RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I had never heard of this Scribd site until a story on NPR today...I tried to find the story's text but failed, by the way.

If I heard the story right, it's an electronic site in which authors can post their work and charge as much/little as they want. I'm not sure if the texts are compatible with kindle, but the commentator made a point of saying that the kindle's market penetration wasn't as deep as Amazon wanted you to believe, anyway. Some author also said he made more charging two dollars for his work on scribd than through a traditional publisher. What do you think? Anyone use the site? Potential? Downsides?

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Ooh! I remember this site from a coupla years ago, but it looks like it's gone through some kind of upgrade. I was just looking at one of their pages for 'Great Content' to see what they have, and there is a blurb about an article called 'Innovating Through Recession' which seemed to have kind of spawned this new feel of Scribd. I need to investigate it all more but it really intrigues me that they are using it almost like a YouTube site for books, articles, more traditional paper publications. It may not pan out if the content is crap, but I wonder if it will be a new mode of connecting & getting valid information out to more people. It may also be a good site for new authors to get their writing out there. Again, potential for crap but...

They say necessity is the mother of invention – if so, then the global recession is a fertile grandmother! The recession has forced millions to find new and creative ways of getting their message out. But there’s a silver lining to even these troubling storm clouds.

A few months ago, Scott Orn of Lighthouse Capital uploaded a fantastic article, “Innovating through Recession” by Professor Andrew Razeghi to Scribd in the hopes of sharing some innovative ideas with others. The experiment was a smashing success – so much, in fact, that the original author has seen a boost to his business, fielded requests for reprints in major magazines, and landed at least a dozen speaking engagements around the world.
