon. As in Huskies. I confuse them with Malamutes. One's all white, right? Or one's all right, white?

Debbie -- That was a joke, yes? When you wrote: "I do knot knit," I mean. Very kfunny.

And moe, please don't make curmudgeons sound so "crusty" with that "crumudgeon" stuff. Talk about a dizzy spell! ;-)

(And I think it's cool she'd teach potato farmers' kids how to play piano. Spuds in the Key of G, and all that. Pass the sour cream.)

Bunxena, I see you're really into knitting!! Well, I've been doing it for some years already and, of course, I started with scarfs but now I'm trying to cope with my third knitted sweater! Though, I suppose tea cosies are a lot more complicated constructions - never seen one in my life :))
You know what? Let's go and make a special Knit Pickers Unite group to talk only about our knitting business! :))))

“Hi, my name is Lee”
Here’s your representative from Kansas, finally! No Dorothy jokes, please. Garrison Keillor-style jokes are welcome, though; I got my BA in English just last year. I am a part-time writing paraprofessional (glorified tutor/receptionist) at a community college and I tutor some elementary schoolers on the side. I am also soon to be married (8 days and counting!). My fiance is learning Biblical Greek, presently. I need to get him on here and have him compare Greek-ish things with you, M.d. He’s working construction this summer, though. Lengthy hours... :( I joined this group recently and have enjoyed reading all the posts. Such a fun-loving group! Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. (Japanese for "Please take care of me." I fear I'm a manga otaku, that is, a nerd. But I like "real" literature, too.)

message 271: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice to meet you Lee! So glad to welcome another midwesterner-- though some would not consider Texas midwest. Most Texans consider this a country unto itself (I'm not a native, so I'm not so diehard about it).

We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi, Lee (Rock Chalk Jayhawk). Welcome to the group. And congratulations on the impending marriage. I "BA-ed" in English, too. It's about all I'm good at.

As for your betrothed-to-be, a Biblical-Greek speaking construction worker is an interesting combination. One's so... erudite, and the others so... labor-intensive. Ah, well. Good to develop all the muscles, brain included.

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
I think the combination, especially if it comes in quality outer wrapping (:-) ) is called a 'Renaissance Man' NE. I have had a message from Prabha...things are very tense at work, with big (possibly not good) decisions due next week. She said to tell you guys she loves you all and will be back when she feels equal to it. Perhaps messages of support....?

Yes. Let's support Prabha through these rocky straits...

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) Hi,I'm Andi. I live in Topeka, KS. I have my mother who lives here and a dear, dear sister who lives in St. Charles, IL. I have a calico cat named Jasmine (my pride and joy). I am 55 and living in a handicapped, elderly apartment building, because I am on a walker. I love to read. I am studying English - Writing at Washburn University in my hometown. I am very happy to be a member of this group.

message 280: by Tyler (new)

Tyler (tyler-d) | 268 comments Hi, I'm Relyt, from Georgia, USA. I only recently joined Goodreads and stumbled upon this site today.

I have a real problem. Language matters to me. I'm not perfect at it -- maybe I'm not even good. But when I see language being abused, it makes me really, really nervous. Nobody knows why this is so. But as you can guess, I'm a very uptight guy these days, and I need somewhere to go to unwind and detoxify. So there. I said it.

I like posting, but what I hope to get out of this group is the insight other people convey in their own posting. So I'll likely be reading the threads more than starting any of my own, and responding if I think I have anything earth-shaking to add.

message 281: by [deleted user] (last edited May 12, 2008 10:16AM) (new)

A place to unwind and detoxify? I like that :) Welcome to the group Relyt! If you've been reading through some of the threads here, you will have noticed we're a pretty friendly (ok disregard the political and art debates-- they got a little heated . . . but nobody left as a result!) group always interested in new input. As NE says, post often!

message 282: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Hey, relyt. How do you pronounce that (rel-it?), and is it your real name or your nom de poste? My real name is New England, of course.

As for Georgia, I've driven through it and trained through it but never stopped and moseyed around in it. My loss, I'm sure.

Gidday Relyt (I'm Antipodean...you'll have to excuse me...I can't help it)! Enjoy trawling back through our threads...best way to get to know us!

message 284: by Tyler (new)

Tyler (tyler-d) | 268 comments Hi Sarah and NE; Gidday, Debbie --

Thanks for your welcome.

Sarah -- Yes, I think unwinding and detoxifying says it for me. I promise to avoid the politics thread for fear of mortal danger!

Newengland -- Because it's my screen name, its pronunciation alternates according to the taste of the reader. I've never been to your area, but I've always liked the people I've met from those states. Georgia's fine, but it's getting to the point that there is no there there.

Debbie -- I'm glad to meet people from so many places. You Antipodes always have charming accents and intelligent posts. I'm certain there must be more you in this group.

Thanks again. I've already seen threads I like here.

OK! I am opening a book. Not that kind of book....a betting book!!! We are almost due for another party in the kitchen....question is, what will it be for? My 50th (early in June) or our 200th member?! (Only 10 to go).
I bet my middle name publication that the 200th member party will be first!!!!!

message 286: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
You mean, it's time to get the screwdrivers out again (no, not the orange juice and vodka, the Phillips head and flathead) for door prizes? We failed miserably at identifying the 100th member last time (though we had it down to two).

My birthday snuck by without incident. I don't advertise. I also tell the wifey NO PICTURES and request a song other than that ever-lame "Happy Birthday" ditty. This year I had them sing "Shanendoah" (yes, I handed out words in advance).

Don't get excited, though. It wasn't a party or anything -- just my wife, son, and dog. Dashiell mauled the words something fierce (woof).

Yes, my dog noir is named after the famous detective writer. Only when I explain the name to many people, it doesn't help. I guess he's not so famous anymore...

No -- black lab mix (thus, the noir), right out of the shelter. We can't identify the "mix" part, but based on his behavior, we're guessing Tasmanian Devil-Makes-Him-Do-It.

message 292: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) Hello. I'm Sandi, a 46 year-old woman who will turn 47 on Monday. I'm the mother of a 25 year-old physics-teaching daughter and an almost-thirteen year old son. I have a bachelor of arts degree in English literature. All that reading wreaked havoc on my ability to compose grammatically correct sentences. Conversational writing tends to have more grammatical errors than formal writing. I'll do my best to keep my grammar correct.

message 293: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Hi, Sandi, and Happy Birthday a day early (or at least from the POV of the east coast, USA). Don't worry about your grammar. We're not that persnickety, and the only misstep I've made so far is correcting a poster's spelling once (he promptly hung up on us). Let's hear it for B.A.s in English! Huzzah!

Hi Sandi & welcome to our little corner of cyber space! We're not persnickity, I must agree (tho some of us may practice a little snarkidity-ness:)). We're here to ask questions, learn, meet new people with all the stuff that comes along with that-- very friendly group & we'll be having a party soon, so don't disappear :)

Sandi (sandikal) Thanks for the welcome!

message 297: by Tyler (new)

Tyler (tyler-d) | 268 comments Hi from me, too, Sandi. This is a good place to have a literature major. I'm having fits with The Sound and the Fury just this moment, and someone who can offer a word of explanation is always an asset.

As to grammar, I enjoy those discussions here, as well as the ones on euphemisms. You're right -- it's hard to keep grammar correct in writing. But it's good to practice at it just the same.
