A Word from the Mods

I absolutely LOVE all the great ideas for challenges that people come up with! And everyone seems to be very welcoming and friendly, with lots of encouragement and suggestions. And, of course, the moderators do a great job keeping everything organized!
I wouldn't be too surprised to see the number double again by the end of the year.

Right now, they are rather tucked away as posts inside the Mod Corner and seem out of place to me. As a new member when I was less involved in the group, I don't think I looked for new posts in the "A Word from the Mods" thread (I love to now though!) nearly as often as I looked at new posts in topics that were about book discussions, choosing what to read, and reading challenges.
Just my two cents here :) It's just since the polls are open for a very short amount of time, making this announcement more prominent as members scroll through the forums would in my opinion draw in more voters. I realize you can get to the poll by scrolling to the very bottom of the main discussion page, but I actually didn't even notice that until about a month ago! I don't really ever scroll all the way down because you hit Archived folders, friends in the group, members in the group, and the Bookshelf listing the past group reads we've read before you get to the poll.
We have 3,455 members now, and for the March Group Read poll, 81 people voted. That's 0.02% of the members in the group. I realize we had probably about 200-300 less people a month ago and of course am aware that probably hundreds of members never even sign into Goodreads, but I think it's still worth a shot if it's possible for you guys to make that happen. If not, no big deal :] I love this group and am happy with it, but just thought that might help improve new member participation. Joining a new group can be overwhelming.

The theme for June is end of term, and you can nominate a book for our June group read here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Quarterly Challenges:
Always a Nominee, Never a Winner
Hunger Games
Monthly Challenges:
Summer Vacation Spell Out

Enjoy!

Cassandra has been a wonderful contributor to this group and also a member of our welcome committee. We're excited to have Cassandra join the mod team.

I'm a 21-year-old information science student from the Pacific Northwest. I just got into my program this year, and I absolutely love it! As far as reading goes, I tend to read a lot of science fiction and fantasy, but I'm really open to anything. I always want to read more nonfiction, but somehow it always ends up a little farther down the "to-read" pile than the fiction. I love to chat about books and swap recommendations.
I can't wait to see what 2015 holds in general and for this group in particular!

Thank you, Adriana, for everything! <3

And because every action has an equal and opposite reaction, Jodi will be joining our mod team! Jodi has been with the group since February of last year, and has posted more than anyone else except for me and Adriana--amazing. She's truly a dedicated, engaged member of the group. She's also been an active member of the Welcome Committee where she's made our newest members feel welcome. Congratulations, Jodi!

Thanks, Craig, for all you've done to make the group such a good one, and I hope we still see you around here a lot.

And good luck, Craig, in all your future endeavours!!

Can you believe we've made it this far? This group is so incredible--thanks to all of YOU! Thank you for being such a fun, supportive place that new members want to join. <3

We received quite a few applications - which is wonderful - and we thank you all for your active participation in this group.

And Congratulations to all Moderators past and present for reaching the 5000 mark!
And good luck to Jacqueline, ReGina and Victoria for being part of the welcoming committee, it's good to hear so many people are willing to help this wonderfull group.

Congratulations to the new members of the welcoming committee! I'm looking forward to working with you and getting to know you!

This is a first for us, at least I think it is. We had a tie for our group read poll this month. For the month of July we are going to have two group read books. Our two books are going to be Water for Elephants and Americanah. Joanne is going to lead Water for Elephants and Cassandra is going to lead Americanah. I hope you all will join us in one or both reads.

The welcome committee works hard to send out messages to new members and help encourage existing members with their challenges. I'm excited to work with these ladies as we head into our busy end-of-year season.

Thanks, I'm excited to be part of it.

I am sure I am going to need a lot of help from you going forward :P

Congrats!! Many thanks to all the moderators for the time and for making this a fun place to be!

Yay Lynn! I'm excited for you to lead the discussion. The waiting list for this book at my library is really bad too. I put it on hold a month or two ago (along with a bunch of others), and it's the only one still on hold.
There are plenty of copies but all checked out - when you try to renew a book online, they do not let you and they alert you that someone else has placed a hold on the book, so I'm assuming there are some jerks out there just holding onto theirs. I may end up buying the book because the premise sounds incredible.
*edit lol jk I just checked my library account and a copy is in transit, which means I'll have it by Tuesday or Wednesday, yay :]
