I got bored looking at my face....I see it every day! I have always loved Eloise and I came across a couple (one bookish and one balletish) so will play with those for a while!

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) | 1 comments Hello everyone. My name's Stacy and I'm an author of mainstream fiction. I am glad I was accepted into the group and it appears to be a very charming, relaxed and informative place. You can read more about me on my page and I've also put up a sample of my latest thriller, "Melody". I hope you come and check it out and vote. I look forward to being a part of the group. Best Wishes!

message 554: by Summer (new)

Summer | 87 comments This is a group of prolific posters and so witty, too. I feel a bit intimidated.

I confess, I am here to pick your collective brain, but I thought I should introduce myself first. My name is Summer. I am a second year nursing student who secretly prefers liberal arts to the sciences. Alas, this wretched economy has inspired a practical choice.

message 555: by Tyler (new)

Tyler (tyler-d) | 268 comments We're all here to pick one another's brains, so you're in good company.

The practical world has cost liberal arts many a student.

Boreal Elizabeth | 401 comments ahh
don't be intimidated
speaking only for myself
more half witted might define my qualifications for the group
i was actually considering this very topic
or one similar
levels of erudition
education self and imposed
i received a pretty good early start
and a middling to decent college education
but have been occupied with raising children and making a living in business so...
feel i've lost a bit of my edge
so...we all can fine tune or gross tune or tune up anytime we want
learning really is life long
i've noticed in this group the vocab level
is above me
and i love it
i've learned more new words in an evening here than i have in years
and it doesn't seem like studying

message 563: by Novi (new)

Novi Bobby Hello, I'm new to the group and I'm loving everything I see here.

I am an Indonesian and teach ESL here. I formally learned English until high school and from then on, I learn most about the language by myself. So anything that can help me learn more about English is exciting for me.

I do have to acknowledge my 5-years living in Ohio helps me get the sense of the language, but I get so annoyed every time people think that my knowledge of English grammar and my fluency come solely from that 5-year experience. To that I used to say: "Not really. I also read, watch and listen." Now I can add "I also joined L&G."

Welcome Novi...look forward to your contributions.

message 565: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Hi, Novi. How did you land in Ohio (of all places)? To think, if you still lived there, your vote for president in two months would be considered GOLD to the candidates (Ohio being more important than most other states... it's a long story that starts with the Founding Fathers and ends with the Electoral College, where no one graduates).

message 566: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannahyoung) Hello! I'm another newbie here, although I actually joined a few months ago and lurked. I studied English Language at A-Level and really loved looking at etymology especially. I've just finished to go to uni though (and study English Lit instead) and already I miss it! :( So yes! I'm really looking forward to being around here and being wordy with you all.

message 567: by Novi (new)

Novi Bobby I went to Ohio State. How I actually landed in Ohio exactly, I'm not sure...

I wouldn't vote. I'm not an American. And I'm glad I won't have to say "see, I voted for the other guy."

message 568: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
I ALWAYS wind up saying, "See, I voted for the other guy!" because my candidates have a habit of losing. There's even a saying here in the states: "As Newengland goes, so doesn't go the country." Harsh, but true.

message 569: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 16546 comments Mod
Ha. I thought it was my vote that was the Kiss of Death.

message 570: by Marian (new)

Marian (gramma) | 39 comments In Ohio, your vote is worth even more if it gets counted.

message 576: by Boreal Elizabeth (new)

Boreal Elizabeth | 401 comments ok

but only deb can make moe squeal

rilke
a true classic that a lot of people put on their lists of authors to read before they die

and then they die

now's your chance
and it has brevity
wit and inspiration on it's side
vote soon
vote often

message 577: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 16546 comments Mod
I tried the Rilke, I really did. Maybe the trouble is that I'm an old poet.

Old-Barbarossa Hello again folks.
Nice to see the world didn't end when the folks at CERN switched on their new toy.
Loads of new folk since I was last here. Greetings.
Won't be doing the group read thing at the minute...hefty backlog, about to start the whole Musketeer's cycle by Dumas and a couple of chunky Hx books on the go. I enjoyed "The Mother Tongue" though when I read it for what it's worth, he did a similar book about American English as well.

message 593: by Old-Barbarossa (new)

Old-Barbarossa Summer, where are you studying? What's the course like? Much "hands on" or loads of theory at the minute?

message 594: by Summer (new)

Summer | 87 comments I'm at a community college associate's program, and I am taking one extra course a semester towards the bachelor's degree. I have 12 hours of clinical time and 6 hours of theory/lecture each week. I think it's evenly balanced. This semester, I am also taking Microbiology (required) and Pathology (elective). All that science is proving to be a bit much for my brain right now, but I'm hoping it warms up to it.
