The childs parents died when young so they were a slave far away from anywhere.

In the book the person ends up turning into a wolf(?) and then returning to the destroyed city where their parents died.

I cant remember anything else though. I read it many years ago

I'm guessing this is a children's book - is it a picture book or a chapter book? And how long ago did you read it? Even a general range or decade will help. "Many years ago" means different things to different people. :)

I know this is abandoned, but if Ben ever comes back I'm pretty sure it's the Pellinor series by Alison Croggon. The first book is The Naming.
