ABANDONED. ya novel in which main character does presentation on mathematician

All I can remember is that a guy and a girl have to present on a famous mathematician and they choose a pirate...I need to know the name of the book and who the mathematician they wrote about was.

When did you read this Kaity? Was it a short story, or was this a minor part of the story? Do you remember anything else about the story?

She was new I think and he said they would do the project together and it pissed some popular girl off because he was really popular or just really good looking...it was a full-length novel and had to have been written in the last 5 years.

This reminds me a bit of Accidentally Fabulous, though I don't remember the mathematician presentation, so it probably isn't the right one.

There's a Professor Paul Sally - famous mathematician, called "The Math Pirate" because he had an eye patch.
