message 1: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) So, I was just thinking about how long it would take to read all of Kings work (including the Bachman books) from start to finish in chronological order by publish date.

I think that would be hard for me, because I'm kind of a stickler for reading series books straight through, so The Talisman and Black House and The Dark Tower series might have to be the exception.

Has anyone ever tried this? How long do you think it would take you? Would you be interested in trying it?

Dj http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_... Here's a link to the wikipedia page listing the complete works of Stephen King in chronological order. There is a "+" mark for each one that contains a reference to The Dark Tower. I've been referring to this list for a while now while tackling my goal of reading all his works. I've got something like 35 under my belt now, and just a bit over halfway there it seems. Since it's in chronological order, you can really get an idea for his gradual change in writing style by recalling books that you've read that are clumped together in the timeline. Mind you, I'm not going about my to-read list in order. Becky, your idea would be ideal for people who have read all his works already, and would like to get a 2nd round in full. If only none of us had jobs... *sigh

Mark | 35 comments SOUNDS LIKE WORK, OR HOMEWORK. LET ME KNOW HOW THAT GOES!

message 4: by Mark (new)

Mark | 35 comments Sorry about the caps! Had the lock on for some reason. Anyway, like I said, let me know. I've read just about everything he's written and I started when I was 13 with The Shining; I'm 44 now. So I guess it takes about 31 years. GOOD READIN'!

Mark

message 5: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, of course you've read other books between, right Mark?

I'm thinking of starting with Carrie and reading straight through to Under The Dome non-stop. I don't think it would take me that long actually... Less than a year, definitely.

You are really going to do this? WHOA!

message 7: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, not today... I still have way too many unread books to read to go rereading 50+ just because they are King. But it would be interesting to try... :)

message 8: by Katarina (new)

Katarina (katarinaw) | 62 comments This is so cool! I wish I had the stamina too keep something like this up! But I'm so easily distracted.

I actually did attempt this a few years ago. I happened to be "between jobs" one summer and decided to do this. I got as far as Salem's Lot, but then I couldn't decide if I was going to re-read the ones I'd already read, or if was only going to read the ones I hadn't read before. And then some other book distracted me. And I got a job.

I hate it when getting a job distracts me from reading ;) hehe

It happens all too often...

message 11: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments I was just laid off, so will have the whole summer. I'm not re-reading all of King, but I AM reading the entire Dark Tower series, thanks, in part, to Becky:)

message 12: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Uhh... well... The not buying book thing went down in flames, Rob. Big ones. With fireworks. =\

But that's ok! Because reading is fundamental, right?!

message 13: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments RIF-I forgot that from school. I'm sooooo glad you burned your book ban Becky!

message 14: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments Yeah. I'm guessing my pile of unreads will dwindle and the library will get sick of my face. On the other upside it will be the last summer my oldest has only a permit, not a full license, so I can hold him captive. (at least a little!)

message 15: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh, I dunno... Last month sometime. I got one book, and then another, and then next thing I know, I'm ordering 4 books from B&N and then 6 books from PaperbackSwap, and then trading out books at the used book store.

Yeah. I'm weak. But I have new books, so I can live with that. :)

Just bought the new Sookie book. I just don't know how I can't buy books!

message 17: by Anna (new)

Anna | 64 comments I always buy books--when I'm near a good used book store I always stop in and never leave empty handed :) Now for my birthday I'm hoping for another big bookcase...

message 18: by Mysticalgoddess (new)

Mysticalgoddess wow you guys are very dedicated. I have only reada few books by King. This summer I may not have much time to read only one book by him. I am going to school for this summer. Then when I am done I can read some of his books, or more of his books. I have a lot of catching up to do!!

message 19: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) To be honest, I don't even remember. That's so bad. I'm really like a junkie, Rob!

