Hmm, you raise a very good point there. It is set in a city, but is third person, and is written in present tense. And has a male protagonist. But doesn't have a happy ending. I'm not sure it ever will!

@Neil From everything you've said, I still believe you have an Urban Fantasy novel. The tense doesn't matter (at least it shouldn't). It's a choice the writer makes and as far as the third person pov, they do say USUALLY has first pov, they don't say they never have.

You mention male protagonist... it is to tease me? I keep telling people left and right that I prefer books with a male protagonist. :P (Dresden is a male btw, in case you don't know.)

Neil, I would love to read a Paranormal Thriller! To me, that sounds much more exciting!
Suzanne, The first thing I always get asked about is my genre and I never have an answer. Hopefully, Man of the House, is different enough to make a good impression. I've had several requests for partial and full manuscripts. I get good feedback for the writing, but most say they don't know how to market it.

Tammy, without giving us too much about the book, what does it talk about? Maybe we could help find the genre. Your problem might explain why although there are so many different genre, so many books are still only classified as Fiction...

G.G., It's the story of a 12 year old Muslim boy who becomes the head of the household (a role he has mixed feelings about) after his father is killed during the 1st days of the Bosnian War. He has to take care of his mother,6 year old sister, and a baby. When their village is overrun by Serbian soldiers and their home is burned to the ground, Alaga (the boy) meets with Sgt. Ray Burton (an American NATO soldier)& what remains of his ambushed patrol. Burton offers to take Alaga and family to safety or to try to. Burton comes to care for Alaga and his little sister, but has a dark secret that prevents him from caring too much.

Wow! A story about courage and the side effect that war has on its victims. I can see where this can be hard to classify. How about Realistic Fiction?

When I first learned about urban fantasy I heard that Dresden was one of the only (or maybe only decent) male protagonist in that genre. I'm hoping mine is as good as, but having been so mired in creating the character and secondary's over so many years it's difficult to take an outsiders view, especially when you know what's coming but the reader doesn't!

There are a few others too Neil. They are just not as popular. Anton Strouthas a good series too in the same genre but instead of the protagonist being a mage (Dresden) his has the power of psychometry.

As for the difficulties of separating ourselves from our characters for an unbiased view, you are asking for the impossible. We live with them in our heads for so long, how can we not love them? :)

G.G., Is Realistic Fiction a genre? Does anyone know where there is a comprehensive list of genres with a definition of each? I write so much different stuff, having a list might be useful.

@Tammy I did a search for kicks List of genres in literature and that is what it gave me:

Now all the genres are not listed there but this is what they say about it Realistic fiction – story that is true to life

Maybe it could also fit into Tragedy?

I read a blog by an agent once where she said that genre is something the publishers decide on in the end. They know which shelves they want to shelve your book on, so not to worry about it. Unfortunately this only helps those who are going the traditional publishing route.

@G.G - here's something I thought you'd find amusing. I've just popped into the only bookshop in Oxford that stocks my book to find it right next to the Dresden series. Now that's purely down to our surnames (Bursnoll/Butcher) but I thought it amusing nonetheless!

Hi everyone. I don't know why it took me so long to write an introduction. My names is Jessica and boy do I have a lot of projects. Currently, I have several pieces floating out there looking for traditional publication. When it comes back that I have been rejected (or not), I will be self publishing my first chapbook of poems (summer probably).

Then I have a literary fiction novel, a YA werewolf novel and an adult horror vampire novel. All in the works. Currently the literary fiction novel is the longest and will most likely be typed in the most. But I can't promise where inspiration will strike most.

Gawd, I need focus. :P
