If remade into another movie, heaven forbid, who do you think would play Rhett Butler?

In the book, Scarlet is described as not being traditionally pretty.
Not that I'm necessarily behind her in the role of Scarlet though, but she's probably better than many of the others.
Let's go for someone that is going to make this movie stand out from the old one -- and bring a fresh vision of the original story to the screen. For Rhett Butler I suggest Angelina Jolie.
George Clooney might be a good Rhett Butler. But never ever would be another cast as perfect as was the original. It is hard to try to equal or overpass perfection.
George clooney would be a great Rhett. Mila can't act, while she may have a better chance of being Scarlett than other actresses, she is a bad actress. She would need so much training. I think they would have to do like they did in the original casting and do a world wide search.
Ashley wrote: "Gerard Butler was my first thought as a good Rhett Butler but I don't know if that was because I really thought that or because they have the same last name and made the connect. Although Gerard do..."I think Gerard Butler is a good choice also!
Rhett is 35, if I recall. As for " foreigners" why not? I would like to point out that Vivien Leigh was British. When the actress who played as Scarlett's sister - a genuine Southerner - visited Australia on her book tour, she was asked her opinion, and said it was actually better to have a Brit in the role than an American who was from the North, because Southerners, like British, don't roll their r's. So she did a better job with the Southern accent than some Americans would have. But I do understand your feelings on this. It's how WE feel when some American plays the role of an Australian or Brit character. ;-)

You guys are trying to re-cast the most PERFECTLY CAST movie ever cast in the history of casting movies??!! Sheer craziness! And Clark Gable? That was a gorgeous, tough-on-the-outside/sweet-on-the-inside hunk of manliness. Dimples, cheesy mustache and everything. I can't imagine anyone else as Rhett.
Very true, Lori! :-) Let's face it, we all imagine Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh and they WERE perfectly cast, as were all the others. The description of Scarlett on the very first page just WAS Vivien Leigh, as the desrciption of Rhett WAS Clarke Gable(though I read somewhere that the author wanted Basil Rathbone, not sure where). I don't like Gone With The Wind the book because of the storyline, a very, very long Mills And Boon that romanticises the era of slavery, but it's a classic movie that just couldn't be remade, IMO. None of the actors around nowadays are right for it, sorry! (And our current PC feelings wouldn't allow the attitudes of that book)
My first thought before I looked at the other answers was Colin Farrell.. After reading the other suggestions which were very good --I still think Colin Farrell would be the best... Check him out on IMDBhttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0268199/?r...
I wondered about Gerard Butler, as well, but I think Christian Bale might be a better choice ... although I'm not sure why I think that! Perhaps it would be easier to figure out who should be cast as Rhett if I think about who should be cast as Ashley Wilkes. Thoughts?
I previously mentioned Leonardo DiCaprio for Ashley. And Christian Bale might just be good as Rhett. I still say George Clooney - I know he's too old for Rhett but he really does remind me of him...or at least of Clark Gable.
Actually the movie was considered not perfectly cast, Leslie Howard as Ashley was considered a misfire. Leo DiCaprio is way too strong for Ashley, who in the book was a milquetoast. Leslie Howard himself was ashamed of his performance.
I still would love to see this remade. I love seeing remakes! But, well, it would probably suck lol. Even so, I'd still love to see someone take the chance and try it out.Alas, it would never get remade accurately, or I should say, according to the book. With our politically correct society, I don't think they would dare dream a remake of this. Too many ruffled feathers.
I don't know if it could be remade, as by today's standards it would be too expensive. GWTW is one of the best movies ever made, and there is just no need. I wouldn't want them to make a half-assed version.
I like Justin Theroux, robert downey jr or henry cavil for Rhett. Rhett was a teenager when Scarlett's mother was born, so he is at least 20+ years older than scarlett. Many of the actresses mentioned seemed to old for Scarlett. She is really young for the majority of the book and I couldn't see her being played by someone over say 24. It should be a spunky sassy teen or early 20's with blue or green stern eyes. Brown eyes will not do for Scarlett.
ok, I have decided that Emilia Clark would be the perfect Scarlett. she is on HBO Game of Thrones as a blonde, but she is naturally a very beautiful brunette. she could easily pull off the age difference. I still think Justin Theroux is perfect for Rhett. It would be nice to see more important roles for minorities though since we are in a new millennium now!

Alexandra Daddario as Scarlet."
haha.... Rhett Buttler is 50 years old man and Matt Bomer is not... Are you serious about Ashley???
And Scarlet? Have you notice how ugly is mrs Daddario?
Definitely Hugh Jackman for Rett And because Scarlett is way too younger than the women you suggest - my suggestion is Taylor Swift or Scarlett Johanson whit black hair
How about Ed westwick as Rhett Butler and Leighton Meester as Scarlett !? They look great together !! Now that I have seen Gossip Girl , I am becoming a fan of these two .

LOLOL
Hugh Jackman would be a terrific Rhett. Scarlett would be the tougher casting decision. Someone that is pretty but not in a glamour magazine way, has a partially rotten heart but is not too stupid to learn a moral in the end. She starts out at the age of 16 in the book, so probably the actress should be under 25 or at least look it. I'm going with Emilia Clark but if she's too old then Sophie Turner. Sophie would look terrific with her hair died a brownish black color.
I agree that Clark Gable was the perfect Rhett Butler but Hugh Jackman is at least as handsome as Clark Gable so I would try him out in the role. And I agree that Angeline Jolie would make a great madam (Belle) :) But no matter who we pick for the characters, Gone with the Wind could never truly be remade to any great success. It needed the time period and actors. It Would not work in this day and age. They would have to make it bloodier, add several "F" words and more sex. They would destroy the movie. (just my opinion)
Isn't Henry Cavill too young? Yeah, Hugh Jackman could work. But I can't really picture anyone other than Clark Gable in the role.
I agree, just as I cannot see another actor playing some of the roles Gary Cooper, James Stewart, or Burt Lancaster (eg) made famous.IF they were to do the movie again, it would probably be either an action film (Civil War) or a spoof = ''It ain't fittin'... it ain't fittin'. It jes' ain't fittin'... It ain't fittin'.''
Just finished with this book for like the 10th time and every time I finish it I want a remake. I just feel the original didn't do the book enough justice (don't all lynch me at once)
Love the idea of Mila Kunis for Scarlett, Anne Hathaway as Melanie, George Clooney for Rhett and Ryan Gosling for Ashley...

Love the i..."
HAHA, I feel the same way! I LOVE the movie but when you read the book and then watch the movie it's quite lacking. I think a mini series is really what's needed for this. Or a 3 or 4 part movie.
But alas, I don't see it being remade. We live in a world too many people would be offended. It doesn't fit the new politically correct agenda.
That's the only reason I can't see it being remade either... Although there was rumour in 2012 that it would be remade with Reese Witherspoon and David Hasselhoff (of all people) had hinted at the time he was being considered for Rhett... I actually know a real life version of Rhett minus the moustache... Don't think he's inclined to acting though lol
I'd go for:Pedro Pascal for Rhett
Natalie Dormer for Scarlett
Tom Hiddleston for Ashley
Carey Mulligan for Melanie
... and I'd love to see Esme Bianco as Belle. She's gorgeous.
(it just dawns on me that 3 of these people are on Game of Thrones. Oh well.)
