1. After watching Tombstone, I started a Doc Holliday Appreciation Society - it only ever had 2 members (including me). (Actually, thinking about it my Doc Holliday and Old West books should probably go on my odd shelf too)
2. I hate tennis so much that I can't be in the same room as a television showing a match (its the sound of the racket hitting the balls and the crowd noises - it's like someone scratching their fingers down a black board to me).
3. I have a theory that Daddy Long Legses generally come out on the Last Night of the Proms (presumably they enjoy patriotic music!) Unfortunately this hasn't held true this year as I was terrified by one a few weeks ago)

1. I recently, well four months ago, got a miniature schnauzer puppy after having Rottweilers (health problems meant I couldn't manage another large dog). Without exception everyone I meet for the first time says, "that's a bit of a change!!"2. I drive a nine year old beat up and bashed in car which folks look at with something approaching horror and ask why I don't change it. Cars don't interest me - if it reliably gets me from A to B, why would I change it?
3. I love sausages. All sorts of sausages but particularly a local variety called Cragside Crackers, seriously yummy.
Those really are very random things, Hilary! I have a picture of you in my head now, driving in your ancient car, full of tiny dogs on your way to acquire more sausages from the local butchers :0)
1. I recently downsized from a large home to a two-bedroom apartment where I live with my college student daughter (Creative Writing major) and a Gordon Setter - I love having a smaller space and less stuff!2. Spending time with a Maasai tribe in Kenya changed my outlook on life.
3. I volunteer as a parenting mentor for underprivileged young moms who are struggling to make a good life for their children.
Hi Bridget, downsizing house is hard enough but apartment living with a Gordon Setter sounds a bit of a challenge. Keep up the work with the young mums, if the US is anything like the UK some of them really need the support.
Wow, I'm really impressed Bridget - what were you doing whilst staying with the Maasai Tribe?
I'm intrigued by the time you spent with the Maasai Tribe, Bridget, it sounds fascinating! The parenting mentor role must be so rewarding, how long have you been doing that?
Thanks! I took my daughter on safari for her 21st birthday adventure. Spending time with the Maasai opened our eyes to just how over-the-top our culture of consumerism really is. We were able to spend time in their homes and make real connections. A soul-changing experience.
I've just recently started as a parenting mentor for a local charity, and feel it is an exciting opportunity to make a direct positive impact for someone who is overwhelmed. I was so blessed to have an involved husband and sufficient resources, even though he was deployed most of our marriage. So I can't imagine having no support system to help during that challenging phase of life. If there's a way to ease that burden for a young mom then I think it's important to try.
Thats really admirable Bridget - and of course by helping the mothers you're helping the whole family not to mention future generations.
Wow - would love to go on Safari! It's my dream holiday but the cost is just so high!
Hope you enjoy your work with the young mum's Bridget - it must be really scary having to bring up a child without a whole lot of support so I'm sure they really appreciate everything you do to help them!

1- I went on 3 cruises in 6 months2- I was most popular in school for my versions of les Dawson playing the piano
3- I once burned a trifle
first trifle i ever made- from a box. i made the custard and burned the powder to the bottom of the pan when boiling the milk, but stirred it in thinking it would be ok. however, when poured onto the jelly and with the topping added, it had big black bits in it and tasted suspiciously of charcoal!
I never did do this ha ha - will try to think of something that I haven;t already told all you guys ;)
I went to the Caribbean on the 1st cruise, flying back from Barbados, after visiting antigua, st kitts, Dominica, st Maarten and the Azores. 2nd cruise did the med, lisbon, Gibraltar, Malta, Ephesus and Athens. The 3rd I flew to New York, then to New Orleans, then to Barbados and took a cruise home. Lots of fun.
