The mod's have come up with another challenge for September. This thread is a discussion thread to gather interest/feedback for the challenge.
Please note that it is not compulsory for everybody to participate in this challenge.
Here's the scale (as a team): 9.9% = 9 BAP 8.33 to 9.8% = 7 BAP 7 to 8.2 = 5 BAP
If we just aim for the % (without fitting the books into the challenge) 9.9% = 4 BAP 8.33 to 9.8% = 2 BAP 7 to 8.2 = 1 BAP
Rules: Your Team must have a minimum of one-third (1/3) of your books from the first challenge, A Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge. You may then choose the rest, in any percent each of the next two NBRC challenges you choose.
2. Based on the mods' %, here's the book breakdown for each member for reading at 9.9%. Remember, this number is just a guideline only. We need to read 127 books as a team (to reach 9.9% of our team goal) so if you can't meet your target, then that is fine.
Breakdown: Emily - 40 book goal = 3 books Katie - 40 book goal = 3 books Diane - 72 book goal = 7 books *Chris - 118 book goal = 11 books Catherine - 120 book goal = 11 books Melissa - 150 book goal = 14 books Rebecca - 150 book goal = 14 books Judy - 180 book goal = 17 books Vi - 213 book goal = 21 books Leslie - 285 book goal = 28 books Goal - 1368 Total # of books required - 129 * Possible Goal Increase
3. Moonstone is one of the most active teams so our team goal for September might actually be a challenge. But, we've read 97 books against LJB in two weeks and we've been consistently ahead of LJB by 30 books. (doesn't include BAP). So while 127 might be a challenge, it's certainly doable for us a team.
4. We (the captains) would like to know if you are participating in the September Challenge. For this challenge, the final number of books depends on how many members are participating and we can't use books from non-participating members. We hope you would join the challenge but we would understand if you can't.
6. For the third option (Any NBRC challenge), the captains strongly suggest looking at Animal Alphabet Challenge as it's a Spell-It-Out and flexible enough to fit books that don't fit in the first two.
7. We don't have to finish any of the 3 challenges - just fit books that works for the challenge. We also don't have to sign-up for any of the challenge. (You can if you want to).
8. All challenges will be attempted as a team. Just think of the three challenges are three categories like in August with many different subcategories.
Emily
Yeah I think that any of the Bingo ones look fun. I just know I'm really bad with the summer ones because I don't read hardly any light "summer reads" with pictures of beaches on the front. :D
Diane ~Firefly~
I think the only NBRC challenges I'm currently doing are the Decades Challenge and the 50 States Challenge, but I'm not likely to finish either.
Vi
Judy, I understand. SRC itself is a massive commitment. I've known to scramble in the last week. Can I say you would prefer not to participate in the September challenge?
Rebecca NJ
Judy - I didn't realize you were a fellow SRCer. I am also in awe of Vi on her finishing. I don't think I've even come close in the years that I've been participating, lol!
Vi
This season completes my first year :) You both are veterans compared to me.
To be fair, the both times I've completed, the total points was low - 1110 & 870? Even then, I was scrambling the last two weeks. And hubby learnt not to expect anything the last week. Have they told us the rules for creating tasks in Fall? I don't think there'll be many finishers this time.
Vi
Oh Judy, I know but compared to Winter which was 1200+? and this Summer 1350 (humungous), the total seems low. Of course, I don't know what the usual total was before last year. And this Summer we already have 4 finishers.
I love waiting for the new task - I usually lose interest in the current season once I see the new tasks and it's become an exercise in willpower not to start the planned books immediately..
Rebecca NJ
The minute the next season tasks are posted, I always seem to focus on my scavenger hunt, LOL!
I just had a look through my files and I've been doing the challenge on and off since Winter 2009. There was even a time where I was tracking and not reporting. And for those who are interested - 1100 points.
There are some modifications to the September challenge as the mods have come up with the % reading to complete the challenge.
Here's the scale (as a team): 9.9% = 4 BAP 8.33 to 9.8% = 2 BAP 7 to 8.2 = 1 BAP

Options 2 is a A-Z challenge. For example: Title A-Z challenge and you check off letters corresponding to the title you read. This will be a team challenge and done as a team.
Option 3 - Spell-it-out. For example: Animal Alphabet. If you would rather spell out an animal by yourself, then that is fine. Just let us know beforehand so that it's reserved to you as we can spell out the same animal only once. if you'd not, then we'll plug in books as needed. We're flexible.
Vi
I just realized something. Judy, A Book A Day is also attempted as a group. It's just like the August Challenge - i.e we have three categories with lot of different subcategory option.
~Leslie~
I am definitely in! Do we have to break it down between the three challenges as well? Do we have to complete all tasks in the Book a Day challenge or pick and choose which ones to complete as long as our percentages are good?
8. All challenges will be attempted as a team. Just think of the three challenges are three categories like in August with many different subcategories.
Do we have to break it down between the three challenges as well? Not necessarily. But we might move your books around if needed.
Do we have to complete all tasks in the Book a Day challenge or pick and choose which ones to complete as long as our percentages are good? No, we don't have to complete all the tasks in a Book A Day challenge. Just pick and choose. We just need to make 33% of our total books fit that challenge.
Diane ~Firefly~
So if the team needs to read 127 book and 1/3 (42) have to come from the first challenge which only has 31 options, does that mean we have to hit all 31 and then start again for the remaining 11?
I'm not sure if I'm in or not. 7 books is iffy and since I've been working hard this month to make sure my books fit specific challenges, I'm not sure I'm up to it again so soon as I'm a very mood driven reader.
Rebecca NJDiane ~Firefly~ wrote: "So if the team needs to read 127 book and 1/3 (42) have to come from the first challenge which only has 31 options..."
The first challenge has a lot of sub-options which we could double up on and don't necessarily need to do all 31. For example, #1 in that challenge is to read a book where the main character has a first experience OR is a one word title OR is the first of a series. This actually allows us to do this one category 6 times (2 times for each "OR" since we can double up).
We completely understand that you read as you go and it's up to you to participate in September. Just remember that we will be doing a spell it out which we could use the letters anywhere. Plus we'll have an A-Z challenge which is fairly open. If we see that a book you read can be fit into that first challenge, we can switch things around.
Vi
Diane, what Rebecca said. Additionally, I second your thoughts. I'm a mood-reader too and I don't like listing down books based on a challenge (it's the easiest way for me not to read those books). The reason we're advocating this challenge is because we think it's very doable even when you are not reading books specifically towards it.
And please don't think you have to read 7 books or if you have to preplan your books. That said, it's still up to you whether to join the September Challenge. We're trying to make it flexible/easy enough so that everybody joining can have fun. That is the most important part of the challenge.
Diane ~Firefly~
Well if y'all don't mind that I'm not going to plan anything specific to read, then I'm happy to let any books that fit count towards the challenge.
