Jan (auntyjan) | 1259 comments Even when he speaks English we can't understand him, Gabi. But at least he can tell we're friendly! I've given up on his puzzle in the very difficult mash up game!

Any new people...yes, this is still the place for introductions....we just have a tendency to get sidetracked around here. *wondering if New is still holding his breath*

M | 113 comments Hi, Amanda! I've never been to Maine, but my brother-in-law is from Rockland, so I've heard about it.

Gabi, I don't bother with emails from Goodreads, I just click on 'back to top' and then scroll down again looking for the red (1 new) on the topics I'm interested in.

Hello punters! I am new to the site. Most people find me approachable and chatty and are instantly engaged -until they get to know me better! Books? yes, I read 'em! I am still working on my profile and trying to wrack my brains over when I last read what....it could take some time. Meanwhile...life goes on........

Thanks Gabi - I can see the time difference may make me boggle eyed but I must go to bed now..........to sleep......perchance to dream? Gettawaywiyerr!

Hey, Philip. Welcome and see you in the morn. I, too, am retiring (and probably way earlier than you, given the time difference between New and Jolly Old England).

Scribble Orca (scribbleorca) | 631 comments Hello Philip,

now don't be persuaded
and don't be misled
for we don't mean to turn you
from your feet on your head
but you'll find we're a groupsome,
and sometimes right gruesome
just hang right on in there
and we'll bring you good cheer.

message 1971: by M (new)

M | 113 comments You're thirteen hours ahead of me, Jan. The sun hangs around as long as it can on the West Coast, so Ruth doesn't see the sunset until two hours after we do.

I was just posting this to let you know that I won't be able to rescue any maidens today (even if all they want to be rescued from is virtue). I'm headed over to the Deep South (Louisiana) to visit my parents, who are moving plants into the greenhouse in anticipation of the first freeze. But I'll be back on Sunday! If a dragon attacks, just take refuge in the nearest tower.

Your humble knight-at-arms,
M

Yes, I have noticed!
And with over 1000 members, only a handful actively post!
What's with that?

Are the L&G Pedantic Police locking them up somewhere?

I think people are just cavalier about group joining, just as many are cavalier about "friending" -- consider how many friend requests from people you've never talked to, much less come across on GR! And consider, too, how people collect friends -- sometimes by the hundreds! Same is true with groups. Me, if I'm a member, I want to participate!

message 1984: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Same here. I have not joined any groups except my initial ones. I always wait for others to ask to be my friend and even then I get into trouble sometimes. haha

message 1985: by M (new)

M | 113 comments How do members keep up with more than two or three groups? L&G is practically a world unto itself, a perpetual coffee klatsch. The people here are so interesting that a return to the annoying demands of the everyday world requires an almost superhuman display of patience.

Jan (auntyjan) | 1259 comments M wrote: "How do members keep up with more than two or three groups? L&G is practically a world unto itself, a perpetual coffee klatsch. The people here are so interesting that a return to the annoying deman..."
With difficulty, M. I first joined Goodreads a) to list my books and b) to get recommendations about books people were enjoying. Then I noticed a group called 1001 books you must read before you die, and I discovered there were thousands of other people out there crazy enough to enjoy the challenge. ThenI noticed a couple of groups which were concentrating on classical literature, so as long as their book of the month was listed in 1001 books, I started reading it.After a while I stopped listing books, and I've probably listed fewer than half of them. Soon I couldn't keep up with reading all the books and chatting to all the other bookworms. Then a group moderator requested that I join a group. Then the Weekly Short Story Contest group was featured, and I noticed you could not only write short stories, but poems as well, so I had to join that one. Then L&G was featured. Now, I don't find grammar all that interesting, but I'm fascinated with words and their etymology, and relationships between English and other languages. Then I read some of the threads and realised that there were some very funny people around here, so I just had to join. Then Aussie Readers requested that I join, so I couldn't reject an offer from such a friendly bunch. So how do I manage being in 8 groups?

Now that my broken arm is healed (except for the swelling in the hand) and I'm back to my busy life?
Not very well. I concentrate on three groups, and try not to have more than two books on the go.
First stop L&G, to see what's happened while I was asleep. Then the two groups whose books of the month I'm reading, which makes me realise I'm getting behind with my reading. Then I try to drag myself away from the computer to attend to whatever needs doing that day. By mid-morning I may need a break and perhaps check in on Aussie Readers to see what's happening there. By lunchtime, there's a slight pause, as the Americans have gone off to bed, and the Brits aren't up yet. However a certain New Zealander has arrived home from work and there are plenty of Aussies around. By this time, I may have forgotten about other tasks. I usually check in again after the evening meal, then I might read in bed. Somehow it's hard to find enough time for reading and writing when all these interesting messages keep popping up. But I do like some of the games. Sometimes when you're searching for a book, you come across the most intriguing books. I never did finish listing my books, and I've had more recommendations than I will probably manage to read in my lifetime, but Goodreads has been so much more than that. I've made new friends from all over the world, started reading novels again, and reconnected with my creativity. But as for time management?...still a work in progress, but I am enjoying it here, especially this group!

message 1987: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments LOL Pretty much the same routine here.

message 1988: by M (new)

M | 113 comments One of the reasons this is such a great group is that it doesn't take itself too seriously, but thrives on witty rejoinders. I think that's why people like it and find themselves lurking or becoming members. It isn't coincidental that the moderators are school teachers, who are among the brightest people in society. You can't help but learn something in a group like this. You have so much fun that you learn without even realizing it.

Okay, since I'm guilty of this offense, I thought I would pipe up and explain myself (she says with a sheepish lilt to her voice). It's a time issue for me... working full time, in school full time and raising three kids (4 counting my husband). However, I LOVE being a passive member and I look forward to the "language and grammar" update e-mail in my inbox every morning. It takes 2 minutes to read, but the pleasure lingers long past that two minutes (and, I learn something every now and then too!). I hope you are more flattered than offended that your group draws such an audience (1000+ members).

I'll also confess, that on the few occassions when I've tried to login and respond to a thread, it's been to difficult to find the post. There must be an easier way than just scrolling through them all...

message 1992: by M (new)

M | 113 comments Brenda, I long ago gave up trying to keep track of everything that's been said. There's too much material. I just jump in and look around, and if something comes to mind, I post it. Then I ask my wife if I've said something I should be ashamed of.

Scribble Orca (scribbleorca) | 631 comments You'll notice his wife obviously doesn't answer too often. She's far too sensible.

But...HEY BRENDA! Nice to have caught you out lurking and to have succeeded in dragging you into the brilliant sunshine of our collective gaze! Congratulations on the full-everything. And you still have time to read our...erm...rambunctiousness.

Thanks, GN. It's that rambunctiousness that keeps me lurking for more.

message 1998: by M (new)

M | 113 comments I hope my wife thinks of me that way. Faux pas are a way of life with me. I gave up finally on social grace and learned instead to get better at embarrassing myself.

Come out into the open, girl! Let your hair down! No need to lurk, unless you suffer dissentery. Then you might attract verbal extermination!

message 2000: by M (new)

M | 113 comments I can direct you to the Dysentery Group, but I think it's in the process of a colonoscopy right now.