There were some that I really wanted: A Thousand Splendid Suns, Maus I & II, but I can't say what the one book was that broke it. I think it was all of them. I just felt.. empty inside. (You buy that? You shouldn't, haha. I just wanted to buy new books.)

message 20: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I know! Mine are filled too, but that hasn't stopped me. It's shameful.

I definitely would try this! Especially since I still have A LOT of King's books to read, This would be ideal for me. I have no idea how long it would take me. Depends on work & classes, of course. But once I get into a book, I can buzz through it like nobody's business. So it would just depend. I think I'll try this...

message 23: by Dewayne (new)

Dewayne | 12 comments I've read 7 of Stephen King's books, I'm going to try and go in chronological order from now on. I hate it too when other things, like a job, get in the way of reading lol. Anybody see the old Twilight Zone episode of the man who loved to read and never had any time. His boss wouldn't let him read at the bank he worked at and his wife never let him read at home.

message 24: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'd have gotten a divorce. I'm dead serious.

message 25: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments The way that episode ends, if it's the episode I'm thinking of, makes me sad and kind of frustrated.

message 26: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments that's the one I meant.

message 27: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) He could teach himself braille... ;)

message 28: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments that involves finding braille books... :)

message 29: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) True. LOL Man, that guy's screwed!

message 30: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments That episode kills me! If I were him, I would have those books right up in my face. I am practically blind without my contacts, but I would MAKE it work!

It kills me when the wife writes all over the pages of his books. So sad...

message 31: by Angie, Constant Reader (new)

Angie | 2702 comments Mod
Writes all over the pages of a book! Yea divorce city!

message 32: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I dunno if that's divorce-worthy. I think that person would have a permanent accident. =\

message 33: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Haha... Funny you should mention that... Ha. Haha. ;)

message 34: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Just kidding.

message 35: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Uhhh... Nobody... (of consequence).

message 36: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Anymore.

message 37: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nobody really. But I've been tempted. My boyfriend just stole one of my shelves. He said I wasn't really "using" it because I could fit the books that were on it in another spot. But... they don't GO there.

*sigh* He didn't understand. Now my shelf has a bunch of graffiti and art books on it.

message 38: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) But he's useful too. For instance, he is able to get down tupperware containers for me. I would have to get a chair. He also takes out the trash.

I'll keep him around a while. For now.

message 39: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments Becky, he's good at tinting fans, too.

Rob, I bet you can sweep a mean floor;)

message 40: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments Awww...Rob. Maybe you're a good snuggler, too! That's worth all the money in the world!

Don't forget, I am now, officially, unemployed with you.

message 41: by Ella (new)

Ella (peacechild_123) I'm on this challenge, very amusing. (:

message 42: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL Kandice, I read that three times and was like "Where did she get 'smuggling' from??"

message 43: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) Rob wrote: "I know that's all I'M good for. Taking out the trash, walking the dog, dishes...pretty much anything that involves physical labor."

There's a reason we call it MANual labor! LOL ;p

I am unemployed too. Can't we think of some sort of internet business to start up (why didn't I think of goodreads)?

message 45: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments Becky wrote: "LOL Kandice, I read that three times and was like "Where did she get 'smuggling' from??" "

I read it three times and missed the "maybe". I was like, how does she know? :)

message 46: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hehehe!

message 47: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments Gosh you guys!!! Rob must be some awesome snuggler if I know from the internet!!! As far as sMuggling goes...wouldn't put it past the rascal.

message 48: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments I think we should talk up the Rob "awesome snuggler" legend.

message 49: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I heard that he snuggled 53 people at once during a snuggle drought. He was the only one with snuggles left, and so he made sure that he shared with as many people as he could. Alas, there was just not enough to go around, and some had to go without, try as he might to squeeze everyone in.

That still stands as the largest mass-snuggling in recent times.

message 50: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4388 comments Unfortunately, during his snuggle-thon, he taught all his snuggle recipients the fine art of snuggling, who in turn shared the knowledge, so it is no longer a marketable commodity. Alas...
