Haters

I personally enjoyed this book and most of the reviews here are positive. There are some that reviewed it as being a bad book and I respect everyone's right to their own opinion. I guess I was just stunned at the level of hate expressed. I found some of it presumptuous where readers claim to understand mental illness better than the author, despite the fact that the novel is loosely autobiographical. I look at this book as the author's take on her own experiences and not as something that she is the ultimate authority, just a fictionalization of some of what occurred in her life. Not everyone has to like every book, but those who posted about disliking this one seem to really, really hate it. I have two questions: is this level hatred really necessary? and how much, if any, of the negative response comes from just plain not understanding the book?

I would hazard a guess that most of the "haters" don't really understand the book. It is an unusual book and not for everyone. Also, keep in mind that this book has been around for a long time and current theories and treatments for schizophrenia have changed dramatically. I find it amazing that the brilliant psychiatrist in this book was able to make such a difference ... without medication. Not an easy or casual read but a very interesting one!
This book has been around for years. I have read it a number times. I agree Susan that people who have trouble with this book, most likely do not understand the disorder. Having worked in mental health for thirty years, I can tell you that this is one of the best novels on the subject.
