Jay (grimey) They are Drooltastic!

CountZeroOr (count_zero) | 71 comments Shakespeare & Company reminds me a lot of the old location of a bookstore I used to go to in West Salem, OR - the Reader's Guide to Recycled Literature. They've had to move into an old warehouse, and unfortunately the new location just doesn't have the same ambiance as the labyrinthine corridors of the old place.

Cliff | 69 comments Taking a look at this list of bookstores, I'm inclined to think that the author made his selections based on the architecture/layout of the store rather than the size/selection of the books.

Powell's is on my to-do list if I ever find myself in Portland. But that's based on my assumption of the inventory, not necessary on the layout of the store.

Emma | 25 comments Shakespeare and Company in Paris is pretty cool, the owner never truly close the shop as long as people are in.
I remember fondly of an evening when the owner was engross in a discussion on the battle of Astings with 2 of my mates while i was confy in a chair reading my favorite passage of the treasure island.

Shakes and Co are great, both in Paris and Berkeley, but very different. Moes in Berkeley is also good. There's a tiny, absolutely weird-book-stuffed store in the French Quarter in NOLA that is simply awesome.

Also, Powell's.

Rich (justanothergringo) | 98 comments I've never been to the stores outside the US, but I've been to both Rizzoli's and Powell's (Portland, OR), and that's a pretty snobby list if they put Rizzoli's on it and not Powell's. Rizzoli's is in a beautiful setting and interesting to visit with polished wood and tall ceilings, but it's on the list because it's swank, posh and here in NYC. Powell's is an adventureland you can get lost in. It's a place for book lovers of all kinds, not just the swells.

Emma | 25 comments I've look at image of Powell's and it does look yummy. Maybe their list as said above is based on architecture and looks more than numbers....

T.R. Goodman (trgoodman) | 39 comments Seems wrong to judge a bookstore by its architecture, though. If the bookstore is good enough, you're so engrossed in all the books that you barely notice what's going on around you.

Rich (justanothergringo) | 98 comments it's not a bad place, but to me it just looks better than it actually is.

OMG... I never thought I would ever see the words 'Birmingham' and 'pretty' in the same sentence :)
