Gone with the Wind

If remade into another movie, heaven forbid, who do you think would play Rhett Butler?
I could see a younger George Clooney pulling off Rhett Butler but George Clooney today... No. Rachel McAdams is an excellent actress but I just can't see her as Scarlett. Rachel has a bit of roughness to her IMO. I just can't see the southern bell in her. Now Amanda Seyfried would be a good Melanie IMO. Scarlett Johansson as some suggested above could work too as Scarlett O'Hara. I thought of her also. A few other actors I thought of to play Rhett Butler is Russell Crowe, Jude Law and Christian Bale. As for Ashley Wilkes possibly Ethan Hawke, Ryan Reynolds, or Chris Pine.
Rachel Mcadams roughness is one of the reasons I could actually see her as Scarlet. When we pick actors though we have to remember Rhett is tall. George Clooney is sort of short if I remember correctly? The actor also needs to do that lip curl. Can't live without that LOL.
The character Rhett Butler should be played by someone who is dark featured and can come across as a bit of a cad as well as the redeemable hero and good-guy. I agree with the choice of Gerard Butler... I'm sure he can also 'pull off' the southern accent. Otherwise Clark Gable is quite the hard act to follow!

What about Nina Dobrev as Scarlett? I can't think of someone who can be a Clarke Gable substitute.
Jo Ellen wrote: "George Clooney. or...the actor who plays the lead in "Hell on Wheels". Can't think of his name."The actor that plays the lead in "Hell on Wheels" is named Anson Mount. I agree he would be a good Clarke Gable substitute for the role of Rhett. The more I think about it though the more I believe that no one can replace Clarke Gable.
Jo Ellen wrote: "George Clooney. or...the actor who plays the lead in "Hell on Wheels". Can't think of his name."I agree!
that guy from hell on wheels is awesome... rhett is irreplaceable. he can only be gable. johnny depp aint manly enough
Keira as Scarlett?? Just NO!!! Please!! I don't like how she acts, she makes her characters so annoying and all are the same. Just no. I think she's beautiful and I like her as a person, but not as an actress. I'd like to see Nina Dobrev as Scarlett. I enjoy very much her portrayal as Katherine Pierce and in some aspects she reminds me of Scarlett.
As Rhett Butler I see Hugh Jackman,Johnny Depp.
I sort of pictured young Catherine Zeta-Jones (circa the first Zorro movie) as Scarlett. Johnny Depp would work as Rhett but can't really see anyone else as him.
If we're naming characters that aren't changed from the description in the novel, then we have to remember Scarlet is not beautiful. Nina is too gorgeous to play her.

I agree. But Vivien Leigh was too.

We cannot necessarily say Scarlett isn't beautiful just because the description in the book says she wasn't. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Any sexy girl could play Scarlett.
It depends on "what does beauty mean?"
Yet, if Scarlett was ugly or just not that pretty, the fact of being average would make the movie that much more awesome. As if saying she had other charms that accounted for how she was able to do the things she did.

The Hollywood production of GWTW says Scarlett was beautiful. Remaking the movie would probably mean loosing even that much of the hollywood glamor--making scarlett less pretty and rhett more rugged
Gable was all man but he was still more mouth than fists. Get a guy to play it who looks like he'll punch people out, and does the talk and has the look.
The only one I can think of who fits that is Huge Jackman.Tara wrote: "Gable was all man but he was still more mouth than fists. Get a guy to play it who looks like he'll punch people out, and does the talk and has the look."

Hugh Jackman is a very talented actor. I didnt think so at first but I had to think about it. He could do it.

clark gable and vivien leigh were the best. today's actors and actresses are talentless nobodys i hate every single celebrity of today. no brad pitt, no jennifer aniston, no hugh jackman, in fact acting is a stupid job as it is. you make your life shameful, expose everything to everyone just to get money? i hate the fakeness of it all.

But my first thought was George Clooney."
Clooney? Not to be hypocritical. I just think he's not that good of an actor to play a character that is so popular. thats like playing a character for a person who actually lived. i think the shoes are too big for clooney to fill. he'd have to BECOME rhett butler and i'm not sure he has it.

spoken like a tru fan of the golden age.
thats how i feel most of the time. thats what Spencer Tracy said. "Why do actors think they're so important? It makes me so mad!"
And Marlon Brando "Acting doesn't take much. It's a bums job."

Ian Somerhaler. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0813812/?r...
Although I sincerely hope that they don't even think about remaking Gone with the Wind...!!! :P
Gerard butler is too "average Joe" looking.
it's kinda like Michelle Williams pulling off the role of Marilyn. spool unlikely. but did about one of the best jobs that could be done. that's what I think of someone imitating Clark
OK this really happened about a decade or two ago. And I thought it had to be Pierce Brosnan. They cast Timothy Dalton. It was horrid.
Avelina wrote: "I was also thinking of Johnny Depp as Rhett. I think Jennifer and Angelina are too old to play Scarlett."Agreed. Johnny Depp. Totally. :)
Oleander wrote: "My choice would be Karl Urban He played Bones in the latest Star Trek movies. He's got the southern accent and right look"
Yes, I think he could work also.
I didn't see anyone suggesting Tom Hardy. He was great as Heathcliff in Wuthering heights and is masculine enough for Rhett.
Marcia wrote: "DiCaprio...he personifies class..."
DiCaprio is hard working and he's an excellent actor, but he's not "old school" enough, in my opinion. he's not a "steak and potatoes" type. i don't know how well he can do "rugged"

oohh Karl Urban for sure. He has that powerful sexuality that Rhett had. A little dark a little domineering, perfect.
Olivia wrote: "I saw a discussion as to who would play Scarlett O'Hara if the movie were to be remade- so how about a similar discussion- who do you think would play Rhett Butler?"Michael Fassbender would be amazing in that role. Hugh Jackman would be a good choice, as well. Gerard Butler would be an interesting choice mostly because he might have a hard time with the accent.
I thought Kirstie Alley in her younger days would have been the perfect Scarlett. I saw her in North and South and she was phenomenal. I always see her as being a spicy vixen anyway.
Who in the world could ever be Clark Gable? There are no stars today. Perhaps it could be said there are good actors, but with the presence of Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, so many. I agree though about George Clooney. And it would not have to be some younger version. I don't think that George Clooney looks any older than Rhett did (with the gray hair removed of courser) and he is the only most likely to be able to play this part. We have all seen him in movies where he was stern, compassionate, ruthless and all other sorts of traits thrown in. And let's face it, he can be very charming!!!
And like Rhett, I bet the audience would all gasp when Scarlett continued to pursue milktoast Ashley when she could have George Clooney!!! (Sorry, just could not help myself throwing that in!!!)
As far as Scarlett, a question not really asked...... Who could ever be Vivian Leigh? She was able to act so well, but at least part of her abilities came from her very damaged mental condition. She was etheral (sp?). Her beauty beyond anything we see today. (And hers without plastic surgery, botox and liposuction.)
Selznick went through every star in Hollywood and those he just found on the street, thousands of pictures and still would not have landed on her except for an accident of fate. So maybe there is an unknown out there who could do it well. There are actresses today that could play one facet of her character, but to play all of them.... Just my opinion, but no one.
