Some songs names would be appreciated please, Jean. Otherwise I might lose the whole morning trying out tracks. :)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) All Around My Hat, Thomas the Rhymer, Alison Gross, Gaudete, 700 Elves, Gamble Gold and Robin Hood, Sails of Silver, then there's the one where Bilbo and Gollum swap riddles - a lot are traditional folk songs like that, but with a twist.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Thanks Jean, will give them a listen.

Jamie (jamie73) @Bette & Jean
I can never listen to All Around My Hat' properly anymore after the 90's TV show The Fast Show used it in a sketch. The guy singing had a form of Tourette's and the word 'hat' was substituted for something else.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oh dear, Jamie! I'm glad I haven't seen that or I'd be the same! :D

I listened to "Heirloom" by Sufjan Stevens dozens of times on the way to work today. So very lovely. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ3qDZ6ffWU

I think in general Sufjan would be a whiz at those Flash Fiction contest where you tell a story in under 'x' number of words.

These lyrics from "Casimir Pulaski Day" - full of tiny intimate details wothy of Ishiguro. Not poetry but the germ of it. When the instruments are added in, it feels even more straightforward, honest, and heartbreakingly sincere.

CASIMIR PULASKI DAY

Goldenrod and 4-H stone,
the things I brought you
when I found out
you had cancer of the bone.
Your father cried on the telephone,
and he drove his car to the Navy yard
just to prove that he was sorry.
In the morning through the window shade
when the light pressed up
against your shoulder blade,
I could see what you were reading.
All the glory that the Lord has made
and the complications you could do without
when I kissed you on the mouth.

Tuesday night at Bible study,
we lift our hands and pray over your body,
but nothing ever happens.
I remember at Michael's house
in the living room when you kissed my neck,
and I almost touched your blouse.
In the morning at the top of the stairs
when your father found out
what we did that night
and you told me you were scared -
all the glory when you ran outside
with your shirt tucked in
and your shoes untied,
and you told me not to follow you.

Sunday night when I cleaned up house,
I found the card where you wrote it out
with the pictures of your mother.
On the floor at the Great Divide
with my shirt tucked in
and my shoes untied,
I am crying in the bathroom.
In the morning when you finally go
and the nurse comes in
with her head hung low
and the cardinal hits the window.
In the morning in the winter shade
on the first of March on the holiday,
I thought I saw you breathing.
All the glory that the Lord has made
and the complications when I see His face
in the morning in the window.
All the glory when He took our place
but He took my shoulders
and He shook my face
and He takes and He takes and He takes.

message 124: by Dwayne (new)

Dwayne Fry I listen to a wide variety of stuff. Lately, I've been getting into (again) U2 and R.E.M. but at times I listen to rockabilly, blues, jazz, classical, country, rap... pretty much anything. I used to have a thing about "new" music, anything after 1992, but that's melting away. I've been listening to a lot of Lumineers, Macklemore, Passenger and several other newer artists.

Jim Townsend | 238 comments Hi,

I tell people that music is my passion. German philosopher Friedrich Nietschke (sp?) is quoted as saying that life without music would be a mistake.

I love classic rock, jazz, classical, blues, a little country, and some old-time crooners (such as Frank Sinatra). My favorite bands and artists include the Eagles (who also wrote and recorded my favorite song, "Hotel California"); Genesis; the Beach Boys; the Beatles; the Allman Brothers; Chicago; Dixie Dregs; Journey; Fleetwood Mac; Pat Metheny; Miles Davis; Deodato; John Tropea; Kansas; Boston; Steve Winwood; Traffic; and Yes. My favorite classical composers include Vivaldi, Georg Philip Telemann; Mozart; Beethoven; Brahms; and J.S Bach and sons. Currently listening to "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by (David) Crosby, (Stephen) Stills, (Graham) Nash and (Neil) Young on iTunes' Woodstock Radio.

Jim

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments @Greg Wow, great song. Added to my iPod, thanks:)

@Jim I'm thinking we may be 'music-twins' in many ways. Although I'd add Bryan Ferry, Toto, Pink Floyd, Tony Bennett, Passenger, REM, Springsteen, U2, David Gray, Sarah Brightman, Adele, Pavarotti, Caruso, Maria Callas, Dusty Springfield, Damian Rice. My music goes all over the place from history probably up to 2000; I mostly stopped buying anything recorded post 2000 except for a random few.

Thanks Bette! :D I find Sufjan very endearing as a songwriter in addition to the musical artistry. Here's a couple others by him I find touching:

(Side note: I agree with you on Bryan Ferry - he's wonderful too!)

ROMULUS:

Once when my mother called,
she had a voice of last year's cough.
We passed around the phone
sharing a word about Oregon.
When my turn came, I was ashamed.
When my turn came, I was ashamed.

Once when we moved away,
she came to Romulus for a day.
Her Chevrolet broke down.
We prayed it'd never
be fixed or be found.
We touched her hair.
We touched her hair.

When she had her last child
once when she had some boyfriend somewhile,
she moved away quite far.
Our grandpa bought us a new VCR.
We watched it all night.
We grew up in spite of it.
We watched it all night.
We grew up in spite of it.

We saw her once last fall.
Our grandpa died in a hospital gown.
She didn't seem to care.
She smoked in her room and colored her hair.
I was ashamed. I was ashamed of her.
I was ashamed. I was ashamed of her.

THE PREDATORY WASP OF THE PALISADES IS OUT TO GET US

...
North of Savannah we swim in the Palisades.
I come out wearing my brother's red hat.
There on his shoulder, my best friend is bit
Seven times he runs,
washing his face in his hands.
Oh how I meant to tease him.
Oh how I meant no harm.
Touching his back with my hand, I kiss him.
I see the wasp on the length of my arm.

Oh great sights upon this state! Hallelujah
Wonders bright, & rivers, lake! Hallelujah
Trail of tears & Horseshoe Lake! Hallelujah
We were in love. We were in love.
Trusting things beyond mistake! Hallelujah
    Palisades, Palisades
I can wait. I can wait.

Lamb of God, we sound the horn.
Lord to us thy ghost is born.
Hallelujah!

I can't explain the state that I'm in,
the state of my heart. He was my best friend.
Into the car from the back seat,
oh admiration in falling asleep.
All of my powers day after day,
I can tell you we swaggered and swayed.
Deep in the tower, the prairies below,
I can tell you, but telling gets old.
Terrible sting and terrible storm,
I can tell you the day we were born.
My friend is gone. He ran away.
I can tell you, I love him each day.
Though we have sparred, wrestled and raged,
I can tell you; I love him each day.
We were in love. We were in love
Terrible sting and terrible storm,
    Palisades, palisades.
I can tell you ....
I can wait. I can wait.

Romulus is one of my favourite songs by Sufjan Stevens.

I tend to prefer music with good lyrics though I can appreciate good music too.

Been listening to a lot of Banks, The 1975 and Lykke Li lately - her album I Never Learn has been on repeat for ages.

Alice, I'm ashamed to admit I don't know most of those artists though I've heard of Yanni.

I find I'm addicted to stories in every genre including music; so usually, I listen to music with lyrics. But there are some notable exceptions!

message 150: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Paul Mauriat and Franck Pourcel were both great French composers famous for pop musical arrangements. Francis Goya is a Belgian classical guitarist and producer. Acker Bilk was an English musician whose famous clarinet piece is "Stranger on the Shore". Maurice Jarre was a French composer most well-known for his film scores like Doctor Zhivago (Lara's Theme), Lawrence of Arabia and Passage to India etc.

Here's a Yanni piece that I like, called "Spirit of Nature":-
